by Carol Walker, Director of Field Documentation, Wild Horse Freedom Federation
I had the best news today.
On Friday I got an email from Terry Fitch, Co-Founder of Wild Horse Freedom Federation. Someone had written to the WHFF tip section of the website. It was Brad Langley, working south of Rock Springs in Wyoming’s Red Desert. He had found an orphan foal, with no horses around for miles and nowhere in sight, and he did not know who to call or what to do. He said that the foal ran after his truck. He gave directions and GPS coordinates, and the foal was near the Eversole Ranch, where the harrowing last days of the Salt Wells Creek and Adobe Town roundup took place. I immediately emailed him that he needed to contact Jay D’Ewart, Wild Horse and Burro Specialist, and gave him Jay’s cell phone number so he would have the best chance of catching him immediately. We did not know how long the foal could hold out without its mother.
(Before – all alone)
I thought on Saturday all was well until I received another email from Brad, that the number was disconnected. Of course BLM offices are closed on the weekend but I emailed and called the office number for Jay, and tried texting him. The text seemed to go through so I reported back to Terry and Brad that I would let them know if I heard anything, and they said the same. Brad had gone into the same area with his wife that day trying to find the foal again, with no luck, and sent directions again.
I really was thinking that it was unlikely that the foal would make it through the weekend, but to my utter delight I got a message from Jay D’Ewart this afternoon. Apparently wranglers went out on horseback Friday to find the foal with no luck, but on Saturday, Marvin, who works in the oil and gas fields found the foal and took him home.
(Foal napping)
Apparently he and his wife Tiffaney have filed papers at Rock Springs BLM to foster the foal, and he spent the weekend in their subdivision – he seems quite at home there! He has been drinking milk replacer right out of a bucket, and the vet said he was 1 month old. They will be moving him to a new corral soon, and are thinking of a name. They said he will have a very good home.
(Foal in the kitchen)
It is wonderful to hear about a happy ending for one of the Adobe Town horses in the aftermath of the roundup.

A great story with a happy ending, the foal was meant to survive.

Imagine what his mother is going through though, imagine what this foal went through being left behind all alone. Nice this foal was saved but overall this is just heartbreaking.

Could not agree with you more. Everyone acting the hero. But the despair this baby felt, the dam being driven from her foal. No dam would leave her foal behind. I’m outraged. Something happenened out there, that no one wanted anyone to know of. Good thing the worker wasn’t part of the crap but maybe he knew the operation was cruel hearted and that was why he contacted WHFF. He is the real hero.
And did anyone else see the complete sanded landscape behind the foal?

I call bull#*it that the pilot didn’t know he left a baby behind. This is so symbolic of this management – nothing left for the next generation. Sure, real manly to go rescue the sad youngster – but what of his heart, his bond with his family? What of the hearts of them all? The only comfort I feel is he is alive.

While it’s very good news that the foal was found and will have a good home, this just points out how cruel, inhumane and evil these roundups are. Oh, and completely unnecessary. The poor mother must be suffering greatly in her grief. What the hell is wrong with these ranchers, energy companies, the BLM and all others who want to remove all the wild horses and burros. Are they really that greedy? The ranchers talk about preserving their way of life that they have been living for decades, but the horses have been there just as long (actually longer). What about preserving the horses’ way of life? You know, just because you can do something doesn’t necessarily mean that you should. Man has the power to do a lot of things that are morally wrong and ethically corrupt. How about making an effort to live in harmony with what God has made. The world would be a whole lot better place, right? (That little foal has almost the exact same coloring as my little Arabian. It breaks my heart that he was torn from his mother and all alone. How frightened he must have been.)

Moving him to a new corral? How about taking him to wherever they have taken the wet mares and walk him up and down the fence!!! Really? This is stupid and ignorant and for a BLM manager – incompetent and he needs to lose his job!

I agree that it would be wonderful for him to be reunited with his mother, but what would be the final fate of him then? He would be separated from her again as a yearling and put up for adoption, and if that didn’t happen, might eventually be sold to a kill buyer. It’s really a no-win situation, and just breaks my heart for the poor baby and momma, and all of the other wild ones removed from their rightful lands. Damn Bureau of Livestock Management and their bedfellows the cattle ranchers!

He is too young to be away from his mother. If he were to die next week, at least it would be in her company with her warm breath on him.

I think they have dispersed most of the mares to other places already, and surely they have dried up by now, sadly. Hardest of all to realize the chopper pilot surely saw a foal falling behind and left it to die unnoticed and unremarked.

Marvin and Tiffany have the foal not the BLM. We know them personally and the foal has been living in their home with almost daily visits from the vet to check on weight gain and overall health. They are wanting the foal to become stronger before they take him to their horse corrals and barn to be around other horses not to the BLM corrals.

The people who have fostered the foal went to the BLM to fill out all the correct paperwork. Although it is possible that this foal would have been left with his mother had he been brought in with her during the roundup, it is also possible he would have been separated from her – it does happen during the bringing in and sorting, so he is in the best possible place right now with a new loving home. Of course NONE of these horses in Adobe Town and Salt Wells Creek should have been rounded up, and if they had not been, he would still be with his mother.

It’s miracle that the colt was found safe and will have a happy home, for that I’m grateful. But, the cruel fact is, there’s a mare out their desperately missing her foal. And, while, this little guy is “going well”:, he’s desperately missing his momma and let’s face it he really needs his mother. Are there any video tapes of the roundup, that could possibly identify that mare?

Even dogs don’t leave their others until they are at least 6 weeks old, now it is 8 if peopole are up on their science. Every effort should be made to get this baby back with its dam. This is a protected horse. Please try not to treat them like domestic livestock.

I just went on the Humane Society’s site for their Animal Protection Voter Guide and Humane Scorecard. These give information of their recommendations for animal humane politicians in every state, and the voting record on animal issues of every politician in every state. It might not be the perfect answer for knowing who to vote for, but at least it’s a place to start. There is also a link for finding and contacting your representatives, both state and federal, and a letter to sign and send to your representatives regarding supporting the SAFE Act. Let your politicians know that you will be voting humane, regardless of party affiliation.

The trauma inflicted to this young horse is unimaginable. Such an incident ongoing o the lack of “reform” and better SOP. Touching deeply, yet reflecting the same old cruelty that is not picked up to showcase by animal welfare powerhouses such as HSUS who milks donors with dog campaigns mostly. This traumatic event caused by government tactics is the norm that HSUS and others claiming to “help” turn a blind eye to. Why ? Is it business relations… that hinder the honest effort to fight this type of horrible abuse ? Bless this foal and its rescuers and damn those who pretend they care while deliberately choosing to look the other way.
