MOFFAT COUNTY, Colo. – A Colorado man is now under federal investigation after he sold hundreds of horses, and advocates fear the animals may have been slaughtered for food. The government is now making sweeping changes as a result.
FOX 31 Denver’s Jeremy Hubbard traveled to Sand Wash Basin, near Craig, Colo. to delve deeper into the controversy, and to speak with wild horse advocates Nancy Roberts and Carol Walker.

I wish the BLM propaganda of having to remove the wild horses to keep populations down was not reported. I’m so glad Nancy got to say leave them alone though. All removals need to stop now.

Jeremy, not sure why any advocate not think these horses did go to slaughter……. “Sale Authority” horses are out of the BLM’s authority after the sale, and even is this twit is a friend of the Salazars family it doesn’t matter. NOTHING WILL CHANGE, until the Burns Amendment is repealed as it was proposed in 2011 and never hit the house floor for hearing.
In fact after the farce with the Del Rio grand jury case never seeing the light of day, the problems and issue I believe continue, Ole Davis crossed someone that turned into a whistle blower and we saw his misgivings!! Even after the “Burns Amendment” put into the Appropriations Bill in 2005 at 11:59 to by pass any hearings as everyone was on leave for Thanksgiving recess did the wheels begin to roll and can only presume thousands of horses have been slaughtered, maybe even some with no numbers for ID”s.
No public can see long term holding pens to see the filth, crowding, injury that does happen. Almost like a prison yard with wranglers that could care less or their welfare, or can we even count the horses for verification to paperwork if it exist.
Its an injustice that will never unless the program most likely will not get fully funded and horses in a legal way end up in “sale authority” status and head for the butchers in Mexico or Canada…….a ground swell of Americans say, “enough, is enough”………………. find a way to kick the BLM out of management, and bring on people not included into the grazing community, or good ole boy network.

We can write and strengthen legislation and remove the Wild Horse and Burro Office from BLM and place it on its own with a budget and the opportunity to create new management through independent study. I think anything is possible if we make the plan and carry it out. Our public horses and burros need public scrutiny for their safety and for the public to know and enjoy them. BLM does not want them but We Do! Occupy Wild Horse and Burro Program!

what is this hogwash about “sweeping changes”? When you buy SA horses you sign a piece of paper saying you will not sell those horses to slaughter subject to federal prosecution..that is what Tom Davis signed every time he bought SA horses..requiring a 6 month holding period is laughable..they will ignore it, there is no enforcement by BLM..they have abdicated all their legal responsibility and ask the public to report any SA horses at slaughter houses..I asked for the name of the buyer of all the SA horses at Canon City…sally told me she could not release that info because of privacy issues so how would I know who to track? an organization such as Animal Angels should approve buyers of semi loads..they have information and experience to vet these people..BLM doesn’t and its not in their “interests” to do so. Furthermore..by now requiring “the buyer” to furnish transportation rather than delivering the horses..they have no verification of where the horses went to….but that is their preferred outcome..then they cannot be drug into court as an accessory to a crime and makes it easier to claim ” I didn’t know”…BLM contractors delivered every one of the 1700 SA horsesDavis bought..they knew the exact location of them .there is no purpose to this change other.than to protect themselves in a court of law..can anyone show me 1 thing in the proposed changes that protect the SA?

“The government is now making sweeping changes as a result”. That would be a refreshing change, which is much needed. Thanks to Fox 31 Denver’s Jeremy Hubbard for bringing this to the public’s attention, while providing insight on this extremely important issue. Our wild horses need a voice and this is one of many ways to do just that.

The only “sweeping change” will be that the BLM will find other ways to sweep this under the rug.

This needs to stop now. If those in power really wanted it to stop right now it would happen. Too much foot dragging while animals die. Precious equines and burros, our national heritage just being slaughtered and so many voice opposition but is it heard? I really hope 2013 turns out to be different in that we finally stop this for real.

ANIMAL LAW COALITION/2009
Excerpts:
http://www.animallawcoalition.com/wild-horses-and-burros/article/1081
There should be a public hearing and investigation held by Congress regarding BLM’s management of America’s wild horses and burros particularly before yet another plan essentially approved only by BLM and DOI is put in place. There should be a moratorium on all gathers until Congress has completed public hearings and an investigation and reached a decision about the appropriate management of these animals consistent with the laws that protect them. These are after all America’s wild horses and burros.
Shouldn’t Congress at least have a hearing or investigate whether BLM’s claims are true? Shouldn’t Congress consider whether BLM should even continue as the manager of the wild horses and burros program? An agency that has turned the WFRHBA on its head and instead of managing to maintain free roaming behavior, does so by removing and penning wild horses and burros.Â
It is also questionable whether BLM really has the authority, as it claims, to manage America’s wild horses and burros in all respects pursuant to a multiple use concept. Though WFRHBA mentions “multiple-use relationship” in connection with specified ranges, it is very clear that the directive is to manage these animals otherwise only to “maintain a thriving natural ecological balance on the public lands” and “protect the natural ecological balance of all wildlife species which inhabit such lands, particularly endangered wildlife species”.
In effect, WFRHBA authorizes only limited interference with wild horses and burros in herd areas where they were living in 1971. Nothing about removing wild horses and burros from herd areas where they lived in 1971 to allow multiple use such as cattle grazing, recreation for off road vehicles, mining or development. Also, protecting the ecological balance of all wildlife has never meant rounding up and removing whole species. Especially when there is a law that explicitly protects their right to exist in historic herd areas.

Louie, some of us have been saying for years there needs to be a Congressional investigation but I guess we don’t have the pull or know how to get it done. Perhaps if we could get Congressmen Moran and Whitfield together they would do it . Any suggestions ?

Barbara, I think we do have enough momentum and the ball is rolling. We are seeing Horse and Burro lovers and coalitions forming. Pooling our resources is the key, I believe. I know that there are people working on this and it’s ultimately going to take public pressure. The other thing is that Public Lands are at great risk right now and that impacts a HUGE segment of the population that maybe wouldn’t be interested otherwise. “They” keep hoping that we will all give up and go away, but that just isn’t going to happen. Senator Mary Landrieu has never been happy with the BLM and has every reason to be less than pleased with the Department of the Interior. In fact, the entire state of Louisiana would probably back an investigation.

Sure hope the investigation gets done before it’s too late.
Yes, public lands, water and air are being destroyed faster than ever due to mining , fracking, drilling, grazing by livestock, logging, pollution , etc. See http://www.mojavedesertblog for news on the desert. Here in KY it’s coal mining and mountain top removal . Salazar has approved and speeded up permits to destroy our environment as well as our wild horses and burros.

Worker-owned companies are starting up…why not worker-owned mines? Would that be a possibility?

ESOP: Employee ownership of companies on the rise
The ESOP – Employee Stock Ownership Plan – is, slowly, on the rise. These worker-owned businesses are more productive and could benefit the American economy
One of the hallmarks of employee-owned companies is profitability. Even in 2009, one of the most difficult years for businesses since the 1930s, 66 percent of ESOPs either grew or stayed the same, according to an NCEO survey of 200 firms.
Power of owner-workers
The ESOP firms’ secret? Motivated employee-owners with a stake in the business.
