Some Horse Sense at Last?

Officially, anyway, the news that the BLM is finally willing to consider a public-private partnership with wild horse advocate Madeleine Pickens is a good thing. After all — as reported in this space many times — the federal wild horse and burro program is a dismal failure. So any proposal that might reinvigorate the program, do a better job of caring for the mustangs and the public range, while also saving millions of taxpayer dollars, is a step in the right direction, even if it is a small step. In that sense, the BLM deserves a round of applause.

Obama’s BLM “Slaughter” Advisory Board Shows True Colors on First Day

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has created for themselves yet another PR nightmare with the new appointments of Anti-Horse/Pro-Slaughter activists to their beleaguered and special interest Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Council. Self proclaimed wild horse hater Callie Hendrickson did her homework and is well aware of the massive public outcry over her appointment to the board as she has spent the last several years of her live trying to wipe out the last of the federally protected free roaming wild horses in Colorado. With all of the bad press, she didn’t step across the line in her self-indulgent introduction, today, at day one of the biased BLM meeting being held in Reno, NV.

BLM Nat. Wild Horse and Burro “Slaughter” Advisory Board Meets Today

Due to a paying job taking priority over domestic travel Terry and I will not be in Reno, NV, today and tomorrow for the gathering of the BLM’s hand picked grazing, cattle, hunting and slaughter special interest Advisory Board meeting where the end and destruction of our national icons will be discussed and planned. Seasoned advocates are well aware that this bogus board ignores and rejects mass public opinion when it comes to the issue of saving the last few federally protected wild horses and burros on public lands but during this meeting all advocates should do their best to declare with disdain the appointment of self-proclaimed horse-hater and slaughter supporter, Callie Hendrickson.

Pickens Responds to Horse Hating Welfare Rancher in CBS Video

When the pro-slaughter crowd, led by the likes of Demar Dahl, talk about past practices as they applied to the management of our wild horses, or the approach perhaps more appropriately referred to as the, if we can’t eat it or make money off of it, let’s kill it, it is important to note they are talking about a time in our distant past. Their reflections speak volumes about the situation we find ourselves in, with over 40,000 wild horses in pens, a senseless gather policy that is destroying one of the Nation’s valuable resources, and a general lack of a coherent strategy to manage our wild horse populations. None of this is what Congress had in mind when they passed an Act 40 years ago to manage AND protect the wild horses in the Western United States.

Update: A Wild Horse Visit to Oklahoma

Last week Lauryn and I attended Summit of the Live Horse in Oklahoma City, organized by our friend and a true friend of all horses, Simone Netherlands of Respect4Horses. Our summit was scheduled to coincide with the Summit of the Horse, an event many of us affectionately refer to as the “Slaughterhouse Summit” or “The Summit of the Dead Horse.” Then, just a couple weeks out, the organizers of the pro-slaughter affair called off their event. We hope it was for lack of support!
