Opinion: Slaughtering horses, poisoning people; is the U.S. asleep at the wheel?

by R.T. Fitch

It’s out in the open and there’s no denying or running away from it now. The anti-horse people have been attempting to keep it under wraps for ages. Today, however, it’s staring them right in the face and there’s a great big draft horse standing in their living rooms. The EU now recognizes that the meat from American horses, slaughtered in Canada and Mexico, is toxic and dangerous for human consumption due to the equine medications it retains.

For years, Pro-Horse advocates have been telling us that besides being immoral and socially repugnant, the business of horse slaughter was flooding the European and Asian specialty meat markets with tainted and toxic meat – meat that is dangerous for humans to consume. Equine medications are clearly marked that they are not for use on food animals. Horses have not, nor ever have been, considered food animals by American society and government agencies such as the USDA. So, what’s the deal?

If all of us had our eyes wide open, then why did we allow foreign owned slaughter plants to operate within our borders for years without any federal intervention? The majority of the U.S. public was crying out to stop this barbaric practice; yet, our government in D.C. appeared not to be listening. What does that say of our elected, federal representatives who continually dragged their feet and tied up pro-horse legislation in committees, year after year? The slaughter plants were closed in 2007 but, last year, we allowed 133,000 healthy American horses to be inhumanely shipped across our public highways and over our borders to be brutally slaughtered in Canada and Mexico. Bills H.R. 503 and S. 727 (The Equine Cruelty Prevention Act of 2009), which were designed to stop this practice, are going absolutely nowhere. “Hey boys and girls, we aren’t just talking about killing horses, here; now, we are talking about poisoning and possibly injuring human beings!”

It looks like there might be more than just the blood of horses on the hands of our government leaders. One thing is for certain, within the world community, there certainly is egg on their faces.

However, all of the blame does not sit solely in the lap of our federal government. What about the state governments that have, as of late, been trying to jump upon the “horse killing/people poisoning” bandwagon? It looks as if they are hoping and praying that all of that blood letting might net them an extra buck or two. Take Ed Butcher from Montana, for example. Butcher (no intentional play on words) ramroded a partisan bill through his state’s government that not only opens the door to allow foreigners to come into the state to open horse slaughtering facilities, but also impedes the rights of the public to protest the construction of such plants. Where is the moral compass in all of that mess? It sure doesn’t reside in the offices of Montana’s state government! It now appears that they publicly approve and endorse, not only the butchering of a passive companion animal but, the poisoning of people in foreign lands.

We, the American public, do have the ability to turn this wagon train of destruction around and, perhaps, save some face in the opinion of the global community. We can pick up the phone, write an email, or fax our elected representatives and tell them that we want them to co-sponsor and support H.R. 503/S.727 because enough is enough. The senseless butchering of our American icon has always been nagging at our soul; but, now the prospect of poisoning people is just going too far over the top. It is time to put an end to this dirty, bloody secret and cleanse our spirits by standing up for what is right, morale, and just. Talk to your representative and ensure that they understand your passion and your commitment to take back into control the political machine that has been heading down the mountain without any brakes. Give them direction; pledge your support; and, if you are snubbed or ignored, vote them out. It’s your right! That is the only way we are going to clean this mess up. If they won’t listen, and they continue to ignore the voice of the people who elected them, then oust them at the very first opportunity.

Let’s clean house! It is way past time to stop the killing; and, it’s the perfect time to head off any further potential poisoning of human beings. Pick up the phone and make that call. We, as Americans, have the ability, the power, and the right to get this wagon train back on the trail. Let’s combine forces and make it happen!

May the Force of the Horse© be with you.

  2. This is the best news and one happy day, thank you for sharing this! Not only is the “dirty little secret out,” but another “dirty little secret” appears to be known now: I think USDA’s known this all along and deliberately deceived the Europeans, literally poisoning them for the sake of a buck.

  3. It is really sad that it took the possibility of humans being hurt for anyone to truely pay attention to this issue. It’s amazing the things going on out there that we are not aware of. Thank you for posting this article. Hopefully one day there will be laws in place against this and no more animal cruelty!

    • B Haney, whatever your real name is;

Once in a blue moon someone, such as yourself, rears their ugly head and spits out a bit of nonsense that is neither grammatically correct nor backed with correct facts and/or information.

I feel sorry for all of the hate and bitterness that is pent up in your soul as you must be very lonely because of it.

Instead of looking at horses as food and a quick way to make a buck, look into one’s eye and allow your anger and ugliness to seep away. Look at your reflection in that eye and redeem yourself. There is hope and only you can set yourself free.

      Boa sorte.

  5. Can we post this news in Canada and France? If they become concerned that their horsemeat is poisoned, maybe they will stop buying it, thereby accomplishing by economic deficit what we have not been able to achieve! ( no horsemeat sales)

  6. R.T., Very intersting –

Now this is not a political push for medical care one way or another, but – I think related to this horse meat issue –
I think it was on Link TV, Democracy Now (who I have been e-mailing every week to do a program about BLM and the horses), or maybe a documentary on Link TV, maybe somewhere else –

Europe, or at least parts of Europe, has blockaided several US products from their markets, from shampoos, to laundry detergents, to food additivies, even additivies to prescripton medicines. The story goes that Europe, providing medical care, has determined that these products and additives actually make people sick, so since they pay medical, they have banned them to keep people healthier – at least not poisoned.

The report went on – that the Chemical Companies sent massive lobby money and lobbiests to Europe to no avial – in fact many jumped ship because there was no way to fight the logic.

I don’t like to post things I can’t refer to, so I’ll start doing research and come back with it – but I felt it was timely to this discussion. Does anyone else remember this documentary or news show?

  7. Regrding my comment #7, have not found original article or documentary yet. Food Inc. is a good documentary, as I recall touches on this issue.

And I’ve had an epiphany which will require repeating another post from another page.

There is much blame and hate of “BLM”, much hate and blame of “government”. I come from a ranching family, but my parents took a different route of entrepreneur business people, so that is what I grew up in about age 6 and went into in my adult life. Found myself at age 40, accidentally as it sometimes works out, working in a technical capacity for an employee owned fire department that worked under contract to various municipalities. My particular line of work placed me right smack dab in the middle of “the government”. When that company began to have some issues that were not acceptable to me, at age 48, I stayed in my line of work, but went to work for “the government” side. What I experienced for the next 14 years in that capacity was a lot of really good people, mostly “stage II”, but also a lot of “stand up” people (mostly “stage III” by nature), that took on their bosses, the burocracy, the Mayors, and City Councils for what was right, or seemed so. 90% of the people I worked for exeneded themselves to solve their customers problems. Now I am not naive – I was offered bribs, only a couple of times (which I responded “This as a joke just one time”), but it begs one to accept that corruption does exist, someone was saying yes of course.

This brings me to my epiphany:

Maybe we are spining our wheels on “hate” and “blame” and not enough time on “solutions” and “action” – working “with” “BLM” and “government”. What is that saying about “walking with a man” instead of “walking against a man” will get you both further down the road – something like that.

Now I don’t have any idea how to get out of “hate” and “blame” myself. But I am torn, having been one of those “government workers for a time”. Maybe we have to stop “dividing”, stop pushing against. I dont’ know how, I feel so much hate right now.

Anyway – what if we tried, just pretended we were in Stage 4 – what would that look like, what would our actions be? The later part is response to the Cattors, BLM, DOI as I see it.

In my opinion BLM is in Stage 1. According to Peck “The majority of good, law-abiding citizens never move out of Stage II.” – which is why we are where we are today, in so many ways.

From M. Scott Peck, from excerpts in Wikepedia:

    • Stage I is chaotic, disordered, and reckless. Very young children are in Stage I. They tend to defy and disobey, and are unwilling to accept a will greater than their own. They are extremely egoistic and lack empathy for others. Many criminals are people who have never grown out of Stage I.
    • Stage II is the stage at which a person has blind faith in authority figures and sees the world as divided simply into good and evil, right and wrong, us and them. Once children learn to obey their parents and other authority figures, often out of fear or shame, they reach Stage II. … The majority of good, law-abiding citizens never move out of Stage II.
    • Stage III is the stage of scientific skepticism and questioning. A Stage III person does not accept things on faith but only accepts them if convinced logically. Many people working in scientific and technological research are in Stage III. …
    • Stage IV is the stage where an individual starts enjoying the mystery and beauty of nature and existence. While retaining skepticism, he starts perceiving grand patterns in nature and develops a deeper understanding of good and evil, forgiveness and mercy, compassion and love. His religiousness and spirituality differ significantly from that of a Stage II person, in the sense that he does not accept things through blind faith or out of fear, but does so because of genuine belief, and he does not judge people harshly or seek to inflict punishment on them for their transgressions. This is the stage of loving others as yourself, losing your attachment to your ego, and forgiving your enemies. Stage IV people are labeled as Mystics.

Ok, I must admit, by my sheer desire to share this, I am wobbling around in stage I. I seem to have skipped stage II alltogether – hum? But have lived my work life in Stage III, can only aspire to stage IV.

    EVIL

    What do you think?:

According to Peck an evil person[3][2]:
    • Is consistently self deceiving, with the intent of avoiding guilt and maintaining a self image of perfection
    • Deceives others as a consequence of their own self deception
    • Projects his or her evils and sins onto very specific targets (scapegoats) while being apparently normal with everyone else (“their insensitivity toward him was selective” (Peck, 1983/1988[3], p105))
    • Commonly hates with the pretense of love, for the purposes of self deception as much as deception of others
    • Abuses political (emotional) power (“the imposition of one’s will upon others by overt or covert coercion” (Peck, 1978/1992[2], p298))
    • Maintains a high level of respectability and lies incessantly in order to do so
    • Is consistent in his or her sins. Evil persons are characterized not so much by the magnitude of their sins, but by their consistency (of destructiveness)
    • Is unable to think from the viewpoint of their victim (scapegoat)
    • Has a covert intolerance to criticism and other forms of narcissistic injury

Sounds an awful like Cattor and BLM to me.

  8. I am amazed by your doing. You are so right.
I am german, but immigrated to Canada 14 years ago.
I live 25 km down the road from the horse slaughter plant in Fort Macleod, Bouvry. After the states banned the slaughter of horses for the human consumption, we received all the horses to be slaughtered here. I believe our plants killed over 112.000 in 2008. Bouvry prides theirselves with killing one horse every 90 seconds and the latest footage of the bouvry plant here in Fort macleod was horrific, but charges were dropped.
It is good that somebody realized that the meat from any horse is poisonous to humans, possibly to dogs.
I am about to built a website for my german friends to get the truth out and hopefully across europe. Had to copy and will translate this article, hope that will be ok.

    lets do it!
