HOUSTON, (Horseback) – The record death toll for a federal Bureau of Land Management roundup has again risen with the demise of two more horses raising the count to 115. Specifically, 69 have died at the agency’s Fallon holding facility, 7 died at the site of the Caico roundup itself, and there have been 39 miscarried foals.

The animals are under the care of BLM veterinarian Dr. Richard Sanford. Horseback Magazine asked for his vitae under the U.S, Freedom of Information Act. In a certified letter to the magazine dated March 9, 2010, the agency responded.

“We have conducted a thorough search of our files and were unable to locate any records responsive to your request.”

Sanford is the second BLM veterinarian who appears to have no credentials on file with the bureau. Dr. Albert Kane, who has worked on the Calico “gather” is not licensed as a veterinarian in Nevada according to state records. Sanford holds a Nevada vet license.

According to a physician, veterinarian, and emergency medical technician contacted by Horseback Magazine, virtually all medical professionals have credentials on file where they are employed and carry them as well.

These same professionals have raised questions regarding moving wild horses from a sparse diet of desert grass to one of rich hay as soon as they were captured. They have raised questions that the Calico tragedies are the result of gastrointestinal problems such as colic.

  1. I hope that the sacrifice that these horses have made will bear fruit in bringing these “people” to justice and being held accountable for their barbaric actions in this whole sickening episode. It is for those horses that we have to keep up the fight!!!

  2. This is striking a cord.
    Reminiscent of Sheldon (June 2006) and Jackson Mt.-Palomino Valley (Aug. 2007) abuse, deaths…slaughter.
    Wonder what we do not know?
    Calico is a massacre. And the BLM onto the next, even more massive roundup.
    Most definitely the BLM is all-out to eliminate all the wild horses, by any means.

    Never forget the uncovered BLM “Secret Documents,” FOIA, June 2009.

    To refresh memory go to: http://conquistadorprogram.org/

    Click at top: “BLM & court documents on wild horses,” and/or scroll down to right of page and click where says June 6, 2009.

    Detailed plans to completely eliminate the wild horses. One way or another they are attempting to do so. And will not stop until a court order or Presidential restraint.

    What does the BLM care if there are injured, “sickly,” just-not-right horses and one or two unqualified vets for over 1,000 horses.

    We will never know the truth as to what is going on as observers are minimally allowed. Years later we may learn of more horror.

    Thank you Mr. Long and R.T. Fitch for keeping on this. Bless you.

    • I never did buy that ALL those horses died from hyperlipemia. Sure, it’s possible I guess, but I would expect colic to come first, and, it not treated, progress to the more serious disorder. I know a bit about hyperlipemia because when my QH/pony mare foundered some years ago, my vet was worried about her developing hyperlipemia because she wasn’t eating and ponies are more prone to it than horses. Even though she was VERY ill, and ate very little for several days, she did NOT develop hyperlipemia. It’s not something that happens all THAT often.

      Just sayin’…

  3. You don’t need to be a licensed vet to know you don’t radically change a horses diet. They would have been better off with no food at all initially. Plenty of water (even if Cattoor doesn’t think so) and then a slowly introducing hay. Horses tend to be nervous eaters, grazing gives them a sense of security and normalcy. On the range they can pick and choose WHAT AND WHEN they want to eat, in BLM prisons they don’t have anything else to do but eat.

  4. BLM Fallon Update: “One 25 year old stallion was euthanized due to poor condition from a result of tooth loss”. They shoot horses for this? I read there is special feed for such horses. Why did they kill him?

  5. hello; yeah they do not use Hay Cubes(mositened with water: or Hay pellets; they do not acutally feed the horses the “long stemmed Alfalfa forage; but they use:
    “Orchard and Rye Grass Clippings to the horses for the first 2-4 weeks @ Fallon;

    the Orchard and Rye Grass Clippings are a VERY poor source of Nutrtion compared to THE NINE DIF. TYPES OF WILD NATIVES GRASSES; STRAW AND HAY IN THE NEVADA RANGELAND;(source Craig Downer identifies nine dif. types of Native Nevada Grass Species; IF the BLM was smart; which obviously they are not: The BLM would do this: The BLM would go out to the range and “MOW AND BALE ABOUT 20 ACRES OF WILD NEVADA GRASS;

    Then they would initially FEED THE NATIVE BALED GRASS to the Mustangs @ Fallon; slowly making a transition; but hear me out when I say to you; Orchard Grass and Rye Grass IN NO WAY MIMICS THE NATIVE GRASSES OF NEVADA; this is why the Mustangs get colic and perish; (or are shot !); the BLM gives them the wrong type of Hay..

  6. Who here cares about other animals that use range and water resources? I understand the position you all are taking, but it is completely one sided. There is no voice out there that is defending mule deer, elk, antelope, and other wildlife that are often chased away from springs by feral horses. I don’t understand why horses take presidence over other wildlife. In light of this, does anyone have any productive ideas? I don’t think the emploees of the BLM as a whole deserve the demonization perpetuated here nor do I think there is some secret conspiracy to abuse horses.

    There seems to be knowledge here in regards to horses. Why don’t you help the BLM to deal with feral horses is a way that takes into the consideration the facts that they reproduce at range coonditions that are well below carrying capacity of other wildlife. Other wildlife suffer too. Why do horses matter more?

    • EVERYBODY hear cares about ALL wildlife! IF the BLM (or anyone else for that matter) was running down deer, elk and antelope with helicopters we would be hollering about that, too. Oh come to think of it, some people are running down wolves with helicopters! Believe you me people on this blog are out there in cyber-land calling for a stop to that massacre, too!

      Wade you said: “… does anyone have any productive ideas? ” We all have “ideas”, NO ONE of any importance is listening!!!!!!!!!! This makes us VERY mad and disillusioned with this whole process.

      The BLM needs to STOP THE ROUND-UPS, stop stockpiling horses in taxpayer funded holding facilities until a comprehensive, cost effective, humane plan is put in to place!!!!!!!!!
      SHEEZ! How many time do we have to say that! Get a clue!

    • Deer,antelope and elk can JUMP the 7 thousand miles of barbed wire fence the blm has placed. Most of the wild horses can’t.
