Update on wild horses in New Zealand

SOURCE:  HORSETALK.nz.co

Horsetalk New Zealand has posted an update on the Kaimanawa wild horses and the efforts by the charitiable society, Kaimanawa Heritage Horses and Kaimanawa Wild Horse Preservation Society to find homes for many of the horses after they were rounded up by New Zealand’s Department of Conservation, so that the horses wouldn’t be sent to slaughter.

This quote from Kaimanawa Heritage Horses stands out: “They’ll also have lost their glossy, proud and defiant bearing from their wild days so be careful you take your time and let the horses choose the timing for each stage of their training …”

  1. I have mixed feelings about this. I am ‘grateful’ that these animals weren’t slaughtered, but a life in captivity for a wild animal leaves me feeling sad. Our perception of what a good life is, is not necessarily a good life for them. A life domesticated behind a fence or with a rider on your back, or confined to a zoo is not free. I’ve read comments from well-meaning people that such as ‘oh, they’ll be safer in a zoo and won’t have to hunt for their meals anymore and won’t starve’. Freedom is better. I wish more animals could go to more open sanctuaries. There’s so much we don’t understand about animals, and yet we make such final decisions for them. Sigh.

  2. Is New Zealand taking lessons from our BLM!! Shameful that any of them are torn from their families; sent to slaughter; not to be free for the remainder of their lives.
    How proud they are..
