Horse Slaughter Plants Set August 5 as Target to Begin Killing American Horses

A Call to Action by R.T. Fitch ~ co-founder/president of Wild Horse Freedom Federation

If ever there was a time to contact your Congressman, NOW is that time!!

"Don't Slaughter Us" ~ by Terry Fitch of Wild Horse Freedom Federation

“Don’t Slaughter Us” ~ by Terry Fitch of Wild Horse Freedom Federation

Equine Advocates around the world are shocked and angry that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved applications for horse slaughter inspections at a predatory slaughter plant in Roswell, New Mexico, and another in Sigourney, Iowa.

There is also a distinct possibility that the USDA is likely to grant horse slaughter inspections at a plant in Gallatin, Missouri, in the coming days.

But thanks to the efforts of of Front Range Equine Rescue, the HSUS and others the killing will not start until after a scheduled court hearing on their lawsuit set for August 2nd. The plants attorney expects the slaughterhouses to prevail at the hearing and they are both planning to start slicing and dicing our companion horses on August 5th.

This gives us only two weeks to push our Congressional representatives to pass the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act and shut down this horrendous specter hanging over our country’s equines once and for all.  (It will also protect unsuspecting humans from consuming toxic horsemeat.)

The ASPCA has made contacting your Congressman as painless as possible, simply click (HERE) and enter your zip code to be directed to a pre-filled in form that will be blasted to your Congressman asking that they support SAFE Act.

Please don’t delay, the horses are running out of time and YOU are the only voice they have.
Contact your Congressman today!!!

The history of horse slaughter in the United States speaks for itself. I can’t believe Roswell is allowing this to happen to their town. I will call the President again and everyone else.

Horses don’t matter to these people and quite frankly neither do humans as it is going to be so terribly awful there in Roswell New Mexico with the stench of death and the screams of the innocent permeating the atmosphere. blood flooding the water way. Sorry for what is to com,e because of the greed of a few outweigh the needs of the many. Tears in Heaven. Pray for the horses. that is all they’ve got left.

Just the other day we looked at a horse property for sale-they were willing to leave their horses if we wanted them-she also stated that she knew people who would give me their horse if I wanted one.
I see so many here-that are not abused-but not used anymore-that I fear for them if something like slaughter actually starts up-I am actually sick to my stomach.

  8. Roswell, New Mexico is heavily dependent upon tourism for its economy. I suggest sending a polite email to the mayor, city councilmen and city manager to let them know how approval of this slaughterhouse is going to be a permanent detriment to Roswell’s tourist industry.

They have an upcoming court hearing in 2 weeks. Many Roswell residents, if not most, oppose this slaughterhouse.

    I’ve gathered the email addresses for them: roswellmayor@roswell-nm.gov, l.fry@roswell-nm.gov, J.Oropesa@roswell-nm.gov, D.Huckabee@roswell-nm.gov, S.Henderson@roswell-nm.gov, J.Craig@roswell-nm.gov, J.Best@roswell-nm.gov, A.Sandoval@roswell-nm.gov, S.Sanchez@roswell-nm.gov, J.Perry@roswell-nm.gov, E.Velasquez@roswell-nm.gov, B.Foster@roswell-nm.gov

Aren’t they currently being killed in Mexico? AND, under disgustingly, inhumane conditions? As much as I DON’T want to see horse slaughter at all, will the US slaughter houses be more humanely and properly monitored than the places our poor horses are being butchered now? Who the hell eats horsemeat in the US anyway? So, if US slaughter houses are NOT permitted to operate here, what vial practices are we allowing to take place elsewhere? I’m just sick about this!!!! My own horse was a rescue that was saved from New Holland. The thought of her ending up on someone’s dinner plate makes me want to puke!

  13. Another congressman signed on to the anti-horse slaughter bill, but not a one in the senate except for the original senators that introduced the bill. I cannot imagine why the USDA pulled this. They could have made a lot of excuses for not allowing these plants to start up, but they didn’t. I think that the USDA employees are buds with the cattle industry, the horse racing industry and anyone that needs horse slaughter to continue and they are paid off under the table. So our tax dollars are going to pay inspectors, with the EU having blocked US horse meat being sent to Europe just where is this contaminated meat going to go anyway? Who will be buying it ???

I believe she also was paid off. No one will ever know how much was put in her reelection fund, but money talks. And this is the outcome. There is no end to the greed nor will there ever be.

  16. Now I am not excusing horse slaughter but headlines the other day on my computer~~~~”65% of people in America not American”~~~ when I go to the store and look at meat it states it comes from Mexico-Canada-USA-are they telling me that we do not raise enough cattle in this country to feed our people, we have to get meat from 2 other countries? If that is the case we are in deep $hit. If 65% of the people here are not American-it’s that 65% that will buy and eat horse meat
Are the 80% we talk about-only 80% of the 35% that are left? If we do not stand up for these horses now with more than blogging, signing petions and calling, then our horses are doomed. I sit here and I am mad as Hell, but if one of our “so called” experts doesn’t step out of their comfort zone and organize the advocates~~~~~well that is pretty telling to me, how about you?

    • They eat horse meat in Mexico that’s why I joined numbersusa.com to fight against another amnesty for all the Mexicans that have sneaked into the country to the tune of 20 million or more. I have mentioned this before about the Mexican plants feeding their workers lunch made up of horse meat. These are the ones in Florida that have been caught slaughtering horses, the few that are caught. Its sold on the black market. The number of 65% of the population that are not Americans is right. There is 1 million legal immigrants allowed in the country every year. That has been going on since Ted Kennedy and some politician friends changed our immigration laws in 1964-65. This is the reason all of our large cities are beginning to look like India. The government started favoring third world countries over Europeans and left the doors open for the past 48 years. The census now says that between 10 and 20 years is the time line for the white population to become a minority in the US. It also allows thousands of refugees in every year from countries in the Middle East and African countries that has been in wars for years. They don’t have a clue as to just who these people are.

Invite people from all over the us to show up to protest. Ask people to walk together if they dont own a horse or just cant bring theirs, strength in numbers. Wear maybe red, white and blue for the theme. Have each person bring a simple protest letter that asks to stop this. Call the protest Saddle up your horses! Bring on the silver show saddles and your bezt old tack dress nice all for the same prupose for that day pride in americas horses, please ask the tribes anyone who has a job using horses. The government is allowing our wild horses, burros and wolves to be killed just so they can have undisputed access to public land for fracking and other extractive industries. Suddenly the delisting and ongoing extermintion of wolves comes into sharp focus. Our public land and wildlife is supposed to be held in Public Trust. The Public Trust is being violated! We are all being violated by this corrupt, greedy government! We need help from every corner of the earth as well everyone you know, the media and if possible celebrities. 25. My letter to the President of the United States:

    Dear Mr. President,
I am writing to you today because I, and many, many, others like me, are so disturbed by what is happening to our American Icon, the American horse. To quote part of Rob…ert Redfords’ eloquent letter to Congress on July 5th 2006:

“The horse holds a special place in the hearts and minds of all Americans. Through the centuries, the horse has faithfully served humankind. They pulled our plows, carried our soldiers to battle, and made it possible for pioneers to make their historic journey across the vast plains to settle the West. Our nation was built on their backs.

The horse has no equal in its ability to stir the passions and inspire the spirit. Whether it is the sound of thundering hooves as wild horses move across the open planes, the unbridled heart and stamina of a thoroughbred racehorse driving for the finish line, or the gentle old steed carrying a young child on his or her first ride, the horse will always be sacred to the American people.

The practice of slaughtering horses for human consumption goes against everything that we value as a society and a culture. It belittles the role that they played in shaping our nation, inflicts needless suffering, and is the ultimate betrayal to an animal that has given so much.

In 2004, language was inserted into a massive Appropriations bill that condemned even our wild horses to slaughter. The American wild horse is an enduring symbol of grace, power, and freedom. It is permanently woven into the tapestry of American culture and remains an icon of the west. It would be a tragic mistake to allow this noble creature to disappear from our western landscape and to meet with such a barbaric end. As a nation and as a people, we are capable of doing better. We owe a debt of gratitude to the horse.”

And so I ask you this Mr. President: Why, when 80% of the American public is against horse slaughter, is this even being considered? Why is there the possibility of a slaughter house opening in my State, New Mexico, when there is documented evidence of the disaster visited upon Kaufman, Texas, the last town ruined by horse slaughter in America, and well documented by the Mayor, Paula Bacon in a 20 page document? Why does every answer from Congress always start with “No”? Do you really think the American people can continue with a Congress with a 10% approval rating? Or is it even lower now? I am watching the news from Brazil, and I am terribly, terribly worried about MY country. Once thought of as the greatest on earth. If ever there was an issue to unite the American people, the slaughter of our wild horses, and complete disregard for those who do not call their horse “livestock” but, instead call them by their pet name. Because that’s what they are, a companion, a pet, and something that is loved. There has been many a heart that almost burst in gratitude and love for a beloved horse.

The people in Brazil united to fight over the rise in the cost of a bus ticket. How much more will the 80% be, in unison, over the ingratitude and senseless deaths of our noble American steeds?

And so I am asking you, please do one of these two things right away: Sign an Executive Order banning horse slaughter and export for slaughter or tell Congress to fast track the SAFE Act (H.R. 1094 and S. 541) so you can sign it into law — which ever is the fastest. And to end a practice that is against the WILL OF THE PEOPLE.
I remain hopeful and an American Citizen,
    Most sincerely,
    B. McGahee (from New Mexico and presently residing in Venice, Italy)

  26. I just got back from a fun-filled, wonderful vacation with my 16 year old daughter, to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. While there, we met some people with the Humane Society of the United States. They had an informational booth set up, & I told them we lived in Missouri, & how much we love horses & are SO against horse slaughter, so I was asked to email them because they are looking for Mo. advocates to fight against the two planned slaughter facilities in my state, which I intend to do. I don’t know what a mom & wife can really do, but I WILL risk getting arrested & going to jail to save horses from this horror! The reason people left Europe & other countries was to start a NEW life, in a new place, start over & break away from old ways, customs, & gain FREEDOM! Right now, America is going ass-backward, back to what our ancestors left! When they came here, it was to leave that behind, to leave all the old, ancient, barbaric ways & beliefs. This is America, we do NOT have to, or need to, go back to that messed up idea that eating horses is somehow “ok”. It wouldn’t & doesn’t matter, if there are or not, a so-called over-population of unwanted horses, WE DON’T EAT HORSES IN THIS COUNTRY! I greatly respect all who have ever, or are still, serving this country, to protect her & us, but as of this second, I hate America, & everything she now stands for, because it certainly is not freedom, it certainly is not “for the people, by the people”, most (though there is a small out-numbered minority who are against this) politicians are corrupt, greedy, self-centered “you-know-whats”. I can not even contact ANY of my congressmen, or any Missouri politician, because they’re all either for horse slaughter, or are too damn wimpy to stand up & fight! I am no longer proud to be an American, & I guess it’s time my family & I learn how to shoot a gun (something else I’ve always hated & feared), so we can protect our horse, our other pets, & our family. I am very worried & afraid of the America that is coming. People don’t care about eachother, or about life, look at all the violence everywhere, how can we expect “them” to care about horses, or any animal? By the way, on our way home from KY. to MO., we saw countless empty slaughter trucks going the opposite way. We are hoping & praying they either just delivered cattle or hogs somewhere, or were going to pick some up, & not on their way to pick up horses!

  27. I’d like to see a unified organization, (one body) whose sole application is for researching proper business practices with all breeds of horses. Focusing on ways to curb populations by strictly enforcing the numbers of horses allowed to be bred each year, investigate hotspot geographical areas of abuse, lobby for stiffer fines and jail time for cruelty cases, yearly inspection(s) and a yearly licensing fee to be paid for any type of breeding operation(s) that record IRS earnings from equine livestock sales. Horses are no longer primarily used as work animals needed to power industry as they were 100+ years ago. They are pleasure animals, entirely bred for pleasure. In order for the horse slaughter industry to thrive, they need a product. That product is UNWANTED, or sick horses. It may sound simplistic, but controlling the horse population in a way that there is no surplus of unwanted horses, you will effectively put them out of business. It is a metamorphosis that needs to take place over span of time, allowing breeders to adjust, but it can be done. I firmly believe this needs to happen.
