36-28 against the measure

“Peaceful Moment” by Terry Fitch of Wild Horse Freedom Federation
New Mexico lawmakers have rejected a proposal to study the feasibility of allowing plants to slaughter horses for human consumption.
The measure sparked a lengthy debate Monday in the House, which voted 36-28 against the measure to have a study by the state Department of Agriculture.
A Roswell meat company has proposed resuming horse slaughtering and sued the federal government last year over inaction on its application.
Supporters said a slaughter plant would provide a humane way for dealing with unwanted horses and those left to starve by owners who can’t afford to feed them. They said the horses could be processed to provide meat for human consumption in overseas markets.
Opponents said a better approach is to support private programs that care for unwanted or mistreated horses.

My representative, Tommy Taylor (R – District 1), voted for it. I’m upset, but not surprised. San Juan county is Ag and we have one of the state’s three racetracks. He was Mayor of Farmington for years, and very popular. He hasn’t ever had meaningful opposition, and usually runs unopposed. A “No” vote could have been used as a wedge issue in the next election. Of course, this vote was only for funding a study ,so supporting it was good cover for those in Ag Districts. Who knows how many who voted “Yes” would have actually supported slaughterhouses when push came to shove.

How interesting I would like to know what companies are there and the set up. Since I have been in Social Work (my whole life the horrible detail’s will not be necessary` believe me I have seen the dark side of people) I am just inquiring if there are ways to help end the practice or lesson as a goal.I do not want to chat so much about the topic it sickens me to think of our horses having this done to them.

That is good news for the horses and horse lovers. Not good news for the horse haters.
