Update: Rescued Virginia Range Wild Horses Finding Homes

information supplied by Willis Lamm

“Sandy” finds a Special Home

Samantha and Sandy

The following link provides a more complete picture of the rescue of the “South Reno 30.”

Also, Samantha Szesciorka has adopted the mare known as “Sandy” to train and take with her on her cross-Nevada “Nevada Discovery Ride” next year.

Here is a photo of Samantha getting her “first touch” with Sandy over the weekend.  Although Sandy is definitely a wild horse, she has a very level headed disposition and within minutes she was accepting the beginnings of being handled by humans within the confines of a corral.

We anticipate reading about Samantha’s and Sandy’s successes over the next few months.  Meanwhile Hidden Valley and its allies have a large number of horses to place with suitable adopters or in appropriate sanctuaries.  Anyone who would like to adopt one of these historic horses or who is aware of placement opportunities should contact Hidden Valley.

  2. A tear just came to my eye. When I see Sandy, ears pointed somewhat apprehensively, beginning to accept her new role in the world. Obviously Samantha has a kind spirit and gentle touch. I do believe this will be the start of a beautiful relationship.

  3. Sorry I don’t agree with everyone’s happy party. Yeah, okay, it’s great that she isn’t being slaughtered; and has a good forever home; but that horse looked so beautiful in her real home. She is wild and wild she should have stayed. Even if we adopt all the Mustangs is that the solution? What happened to the wild free Mustangs. I wonder how Sandy feels about her new life. I think there is Disney animated movie that answers that question.

Samantha, please don’t take this personally. I honor you for what you are doing; but I wonder if this is the end of the Wild Mustangs and their relationship with the earth and other animals in the wild. Losing them all will screw with the delicate balance of their ecosystem.

So glad Sandy is not going to slaughter. So sad that she is no longer Free Wild Mustang.

    • Jag, speaking for myself our stance has always been to keep, protect and manage the horses ON the range not off. But despite public outcry the Nevada Dept. of Ag when in and pulled the horses off and being that they are NOT BLM horses they could go directly to auction. These advocates did all they could to save them.

The bigger story is the world wide response to save these horses, it was global and the reaction from those who donated speaks volumes as to the solidarity and commitment that good folks in the advocacy share.

The horses need to be on the range with their families and free…but saving them from the slaughterhouse, in this fashion, is still a happy story regardless of how you look at it.

      • Should be free but alive and cared for is acceptable in my book too. Far better than what the government is doing to them…cows are not horses and should never replace them on the range..darned android cut me off…

  4. I think the government needs to have land for the wild horses and protected from poachers, horse thieves, and those that would do harm to them. They were here and ran free long before the settlers came. We should be protecting the wild animals and not giving them to slaughter. They have a right to be free, which is what GOD wants. I am thankful there are people that are taking them to their land, but they are not wild and FREE!!
