R.T. Fitch’s life has been anything but ordinary. Straight out of high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force Band during the Vietnam era, and while stationed in Hawaii, he spent weekends at Sea Life Park training penguins, sea lions, and whales. His path through life has taken many unexpected turns—including more than a few lessons in love—until meeting his wife, Terry, brought a lasting partnership and a shared passion for animals.
Over the course of his adult career, R.T. worked internationally in multiple countries, gaining a broad, global perspective that colors both his worldview and his writing. Now rooted in Texas, he and Terry live on a small farm surrounded by four-legged companions with paws, claws, and hooves. Together, they have devoted years to equine rescue and wild horse protection.
An ordained volunteer chaplain and professional Santa Claus for a local historical society—with Terry by his side as Mrs. Claus—R.T. brings warmth, wisdom, and joy to every season. His work reflects a life of service, wonder, and connection to both people and animals.
He is the author of Straight from the Horse’s Heart, a moving collection of true rescue stories and spiritual reflections, and Fangs of Light, a supernatural tale steeped in symbolic and metaphorical storytelling. The first in a planned trilogy, Fangs of Light blends myth and mystery to explore themes of identity, redemption, and the power of empathy—offering readers not only suspense and intrigue but a deeper look at the light and shadow within us all.
A Pennsylvania horse trainer is facing felony charges after she allegedly sold as many as 120 horses to buyers for a Canadian slaughterhouse, according to court documents.
State police say that 24-year-old Chester County-native Kelsey Lefever — a well-known horse trainer and former Devon Horse Show competitor — promised owners she could find good homes for their horses when they could no longer race, according to the Paulick Report, a news website for the thoroughbred industry. What she really found for these horses, was a quick death, according to court documents.
Words matter in life. And the case of the the wild donkeys of West Texas is no exception.
If you call them “Wild Burros” you could be inclined to see them as scrappy survivors, emblems of the Old West. If you call them “Feral Donkeys,” well, then they sound like pests that need to be exterminated.
In Texas, what we have here is a failure to communicate.
At a Statehouse dominated by elephants, the donkey got some love in a short parade in downtown Austin on Wednesday.
The occasion was a protest of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department’s shoot-to-kill policy concerning feral burros in Big Bend Ranch State Park. Marjorie Farabee , founder of the Wild Burro Protection League and director at the Wild Horse Freedom Federation, had a helper drop some 103,000 petitions against shooting the burros at Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst’s office.
“Because Gov. Perry’s office refused authorization of delivery,” Farabee said. “Be sure you write that.”
It was not illegal for Kelsey Lefever to bring rescued horses to auction to be sold for slaughter. But it was illegal for her to tell the horses’ owners that she was finding them good homes, according to Pennsylvania state police.
Tomorrow, 1/18/2011,the Wild Burro Protection League and Red Horse Nation will be herding burros to Austin to deliver more than 100,000 signatures to Governor Rick Perry.
The signatures are part of a Change.org petition demanding that the Presidential hopeful stop his administration’s wild burro slaughter in Texas’ Big Bend Ranch State Park.

Now, a pair of equine welfare advocates is offering $2,000 to anyone who can make a convincing argument in favor of reviving the horse processing industry in the United States.
Chicago (EWA) – The Equine Welfare Alliance (EWA) children’s letter writing campaign to end horse slaughter, first announced on January 5th, has now received the support of The United Federation of Teachers (UFT) Humane Education Committee.
The Equine Welfare Alliance (EWA) was contacted by the committee to offer their support and to obtain additional information on the campaign. The committee enclosed a letter from one of their teachers with an email voicing support from Senator Joe Lieberman.
It might not be a lot of money but Jerry Finch, Founder and President of Habitat for Horses, called out the propaganda perpetuating horse-killers only to have the dark-side fall flat on their faces. He threw down one thousand dollars as a challenge for the horse-haters to verify why horse slaughter is necessary and from the handful of mindless followers of “Slaughterhouse” Sue Wallis and Dave “Doink” Duquette only the lamest dared to show their faces and still not one solid, scientific, moralistic, ethical fact has been brought forward to support why it is necessary to butcher our companion horses and then eat their flesh. Not one single reason; so we are going to up the ante and I will, personally, throw in an additional thousand in an effort to get these money mongering cockroaches to crawl out from under their rocks and stand in the light of day and attempt to support their failed philosophy. Just one, can any of them truly debate and substantiate their bloody stance without subverting the truth and manipulating legal actions from behind closed doors? I don’t think so. We may as well make it $100,000.00 and watch the circus because there is no chance on this green earth that these unenlightened cult of misguided livestock dealers will ever be able prove their point beyond any reasonable shadow of doubt.

They like to call themselves “Pro-Slaughter” as if there is an ounce of good in them but the bunch that supports the uncivilized practice of brutally slaughtering companion horses and then feasting upon their carcasses has nothing “Pro” about them, in fact they are about as “Anti” as you can get: Anti-Horse, Anti-Eduction, Anti-Truth, Anti-Morals and above all, Anti-American. They speak to all that is wrong with our society as they pervert and twist our governmental processes for the sake of a few extra coins in their pockets as they torment the gentle equine soul and spout untruths, lies, rumor and innuendo as if it were fact and one American has called them out and said enough is enough.
