Thanks to The Cloud Foundation for this release
Wild horse and burro champions, Congressman Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) and Congressman Nick Rahall (D-WV), are currently circulating a letter that will be sent to Secretary Salazar with a cc to BLM Director, Bob Abbey.
Please take time today to ask your Congress person to sign on to this letter and show their support for protecting wild horses and burros on our public lands. Take this opportunity to contact your Congress person- the public’s voices must be heard and Secretary Salazar needs to place an immediate moratorium on roundups and removals of our wild horses! However, please do not contact Congressman Grijalva or Rahall or the House Natural Resources Committee (except to send letters or emails of support).
Find your Congress person’s contact information at votesmart.org. Currently this letter is only being circulated in the House but ask your Senators to start a letter on the Senate side as well.
The following email is being circulated:
Dear Colleague,
We invite you to join us in sending the attached letter to Secretary of the Interior Salazar on the recent tragic deaths of wild horses that occurred during Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Tuscarora Complex roundup in Nevada early this month. The roundup occurred in extreme temperatures, using deeply flawed methods, and was conducted without allowing any public observation. This comes just months after another round up in the Calico Mountains in Nevada resulted in the deaths of over 100 wild horses.
Given this troubling pattern, the letter asks the Secretary to halt the Tuscarora round up, along with any pending gathers, until the BLM can demonstrates that it has addressed the failings of the Wild Horse and Burro Program and can ensure the health and safety of these federally protected animals. It further asks the Secretary to take temperature extremes and the age and general health of the horses into consideration when scheduling roundups, as well as allow for public observation. Additionally, we ask the Secretary to request an independent study from the National Academy of Sciences on the Wild Horse and Burro program – to determine scientifically sound, non-lethal, and effective management practices.
To sign on to the letter please contact Laurel Angell in Chairman Rahall’s office or Marcos Huerta with Chairman Grijalva.
| Nick J. Rahall, II Chairman Committee on Natural Resources |
Raúl M. Grijalva Chairman Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands |

I am not clear on the specific action for me to take in regard to this matter. I like Madeleine Pickens and IDA because they make it very easy to comment etc.
Great news. Good Job Rahall and Grijalva!

I too was a little confused as to what action to take when I first read this on the The Cloud Foundation web site. RT Fitch made it more clear. Thank you.
From what RT wrote, I presume:
Rep. Rahall & Rep. Grijalva will be sending the above “Dear Colleague” letter to all in the House of Representatives asking them to sign the accompanying, attached pdf letter written by Rahall & Grijalva to Salazar (cc Bob Abbey).
This way, hopefully, a great number of Reps. will be sending/forwarding to Salazar the same Rahall/Grijalva letter….in volumes!
Pray Salazar/Abbey NOW get flooded from THEIR legislative “Colleagues!” We for sure have “flooded” them with emails, calls, petitions, rallies… Maybe, just maybe, Salazar will respond?!
If this is the way it is to work, Rahall & Grijalva were ingenious. Bravo!
What are we to do?
Call our State Representatives (contact links above) and ask them to sign the Rahall/Grijalva letter to Salazar they have received, or will get, from Rahall/Grijalva. And ask your Rep. to forward same letter, with their signature, to Secretary of the Interior, Salazar…Czar of BLM~
And can give your input too,to Reps: i.e., no response from Salazar/BLM to the public, call for a MORATORIUM (!!)…and more. But best keep it short, direct? *The letter is of most importance to convey.
And also call your Senators and ask that they start a similar letter, as the Rahall/Grijalva lettter is ONLY circulating to the House of Reps.
This is working together! Imagine that?! The public and our legislators. For the WILD HORSES!
I think I got the above right…but I am open to correction 🙂

Well I downloaded the letter, put in “my favorites” (AOL) then went to my congressman’s site to email. They don’t make it easy. I filled out the form and then tried to get the letter into the comment part of the Form. Usually you drag a little heart from “favorites” and it makes a link. Nope whole site disappeared. I’ll wait until my Webmaster daughter returns tonight. They should make it easier for us to e mail them instead of having tilfill out forms.

OK, sorry I got confused. I sent the letter just as Ronnie said. I just did not realize that the two senator, Grihalva and Rahall were sending them to all the Congressmen.
Thanks I did e-mail.

I would be so appreciative of the intelligent caring people that stop the massive murder of our American Mustangs… many of us are willing to help and have great ideas to help the horses… please stop killing them before it is too late.

I respect everything The Cloud Foundation does, but I don’t always agree. That doesn’t mean I don’t support them and there may be a very good reason to circulate, sign, contact reps (mine won’t support it, but I’ll try anyway) and send to Salazar that I am not privy to…but I wouldn’t waste one minute on Salazar any further. Send it to the leaders of the House, Senate, Natural Resource/Commerce (what ever those Congressional Committees are that deal with wild equines) and the White House….but not one more minute of my time on Salazar, USDA.
THEY DON’T LISTEN, CARE AND CONTINUE TO MURDER OUR EQUINES!
If this letter is succesfully signed, I’d send Slaughterczar a notarized, certified mail copy; That’s it!
BTW…where’s Senators Ensign, Byrd’s replacement and Landrieu in all this?

Good question, Denise, thank god for these 2 men, at least they are trying to do something to bring to light the horror that is BLM, and what is the President doing about this??? He’s on “The View”; makes me crazy!

Misters. Rahall and Grijalva are each a chairman of critical to DOI operations committees in the House. Is there any special reason they don’t drag Mr. Salazar, Abbey et al in front of their respective committees and demand answers to the specific questions and issues discussed repeatedly here and on other websites?
After all, these committees approve DOIs budgets before going to the floor.
