EWA Announces International Equine Conference Speakers

We are excited to release the list of confirmed presenters, thus far. We’ll provide the names of additional speakers as they are confirmed and will release the agenda once all speakers have been confirmed.

The registration form should be ready within the next two weeks. We anticipate providing local hotel information within the next day or two.

The True Unintended Consequences of Horse Slaughter

Over the years, we’ve written about the nonsensical arguments used by those in support of horse slaughter. We’ve scratched our heads and wondered why seemingly intelligent people would use the most illogical, ill conceived arguments and ridiculous euphemisms like “horse harvesting” to try to sway public opinion to embrace horse slaughter.

Mexico Equine Advocates Appeal Globally for Help

Chicago (EWA) –Equine Welfare organizations around the world are responding to an appeal by their Mexican counterparts requesting support in forcing an end to the blatant cruelty and abuse at the San Bernabe Slaughter Auction in the Municipality of Almoloya de Juárez.

A video appeal was released on July 3, revealing the common place abuse of equines heading to slaughter. In an incident that is said to be typical of the mistreatment, a pregnant mare with a broken foot was pushed off a ramp that resulted in her breaking both of her knees. In obvious agony, she was dragged off to slaughter.

Breaking News: Congressman Grijalva Letter Seeks Congressional Support for Wild Horses

WASHINGTON (July 7, 2011) – U.S. Representative Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) is circulating a letter to his House of Representatives colleagues urging their signature on a letter to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) director Bob Abbey regarding their inhumane and costly mismanagement of the Wild Horse and Burro Program. The letter expresses grave concerns to Secretary Salazar and the BLM regarding the creation of non-reproducing herds—especially the extreme danger of spaying wild horse mares.

“Unwanted Horse” Producer Pfizer Sponsors Teleconference to Promote Compromised GAO Report

Chicago (EWA) – A long overdue Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on the effect of closing the US horse slaughter plants is scheduled for release on Wednesday, June 22. Although the report’s contents are to be kept confidential until released, slaughter supporters have been indicating for months that they were leaked the report and have now orchestrated an “Unwanted Horse” teleconference late in the day of the release presumably to promote the report’s findings.

The High Price of Horse Slaughter

Chicago (EWA) – The Equine Welfare Alliance and Animal Law Coalition applaud Rep. Jim Moran and House of Representatives Appropriations Committee members who stood up for the horses this week. Rep. Moran introduced an amendment to the proposed agriculture appropriations bill to make sure commercial horse slaughter in the U.S. remains illegal.
