Calls Needed, TODAY!
| The House Judiciary Committee‘s Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security has just announced that it will hold a hearing on H.R. 503, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, on Tuesday, February 2, at 4:00 p.m. This bill, sponsored by full Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) and cosponsored by a majority of the Committee, is identical to legislation overwhelmingly approved by the same Committee last year.
During the past year, pro-horse-slaughter advocates and organizations have stepped up their misinformation campaign. Instead of working to help improve the welfare of horses, they have been distorting information and using unsubstantiated claims to justify horse slaughter. Unfortunately, a few organizations continue to block this responsible and humane legislation, thus prolonging the unnecessary suffering of approximately 100,000 horses per year. Horse owners, veterinarians and animal welfare advocates must continue to fight for America’s horses and push toward the passage of H.R. 503, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Please ask your Representative to cosponsor H.R. 503, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act. To find contact information and cosponsorship status for your Representative, visit the Compassion Index at http://www.compassionindex.org. Be sure to call and thank your Representative if he/she is already among the 178 current cosponsors of this bill. Most importantly, check the list below; if your Representative is a member of the Judiciary Committee, it is especially important that he/she hear from you right away. In addition to the message about cosponsorship, please also ask him/her to support the bill in committee should it come up for a vote. For additional information on H.R. 503 and other animal protection issues, visit our website at www.awionline.org. Thank you for your help! We hope you will share our “Dear Humanitarian” eAlert with family, friends and coworkers (post it on Facebook and tweet it on Twitter as well), and encourage them to contact their legislators. When contacting members of Congress, please respectfully request a response from them on the issue(s) so that you, as a constituent, will know their position. As always, thank you very much for your help. Sincerely, |

I just wish one of my Reps was on this list. Or, maybe not, since I don’t like him at all. He said he couldn’t support the ROAM Act because – get this! – “too expensive.” !!!
Just wait until I reply to THAT little comment!

Will this bill prevent the cruelty of the BLM? One little foal shot today after the Calico round up. Seems the round up destroyed his new, little hooves. They ran his feet right off.
I’d say that’s cruel.

This bill will prevent not only the slaughter of our wild horses, but also the slaughter of our domestic horses. That is over 130,000 horses all together. So if you want to save a lot of horses in one pop, go to Washington this week to lobby the members of the committee and let them know your opinion!!This is the most important news that has happened in a looooooong time folks. Call, write, fax, call, write, fax, call, write, fax.

I’ve been searching all day, and I can’t find ANYTHING except at Tuesday’s Horse, and that’s just a footnote that says postponed.

Just got a phone call & email from an aide to Representative Pedro Pierluisi (Puerto Rico). He’s a co-sponsor of the bill, and on the subcommittee.
The hearing was postponed due to scheduling issues. No new date as yet, but the aide said it shouldn’t be too long, since, to the best of his understanding, it was scheduling and nothing else. We’ll see.
At least I now have a contact who seems willing to keep in touch. Again, we’ll see.

I’ve sent this to the U.S. House Representative for my district. He isn’t on the Subcommittee, but has always been very good getting back to me. I tried to send to all subcommittee members and got a few through, but some won’t accept unless you’re in their district. If you are a constituent or know someone who is, the contacts should go through.
This is the direct link to the Subcommittee page so you can check the members:

Please let me know if you think my email is off base. I tried to make it short and respectful.
Dear Representative Lujan,
I would like to know if the February 2nd Hearing on H.R. 503 by the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and National Security has been postponed. If it has been postponed, I would like to know why and to what date.
As a supporter of protections for American horses, prompt action on this bill is very important to me and to many others across the country. Please reply by email, as I want to have correct information on this hearing as soon as possible.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Linda Horn
