Horse meat imported from Poland into the Czech Republic has tested positive for the anti-inflammatory drug Phenylbutazone, which is banned from entering the human food chain.

The Czech Republic veterinary authority reported the finding.

Spokesman Josef Duben said the drug residue was detected in correctly labeled horse meat being sold in a shop in Ostrava, near the Polish border.

They have identified about 300 kilograms of meat in the shipment to date which was delivered to the shop.

Europe has been embroiled in a horse-meat contamination scandal in recent months, which has resulted in tens of millions of ready-to-eat processed beef products being pulled from store shelves in at least a dozen nations.

The scandal has revealed the complexities of the food chain and the potential vulnerability of the system to rogue traders.

  1. Most likely this was just a spot check. They are just scratching the surface. If they were to do a full investigation of ALL the horse meat found, I am sure they would find much, much more toxic meat. If the buyer is not already aware, they are at grave risk.

  2. Good point, Judy! The problem is no one know where that “horsemeat” has already been “blended in” with other meat in the markets or grocery stores….so it’s a veritable “crap shoot” for anyone purchase meat.

  3. This is significant. I hope this will spur more testing for the drugs in Europe. Apparently the Czech republic are the only ones capable enough of testing. If more testing would be correctly done, more would be found. It was also the Czech republic that found the horse meat in the Ikea meatballs.

  4. I believe this is going to hurt the cattle business, because consumers are going to be questioning beef, in general for obvious reasons and rightfully so. As more testing is done, they probably will find it more widespread than they care to admit. They have just touched the surface…

  5. Life’s tough when you’re consuming animals not raised and regulated to be eaten. And when it’s mixed in with animals that are it’s that much tougher. All of this just shows the world how underhanded those that deal in the slaughter of horses are. Bottom feeders, all of them. They have no respect for the horses they kill, no respect for laws governing food, and no respect for the welfare of consumers. We used to have government agencies that protected consumers from people like this. Unless horses are raised specifically for food, each and every horse needs to be tested for illegal drug residues.

Read this article about drugged US race horses, seems it’s pretty much out of control, would you want to eat one of these?

    • Respectfully TerryW I would simply conclude that life’s tough when you’re consuming animals (period). Obviously it’s extremely “tough” for the animals themselves who aren’t consider any further than what the meat on their bones is valued as. Secondly, it’s tough on an evolving culture that is rightfully questioning the ethics of consuming any sentient being at all.

We know that horses are remarkable creatures that have personalities, quirks, individual preferences and well… An individuality unique to each one – Just like we do. So too have the pigs, chickens and cows that sadly aren’t seen at all as as they are trapped behind a veil of a label that we tagged them with. Up till recently they tragically were seen only as “food animals”. Still, they love their lives and are just as deserving of it as any horse is.

People are beginning to understand the complexity in all sentient life… It makes the case for equal treatment to all species that much more valid. Surely as we learn more and more that there is no difference that really matters regarding the “value” of a hen or a horse or a dog or a pig – We will come to the conclusion that no one really wants to die. No one is really “born” or “bred” to be anything except what we (selfishly) choose it to be. We can certainly change those choices… We can once and for good, treat all life with equal respect and kindness. And surely mankind will not suffer if we opt to be consistently compassionate towards all. I know the nonhumans would be very pleased with that choice.

  6. I agree with all of you! Has anyone kept a list of the gready idiots envolved in this lucerest issue? Everthing starts with one action & grows from there. Anyone know who the first gready idiot was. Who went to the BLM first? Sure would like to see an organized list!

  7. This is the worst news we could get, but COMPLETELY predictable. I sincerely hope that all stops are pulled now to ban the slaughter of horses. And God protect the people who ate the meat.

  8. Am I surprised?! HELL NO I’M NOT! This is EXACTLY what we told Governor Fallin our fears are and were. Can we now say WE TOLD YOU SO!

Bring horse slaughter back to this country and you just watch our food chain get contaminated. With no funding for inspections–who’s going to be minding the henhouse making sure no contamination happens?

I didn’t want Obama for Pres. But I voted for him over Romney. Sorry I just can’t past all that republican hatred towards women. But Obama has blown it BIG TIME!

Yesterday I was sent a video link to a woman who was arrested for trying to pass on her petition (all the sig were on disc). It was on Monsanto. Obama promised labeling and to date NADA. In fact, he signed that Protection Bill.

Washington is a mess. I wish I had the skills to clean house…

  9. Margaret I totally agree with you. I supported Obama from the beginning in Illinois and he always was very supportive of animal rights. I think Washington changes those who normally are moral and just. It seems in this area of politics the dirty you are the better off you are. How about the
governor who left for South America to be with his soul mate..and left the state without telling anyone. This craft guy is now running for a legislative position..What??? Are they all going or have gone mad??? Talk about not leaving anything to the younger generation..
