Utah lawmakers consider ban on horse tripping

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah lawmakers this year are considering banning horse tripping practices that involve the use of ropes to lasso the animals and bring them to the ground.

A bill from West Jordan Republican Rep. Ken Ivory would ban the practice for sport or entertainment.

Ivory says horses are companions and service animals and they should not be brutalized.

Horse tripping has been banned in 13 states and several other states are considering restricting the practice.

Horse roping and horse tripping are not sanctioned by Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association or the National Professional Rodeo Association.

The Deseret News reports critics of horse tripping bans say they open the door for criticism from animal-rights activists of rodeo events.

  1. I’ve watched videos of horses necks being strangled so hard that they shrink to nearly twice as small or even smaller. I would think we are far beyond finding such a thing entertaining. You know it’s downright unethical when Temple Grandin calls it abusive.

  2. Please ban this practice of horse tripping. No more slaughter of these majestic animals. Thank you for taking a stand against this abuse.

  3. Utah is not alone in barbaric behavior. This disregard for animals and people that do not have the “same views” is very widespread throughout this country, primarily, it seems in the West and South. Though with the movement of people today, both animal supporters and abusers are living very close to each other. Unfortunately, whether the abusers are staying pro or becoming con, they do not seem to change their historical voting patterns and continue to allow the few to rule the many. It doesn’t take much intelligence to understand that horses are much more severely injured by tripping than most other livestock… and they do kill and maim other livestock in a similar manner. It should be a no brainer to ban any activity that causes injury without “any” chance of avoiding the injury. Many humans are just incredibly self-centered and ignorant to new research on any topics concerning reduction of violence / abuse. Don’t expect logic.

  4. It should be banned in all fifty states. This is not sport but destructive abuse of the horses subjected to it. I don’t give a damn about custom where this is concerned .

  5. Cruelty to animals, also called animal abuse or animal neglect, is the human infliction of suffering or harm upon non-human animals, for purposes other than self-defense or survival.

  6. Horse tripping is cruel and absolutely disgusting to be considered a “sport” or “amusing” or “entertaining”! It is animal abuse and should be stopped immediately, and those people who are responsible, should be punished and never allowed to work with animals again.
