A huge, huge thank you to Victoria McCullough, FL State Senator Joe Abruzzo and Vice President Joe Biden. No matter what you read, they drove this effort from the starting gate to the finish line.

US heavy-weights join Atamanenko on Parliament Hill to take aim at horse meat industry

Horse slaughter Bill C-571 up next week for 2nd reading debate and vote

OTTAWA – New Democrat MP, Alex Atamanenko (BC Southern Interior) is holding a press conference to discuss his private members bill to restrict the slaughter of horses to only those raised primarily for human consumption and which carry a lifetime medication history. Bill C-571 is up for its second hour of debate on Monday, May 12 following which a vote is likely to be held on Wednesday May 14.

With over half the horses slaughtered in Canada being sourced from the US where slaughter has been shut down since 2006, he will be joined by US heavyweights Victoria McCullough (Owner of Chesapeake Petroleum, International Equestrian and Philanthropist) and Florida State Senator Joseph Abruzzo. Using arguments based on science and legal liability the US heavyweights were able to convince US Vice President Joe Biden to add language defunding federal inspections at US slaughter facilities for horses in the 2014 Omnibus Bill signed by President Obama this past January. Horses in the US cannot be slaughtered without federal inspections.

Also taking part will be Sinikka Crosland, Executive Director of the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (CHDC), a key ally and promoter of Atamanenko’s Bill C-571 and Dr. Ray Kellosalmi, CHDC medical and toxicology expert.

    • At least it would eliminate horses being shipped over the border from the U.S. for slaughter.
And it’s a start. It’s likely the best they can do at this time.

      • Its NOT the best they can do – since we’re NOT the ones being systematically slaughtered by these butchers- its easy to stand on the sidelines & say its a “start” its BS – they’re STILL going to butcher horses – probably MORE than now because the meds will NOT be in Horses SOLEY RAISED FOR MEAT IN CANADA – they are NOT a peaceful country – still barbaric – this WOULD NOT eliminate the trafficking of horses to MEXICO – & don’t believe that this would REALLY stop medicated horses from being slaughtered – STILL the same felons doing the SAME business as usual – just cloaking it under a different banner while making themselves look good in the process – seems like the same thing it always has been!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Yes, we can’t provide lifetime medical histories on wild horses and certainly not for abused by being drugged-up race horses, and we don’t raise horses for consumption. Watch that loophole though.

    • They’re NOT doing anything different for the horses – just calling it by a different name – RAISING HORSES SOLELY FOR CONSUMPTION – means Horse WILL STILL BE slaughtered in Canada – & Mexico!!

    • DId you read the article? It says they are going to try to end horse slaughter for horses who are raised with medications & WILL BE encouraging the RAISING OF HORSE SOLELY FOR MEAT PRODUCTION – which means they will not contain the “harmful” drugs – they think this is a viable solution – ITS NOT!! – No offense intended with the “Caps” – but this IS NOT a REAL solution for the horses!

    • Its NOT a start – no offense intended with my posts – just trying to set the record straight & this is the same old thing they’ve been doing all along – they’re just trying to wrap it in a different package to make it more palatable for the poorly informed public. Horses WILL STILL BE SLAUGHTERED – ONLY this time, they’ll be BRED FOR THAT PURPOSE – this means they will specifically create horses (& probably more than they already slaughter now) to send to SLAUGHTER! – they think this will end the arguments against horse slaughter by changing to raising horses for meat production – REALLY??? ITS STILL HORSE SLAUGHTER!! & Horses will still be SHIPPED TO MEXICO & JAPAN! And other places. The SAFE ACT Has to be passed in the U.S. – this is the only thing that will protect AMERICAN HORSES!! Then we can start on making Canada a little less barbaric than Mexico! AND, DON’T BELIEVE for a minute that this will really stop horse slaughter for the medicated horses, too – cause it won’t – its STILL the same butchers!!!

  3. DON’T BE FOOLED INTO COMPLACENCY WITH THIS KIND OF POLITICAL RHETORIC & SLIGHT OF HAND – ITS STILL HORSE SLAUGHTER & ALWAYS WILL BE – MORE DELAYS FOR DOING THE RIGHT THING WHILE MAKING THEMSELVES LOOK GOOD, & looks LIKE THEY’RE ACTUALLY WORKING ON A SOLUTION, WHICH THIS IS NOT – HORSE SLAUGHTER IS STILL HORSE SLAUGHTER NO MATTER WHAT KIND OF PRETTY BOW THEY PUT ON IT!!
