BLM crawls into bed with Ranchers by removing wild horses to allow subsidized cow herders more profit
CEDAR CITY – After months of being under pressure from local ranchers and the Iron County Commissioners to bring the number of wild horses on public lands down to the appropriate management levels, the Bureau of Land Management is slated to begin a wild horse gather on Monday.
The gather, which is happening within the Bible Spring Complex between July 28 and Aug. 5, is open to the public to allow them to view the daily operations so long as the safety of the animals, staff and observers are not jeopardized and operations are not disrupted.
The BLM said it plans to gather and remove some 140 horses from the Blawn Wash Herd Management Area — one of four HMAs making up the Bible Spring Complex. Gather operations also will extend to the adjacent Highway 21, where BLM officials say 10-30 wild horses pose traffic safety hazards.
Those interested in watching the gathers can meet at 5 a.m. at the KB Express Convenience Store, 238 S. Main St., Milford.
From there, BLM officials will escort the parties out to the range that BLM spokeswoman Lisa Reid said will take about an hour and a half to get to.
Participants must provide their own transportation, water, and lunches. Reid recommends the public dress for harsh, summer field conditions. Four-wheel drives or vehicles with higher clearance are also recommended.
While Reid said she is going to try and allow viewers to be able to see as much as possible, she suggests bringing binoculars.
“It’s going to be hard because this range isn’t conducive to viewing and especially with 50 people out there,” she said. “I’m going to do everything I can though so that people get an opportunity to see as much as possible. I just can’t guarantee anything.”
Following the gather, the horses will be available for adoption through the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Program. Animals not adopted will be cared for in long-term pastures…(CONTINUED)

Utterly ridiculous not to mention against the law. Ms. Jewell needs to resign as she obviously can’t handle the job Congress mandated.

Is there an environmentally sound AML for domestic livestock which can also be mandated and then enforced against the will of the owners of the animals? It is hard to imagine removing 140 horses (with principal rights) would have much affect in comparison to leaving thousands (?) of subsidized privately owned animals on the range. Since beef prices are very high now it seems the public is being tasked with subsidizing both the removal of animals “we” own and pay for, as well as private for-profit livestock interests… a significant portion of whose production is exported.
What exactly are we paying for here, and why? One begins to think we citizens should also be able to round up and sell for “adoption” the domestic livestock we find grazing on public lands. They are inarguably invasive species and their presence is not in the public interest whatsoever.
Maybe the BLM could charge admission (and sell filming rights?) to a genuine “wild west” sort of cattle roundup to purge the public lands, then put the cattle in long term holding pens (after castration and segregation) and send the bill to those private owners for the services. It would surely be more than $1.35 a month for a cow and calf, and would surely be more just management.

As mentioned in previous articles, we received information via Freedom of Information Act that there was 29 Wild Horses, inventoried and area Bait and Trap Roundup defined, listed as “DEAD” – from Murderer’s Creek Horse Management Area, in the State of Oregon (the spreadsheet detail given after article below).
A Recent Interview on shooting Wild Horses
This interview was with Clinton Garsh, a 65 year old cowboy, who worked his entire life on one ranch or another riding fence-line, rounding up cattle for branding, and wrangler on “. . .many a God-fer-Sakin cattle and horse drives,” as Clinton says. He had moved to Oregon 3 years earlier, from a ranch in Montana, Divorced the wife, and looking for work as a cowhand in Oregon. He says he gave up on the eastern Oregon bunch, as they shot horses and too much dirt and dust to swallow!
Here is a small portion of the interview:
John: “Did you find any jobs in Oregon you liked yet?”
Clinton: “Thought everything fine for awhile, anyway, over in Eastern Oregon, corporate ranching and all. I found out things there I probably shouldn’t have.”

They are not ‘honoring the law’. Wyoming is going to lose its cultural heritage, and no one will want to visit them. Perhaps they are all happy with that and consider oil rigs the New West to embrace. The New West doesn’t have any distinguishing characteristics from any other area in the country, except for ugliness. Who will want to discover their National Parks and historic places when there is nothing there?

July 29
Summary: Twenty-five horses gathered today- 11 studs, 10 mares and 4 foals.
All animals gathered today were body class 4- 5.
Animals gathered: 25 Animals shipped: 36 Total Deaths Today: 0 Acute: N/A Chronic/Pre-existing: N/A
=====
MY CALCULATIONS HERE:
21 STUDS + 11 STUDS = 32 STUDS
22 MARES + 10 MARES = 32 MARES
2 FOALS + 4 FOALS = 6 FOALS
-THE FIRST BAND/S CAPTURED HAD A HERD SIZE OF 45 OF WHICH 2 ARE FOALS, FOR A REPRODUCTION RATE OF 4.444%
-THE SECOND BAND/S CAPTURED HAD A HERD SIZE OF 25 OF WHICH 4 ARE FOALS FOR A REPRODUCTION RATE OF 16%
OUT OF A TOTAL HERD OF 70 TOTAL HEAD ONLY 6 ARE FOALS.
~THE OVERALL COMBINED REPRODUCTION RATE IS 8.57%~
Where are all the missing foals from these “overpopulating” herds which Sally Jewell told us are “breeding like rabbits” as I recall?
