Appeals Court puts hold on District Court’s Thumbs Up for Horse Slaughter

A moment of reliefWe are happy to announce that the Court of Appeal has granted our motion for a temporary injunction, for a short time, staying the district court’s ruling last week. For now, no horses can be slaughtered in America, and the chance of environmental contamination from horse slaughter is again in the hands of the courts. But we will be fighting further this week, and should know more by week’s end.

This is a BIG victory for the horses!!!

    • Thank God this will stop at least for a while. It needs to stop forever. These creatures are here for a reason and it is not for us to kill them. They deserve a life being wild and free and happy. Please stop the slaughter of them forever.

    • I am so pleased that they have baned the slaughter of horses in America. My worry is that they might transport them to another country and that can be horrific for the horses; hope there would be a ban on exporting them as well, Please God!

  1. Thank God…Linda is so right…this is so stressful, but we cannot give up no matter what. We need to get Congress to get off their butts and do what is right for our equine friends…I will be calling Front Range with a donation towards the litigation…a few dollars goes along way if everyone gives something.

  5. IN MEMORY OF MY SISTER, ANIMAL RESCUER AND ADVOCATE, PATTI ANN GRIFFITH, I THANK HER FOR HAVING GOD’S EAR ON THIS ISSUE IN PARTICULAR. SHE GREW UP WANTING NOTHING BUT A HORSE RANCH WHEN SHE GOT OLD ENOUGH TO MOVE OUT AND HER ROOM WAS FULL OF HORSE STATUES. SHE LOVED THEM SO MUCH! SHE DIED AT 13 OF A BRAIN TUMOR BUT SHE IS STILL HERE, LISTENING TO MY PRAYERS AND PASSING THEM ON ALL I DO FOR ALL THE ANIMALS I DO WITH HER IN MIND.

  6. I really hope they stop massacring the very animals that carried us through wars, transported us all over the US and became our beloved pets. I have been trying to convince people that the best and most humane way to keep their populations down without having to round them up for auctions or slaughter them would be to vasectomize males. This method is being used in Africa for elephants and is proving to help reduce numbers without affecting herd structures. Please continue the fight and pass along my suggestion.

  8. I am so grateful that before I go to sleep I know these plants are working. I also had a little light bulb go on a few minutes ago and looked up a report online put out by the Illinois Horse Council and one of slaughters supporters Dr. Kline comments on it. What’s interesting its not about slaughter but it actually refutes their lies about the failure of the industry since the closure of the plant, you may copy this article or save it as evidence because seems things vanish online. http://farmprogress.com/story-illinois-horse-industry-worth-12-billion-annually-9-57418 This was a report published on Feb 20, 2012, that’s 4 years AFTER the closure of the plant in Illinois. They ranked the Horse Industry in Illinois as the 4th Top Recreational Activity in the State and the overall revenue earned 39 Billion in the economy. They also stated that the horses and mules in the state were worth 300 million and that a quarter of a million people ride horses on any given day. They stated that we put more money into the Illinois Economy than Petroleum and Coal Product Manufacturing. We put money into every facet of the economy in horses. This is during economic collapse and the issues they say suppress the horse industry. This is proof that the economy for horses Disappeared and that every one bailed out. In fact it supports the fact that there are more horses and horse related businesses and activities in Illinois than BEFORE the closure. I know you are sick of their propaganda and their lies, so I thought a little truth couldn’t hurt tonight! So Kentucky and Illinois and many other states have come forward to verify their economic outlook within the horse industry is stronger than ever. If we are apart of the 1.2 Billion Dollar Industry we are doing just fine WITH NO slaughter plants!

  9. This is great news.! I’ll take this anyday of the week.

I’m so sick of hearing the same arguments week in and week out–old injured, neglected horses. Don’t these people EVER read about who wants to eat what? Even my former downstairs neighbor could tell you he wouldn’t want to eat an “old” horse–not matter how safe it was. People want young tender flesh.

Neglected horses? What slaughter house will want to slaughter thin starving horses? No flesh, no meat on the bones.

I have never been against putting a horse down because of injury or older age related issues. We’re talking calling in a vet and having done appropriately. Sure it costs. But had you done your homework BEFORE you bought that horse–sticker shock won’t surprise you.

I know many ride Western and I don’t think Pony Club was ever designed for Western. However, there are some great lessons on responsibilities, grooming, barn management etc that one and all could benefit from. In that way, I think anyone wanting to buy a horsie should have to go to Pony Club (or something equivalent)before there allowed to buy.

Funny I haven’t once read a pro person saying something about how the economy bottomed out–and the horse business went downhill AS A RESULT of the economic downturn. The horses didn’t cause WallStreet to fall flat on its face. So if the horses didn’t do it why are folks so thirsty for blood????

  11. These people are nothing but murderers, who have no conscious of killing a beautiful wild animal just because of money. They have just a much right to live as we do.. These people who should be PROTECTING them when instead of they are helping them to kill them. They don’t deserve to be in that line of work !!!!!!

  13. This might just have to go to the top court. It seems like we are fighting not only our government but big business as well. You would think that the FDA would be on the side of NO slaughter since horses are not raised as food. I am thankful for the stay but realistic that this is far from over. 100% support for those who fight against slaughter.

  15. This does not prevent horse slaughter. It merely delays the inevitable and causes a host of other issues as these wonderful animals are carted over the border to be slaughtered. We need to take responsibility for our human-made problem and not just say “goody, we’ve saved the horses”. You certainly have not! Open your eyes and the slaughterhouses, euthanize on our terms. Then, we need to look at the other end of the problem; too much breeding. I would appreciate honest, thoughtful comments.

  16. I am praying that we can stop this forever. Im thankful for any amount of time mass killing of equine is not allowed to happen. It is a nasty , vile business – full of nasty, vile people and if its coming to your state, your town then you will see, feel and smell its evilness! Wait until your child asked about all those trucks filled with scared horses! Y’all will see buzzards flying for all to see. Seems horrible for tourism and your citizens
