Federal Court Forces Interior Department to Consider Scientific Evidence Regarding Wild Horse Management

Washington, DC – May 10, 2012 – The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia has rejected an attempt by the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to withhold and ignore critical scientific evidence in its decision-making process for the implementation of a precedent-setting plan to castrate wild stallions. At issue were expert declarations submitted to the BLM from leading experts in wild horse behavior and biology outlining the devastating impacts of castration on the health and natural behaviors of wild free-roaming stallions and wild horse herds.

Obama’s BLM “Slaughter” Advisory Board Shows True Colors on First Day

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has created for themselves yet another PR nightmare with the new appointments of Anti-Horse/Pro-Slaughter activists to their beleaguered and special interest Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Council. Self proclaimed wild horse hater Callie Hendrickson did her homework and is well aware of the massive public outcry over her appointment to the board as she has spent the last several years of her live trying to wipe out the last of the federally protected free roaming wild horses in Colorado. With all of the bad press, she didn’t step across the line in her self-indulgent introduction, today, at day one of the biased BLM meeting being held in Reno, NV.

Lobbyists Work Through Holidays To Block Humane Legislation

Lobbyist Charlie Stenholm has been working hard since before Thanksgiving. First, there was his Opinion piece in The Washington Times blasting proposed legislation protecting circus elephants, tigers and zebras from abuse—something that would hurt his client, Ringling Brothers.

Then, there was the push to get horse slaughter inspection bans reversed, which was accomplished a week later by three U.S. lawmakers who quietly revised a long-overdue spending bill behind closed doors.

We the People, For the Horses

The right to petition the government to complain about something or to demand action on an issue is as old as our country itself—it’s enshrined in the First Amendment, along with rights to freedom of religion, freedom of speech and the press, and freedom to assemble. It’s a fundamental part of our political system.
