R.T. Fitch Comes Clean and Confesses to Earning a Living

original art work by Kerry Kelly

Yup, it’s time to fess up and clear the air, folks, as rumors have been flying and if I am nothing else I am a man of my word.  So there is no need to dawdle and with a Wrangler Iced Tea sitting on my desk beside my keyboard I am going to step fully into the light, bereft of any exterior tapestry and bare my soul to the world…drum roll please:

“I have a job.”

Phew, it’s good to finally get that off my chest; you just have no idea how wearing it has been on my nerves, over the years, keeping the private portion of my life secret.

I am guilty on so many counts that I don’t know if they all can possibly be listed here but I will give it my best.  If I am going to come clean I may as well do it all the way…so here goes, I just hope that you will still respect me in the morning.

R.T. Fitch has been guilty of:

  • supporting his wife and rescued animal companions in a manner in which they have become accustomed to for years, i.e. spoiled
  • being legally married and carries his appropriate name
  • transparently paying all required Federal, State and local taxes
  • annually and consistently donating a significant portion of his earnings to support legitimate non-profit animal related organizations
  • spending large portions of his legitimate income to fund all travels and expenses (both he and his wife) related to equine advocacy and has never taken a dime from others to cover such expenses
  • being personally liable and in debt to the tune of six figures for funding legal actions that have made a significant impact in protecting the equines of the United States
  • donating the proceeds of his current book to a legitimate non-profit animal related organization
  • working for an American energy company that is NOT involved in pushing wild equines off from their rightful public lands
  • allowing his employer to match his donations to legitimate non-profit animal related organizations
  • allowing his employer to donate grant money to legitimate non-profit animal related organizations when he donates 40 hours of personal time to legitimate non-profit animal related organizations
  • being a degreed Health, Environment and Safety professional that has spent decades ensuring that his employer’s employees and contractors go home in the same health and good shape that they came to work with and that they safe guarded the environment while they conducted their business
  • formerly working in multiple overseas locations at the risk of his own personal safety and health in an effort to diminish and reduce environmental risks and potential damage to ensure the longevity of life upon the planet
  • currently working in China in collaboration with the Chinese government in an effort to assist them in kicking their polluting habit of burning coal and to convert dangerous gas into an energy source that will be a clean and natural form of energy which will relieve their deadly and toxic air pollution problem
  • being away from his wife, herd, friends and allies way too much in attempting to accomplishing the above
  • loving his wife, herd, friends and allies
  • having occasional problems of keeping his horses between him and the ground
  • longing to retire from official work and hopes to win the final equine battle so that he and Jerry Finch can sit under a pecan tree and drink Wrangler Iced Teas into the night without feeling guilty (while they still have the faculties to remember the correct recipe for the tea)
  • giving a crap!!!!

There it is folks, in a nutshell, how a simple minded military medic turned into a college educated HES professional who spends all of his spare time and much of his personal earned income in trying to do what is right for the horses.  I am sorry and hope that you can forgive me but in my heart of hearts I was thinking that I was headed in the right direction.

The skeletons are now cleaned out of the closet, the Darkside has been disarmed and I am standing before you naked (scary thought) waiting for my punishment. (I have lost some weight, you know)

Doing the right thing is often times painful, but I do enjoy a good fight.

May the Force of the Horse© be with us.

(Have a happy ‘Feel Good Sunday’)

    • I had to chuckle as I read your blog/ confession of work. All except traveling the world and currently working in China I relate to. Been running a small rescue while working. taking care of wife and children as well as cleaning (meaning roll up the sleeves cleaning) of the neighborhoods and blighted properties in several counties around me has been an experience that I will not soon forget. Currently trying to take our rescue full circle and become 100 percent legit. What started as a place to bring in animals from foreclosed properties quickly became larger animals . livestock and every animal left at a house / farm. Heck I was always surprised not to find an elephant or Giraffe in some of the farms we cleaned after people moved away. Thanks for sharing!

    • And may someone come up with a way to CLONE the true-hearted, high-charactered people such as you and your wife, so that the rest of us, who also try hard to do right by one of God’s greatest gifts to the earth and humanity–THE HORSE, can have a little less stress in our daily lives and die in peace, knowing others will carry on the battle to keep these innocent creatures from the evil inflicted upon them BY FAR TOO MANY SO-CALLED HUMANS!

You have my gratitude, my respect and my prayers…especially my prayers!

  1. I always love the people who spend their time and money on the rescue of our beloved horse’s. It does make me wonder though about the rescues who do not hold a “real” job outside the rescue. Is the money I donate helping them or the rescue horses? Yea I would love to stay at home and take care of my horse’s while someone else supports me. So thanks for coming clean and telling the truth.

It is apparent to me that you have earned your wings in heaven…..love love people like you, dislike people that abuse and torture innocents…..keep up the great work. So thankful that my cousin Jim Carlton with the Wall Street Journal did a piece on you. If I had not read the article in length would have never found you. 6. R.T. you have to earn an honest living to feed your family. You are the Saint for the wild horses and burros. Thank you for helping the horses that need you the most. The geneal public need to know what is happening to the wild horse and burros. You and your organizations give us the facts. Thank you.

    • Alright…I was holding out for a marketing agreement but that would fall back into the making a legitimate living thing again so I will donate it to you fine folks and be happy knowing that we are relaxing together.

1.) Equal parts diet iced tea and vodka. (This is critical as your intent and environment will drive this first step. Explanation: Community Diet Iced Tea is my first regional and public choice which has received a big thumbs up across southeast Texas and Louisiana BUT, I have also found Arizona Diet Green Tea with Gingsing to be a reasonable subsatute when romance is in the air. Also, the selection of vodka is equally important…hard working afternoon on the tractor and something refreshing in mind…cheap stuff works, but if you aim to impress I would recommend several of our Texas acclaimed vodkas like “Titos” or “Dripping Springs”. They make a smooth and eloquent drink.)

2.) A dash of lemon juice.

3.). And the secret ingredient, a dash of Tabasco sauce, this supercharges metabolisum and tips a hat to the human libido…flavor to taste.

This drink of the Gods has kept me young, spry, amiable and at least attractive to Terry but I must confess that it has done nothing to ward off baldness…still working on that.

Enjoy your Sunday afternoon and cherish the ones that you love because it is going to get ugly, tomorrow, trust me. 🐴

  8. Finally came clean huh? I imagine that the psa connection will be sorely disappointed to hear that..maybe they’ll all collectively jump off a bridge? (dirty, wishful thinking). Boy, and i thought you were some sort of super hero..lol You’re just a simple working person just like me (and so many others) who is horse crazy and trying to find a way to retire. I’m non profit but i am not signed onto the non profit status so i support what i have and all 18 of them aren’t complaining, all are rescues. I’d love to retire and keep them all. I’m hoping that my company does another alternative work schedule that would help my life tremendously.. And somebody needs to hit Ford up for assistance again to assist the mustangs. After all, they promote their car using the name….mustang. Anyway, congratulations fit being one of us, an everyday people.. So that’s what you’re doing in China… Blessings on you and yours.

  9. And here I was thinking you worked for the CIA 🙂 That was the times when I wasn’t thinking that you had somehow cloned yourself at birth and that there was one of you that advocated for the horses and spoiled Terry and the other went out into the world to make that pocket change.

Odd thing: Salazar wears an enormous white hat and his is chock full of evil, RT wears a black hat and is one heck of a decent, caring, honorable man. I would say that even when he chose his wardrobe Salazar was trying too hard to convince us he is what he really isn’t-an honest man of morals. Funny how your base character shows up in even such small things as your wardrobe choices.

  10. It’s your darned HONESTY that is so disarming, R.T. — it clears the air here, and I hope does the same in China.

Love everything written here, by you and all commenters.

Gotta put in a plug for talented illustrator Kerry Kelly. She sure knows how to make you look like the “decent, caring, honorable”* angel you are (better black hat and shades than the deceptively white Salazar!**). And she draws one beautiful, batting-her-eyes equine swooning over her human (who “loves … his herd”!***)

  11. The horse advocates love your work. Thanks for all you do!
I, too, devote much of my spare time to promoting wild horse welfare and awareness of their plight for survival. It is something some of us just have to do. There are times in your life that you choose a side to be on and this is the right side. I will be on it my whole life. I hope I can make a dent in the cruel side of the horse’s use by mankind.

    • I just finished watching this documentary and it is by far the most moving and wonderful video on the horse-human bond that I’ve ever seen. I’ve sent the link to friends around the world who long to learn this profound way of expressing love for a horse — and of being loved by a horse in return. Thank you so much for posting this link, Denise.

    • Incredible, what a fantastic learning experience. Our horses teach us. This was so worth while watching. I have my 3 1/2 year old Freedom coming and I will let him teach me, listen to him. He will tell me. Thank you so much. Every person who has horses and trains horses should see this. Great experience. I connected with love and light from the heart. Thank you for creating this experience for us. Love and God Bless our horses. They are Master teachers.

Just makes your family that much more awesome knowing how hard you and Terry work to keep everything running while working for a better future for all the horses across America as if it were your primary job! There is much I would not know about nor understand had it not been for WHFF. I sure do appreciate everything I’ve learned! Too bad that wrangler tea recipe couldn’t become a fundraiser… I’ll bet it’d be good with an old fashioned pie recipe. Thanks so much to everyone at WHFF! Have a wonderful Sunday!

  15. A Straight up good guy in a white hat! We need many, many more like you. There are too many people making money off of these already compromised animals by either disseminating emotional content regarding their plight, with a donation button on their page, and that donation ends up lining their personal pockets, instead of saving the animals, legal funds, witness costs, etc. The massive Egos that I have experienced in groups (that should be making the animals the number 1 priority) instead becomes contentious, cruel and weakens the movement entirely. I do believe that most folks are doing this hard, heart breaking work for the animals. The people that are defrauding good folks on a daily basis using an emotionally charged plea to fleece people from their hard earned money is something that I do not and will not support . It is very hard to determine who to trust and follow. Glad to know that your entire being is devoted to saving them. Bravo RT and Terri, Bravo and congrats on your wedding anniversary!

  16. It’s the pecan tree where I’m suppose to meet you? Dang, I’m sitting under the oak tree and don’t know any of these cowboys. The pecan tree is at least six miles south and ol’ Pete just ain’t up to riding that far today. Probably just as well that you aren’t here. Remember last time when you snuck behind all that brush and started making those “cow in distress” sounds and when the cowboys started down the hill to find out what was wrong you changed it to the “really pissed off bull” sounds? The way they started running backwards with one of them screamed like a little girl….
Wait, this article is about the good you, isn’t it? Never mind.

I know for sure you are a hero to those of us who follow your blog.

  18. Let me start off saying I am a negative person. Why becasue what I am going to say is extremely negative. I have been following your story on the wild horses, plans to start up horse slaughter plants again, the possiblity of selling horse meat in local supermarkets and still hearing horses are still being set over to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered. I am so sick of hearing this! I feel like nothing has changed! In someways things have gottan worse! This fight is just getting started and I hope by this time next year things will be better for horses all over the world!!!!

  20. Our heroes and all horse advocates believe in your strength and force of the horse. In a nut shell, you are incredible and I stand by you, continue to fight for the preservation of our horses freedom to roam. We believe in the truth, have a deep abiding faith we can make that glorious difference when the cards fall. I can’t wait until that day we can sit all together and have Iced tea together. Think of a job well done my friends. I will not rest until that day when our horses are protected from the depths of hellish experiences that the BLM has managed to create. The stock pile of endless corruption many have placed upon our wild Equines just asking to survive in a free world.
We have many jobs to do and I am so glad you and Terry are part of a wonderful, astounding group who cares from the inner souls of one’s heart. You care and we can see this clearly. So lets go make that money and bring our beloved Equines back to their homes on the ranges. We must and we will make our impact. I will not ever stop in this huge fight for freedom. Our Country does not want Socialism. We desire to speak, believe and have independent thinking to make our own minds on what is right for our Country. NO SOCIALISM HERE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, NEVER. EVER. NO FABIAN SOCIALISM HERE. LOOK OUT FOR THE WOLF DRESSED IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING. NO TURNING BACK EVER. WE MUST FIGHT FOR OUR VALUES AND OR FREEDOM, READ MY WORDS LOUD AND CLEAR.

Yes, R.T., maybe you can help Yao Ming (who you have an instant “in” with, seeing as how he played basketball in YOUR city) do a promo for saving horses (or at least wild horses), like the ones he’s already done for rhinos and elephants in Africa and sharks in the oceans everywhere: http://yaomingblog.com

Sounds delightful, I do love vodka although I’m usually rushing and just crack open a nice ready made twisted tea… Half and half being a favorite. It goes with everything. I will admit to wondering just what it was that you did in China all the time, RT, now we know. Shocking!!!! LOL And here I thought you must just make millions rescuing horses and advocating for the mustangs and burros and that you simply enjoyed spending your fortune in China. Once again, truth is stranger than fiction, huh? Work… ?? Interesting…. 😉
