Wild Horse and Burro Advocacy Group Funds Two More Lawsuits over Bureau of Land Management Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Violations
Pinehurst, TX – Wild Horse Freedom Federation (WHFF) has announced that it has recently filed two additional FOIA lawsuits, so it is currently funding five Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuits, that allege the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) violated its duties under FOIA. Records sought are in connection with the BLM’s Wild Horse & Burro Program. Debbie Coffey, V.P. and Dir. of Wild Horse Affairs for Wild Horse Freedom Federation, and Wild Horse Freedom Federation are the Plaintiffs. The lawsuits are pending in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in Washington, DC.
Attorneys Daniel J. Stotter of Corvallis, Oregon and C. Peter Sorenson of Eugene, Oregon filed the lawsuits.

On January 21, 2009, former President Obama sent a memorandum to the heads of executive departments and agencies regarding an open and transparent government, stating that, “Transparency promotes accountability and provides information for citizens about what their Government is doing.”
President Obama continued, “The government should not keep information confidential merely because public officials might be embarrassed by the disclosure, because errors and failures might be revealed, or because of speculative or abstract fears. Nondisclosure should never be based on an effort to protect the personal interests of Government officials at the expense of those they are supposed to serve.”
Wild Horse Freedom Federation (WHFF) is a registered, Texas non-profit corporation with 501c3 status in all 50 states. WHFF puts people between America’s wild equids and extinction through targeted litigation against governmental agencies whose documented agendas include the eradication of wild horse and burros from public, federal and state lands. WHFF is funded exclusively through the generosity of the American public.

Wow, I cannot believe all this is happening, and so fast. The wild horses and burros deserve to have their freedom in safe surroundings. This round up and slaughter sounds so horrific and extreme-the type of trigger effect that leads ever so quickly to extinction. These are bloodlines we should be trying to preserve, not destroy. Best of luck with your lawsuits. I don’t know what else I can do from Australia. Suggestions?

Thank you! Ever since the BLM updated their website, I haven’t been able to recover population and removal statistics from FY 2008 onward, only from FY 1996 – FY 2007. Unacceptable.

We printed up this information prior to BLM’s removal, and plan to make it available to the public on the Wild Horse Freedom Federation website.
THe BLM also removed all Herd Area maps from the internet and their “new” national website, and removed the names and bios of the National Wild Horse & Burro Advisory committee. Not only that, we no longer know the name of any BLM employees at the state and local BLM offices. When the BLM removed the state office websites, they removed the directories.

And since you mentioned that the BLM took down their state office websites, that might explain why I wasn’t able to find a phone number to an office in or near the Lake Pleasant HMA in AZ. My family and I had plans to go there last month to see the burros and I was trying to find a way to get in touch with someone for information on which trails have the most burro activity and such.

Corrupt behavior most often occurs in secrecy, behind closed doors. Therefore, the most effective way to prevent government corruption is to make the activities of public officials transparent to the American people. Federal open records laws, such as the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), provide access to government documents and public records.

Hi Icy, I think you may have been a little confused by what I was noting. There are HMA maps, but NOT HERD AREA (HA) maps. Also, the phone numbers you listed are only to the offices, and are not an office DIRECTORY giving the public names and titles of personnel (like wild Horse & Burro Specialist, Range Management, or handling mining and oil and gas issues, etc), with their contact information.
