Horsemeat scandal has had a huge impact on people’s attitude to processed food, a survey claims
Nearly 18 million packets of processed food were thrown away by families in Britain after the horsemeat scandal, according to a survey.
More than 13,500 tons of items like sausages, burgers and meat pies were chucked in the bin, the research for kitchenware manufacturer Tefal found.
The firm says it believes this shows that the recent scandals have had a positive effect on the nation’s eating habits, with Britons becoming more aware of the health risks of eating too many processed ready meals.
Almost a quarter (24%) of the 2007 UK adults questioned by ICM said they had cut down on the amount of processed food they eat.
Nearly a third (30%) of respondents said they were put off processed meals as a result of the horsemeat scandal.
The number who said they had thrown out processed ready meals like lasagnes and curries was just under 2.8 million.
The survey also found that people are eating around 20% more British apples, garden peas, cauliflower and cabbage.
The research was to start Tefal’s Fresh Week, an initiative to encourage the UK to exchange convenience and ready-made meals for fresh unprocessed food.

You’re so right, which is why it’s more important now than ever to support H.R. 1094 the Safeguard American Food Exports Act of 2013. The safety for the health of our citizens, as well as ending the brutal slaughtering of our equines is imperative. Horses are not fit for human consumption and should not be in the food chain here in America, or elsewhere. Those responsible for jeopordizing the health of unsuspecting innocent people must be held accountable, Because of all the mis-representation, it can and possibly will create a negative effect to the food industry.

I am a fitness/wellness professional. It has been known for sometime now that processed foods are loaded with unhealthy additives. Who knew we could add to that “tainted” horse meat. It has been argued that humans are carnivores when in fact, humans are omnivores. An omnivore’s diet is 99% vegan. People eat way too much meat and processed foods. We need to look at the whole picture here and hold accountable people that corrupt and compromise our food supply with “tainted” and GMO products. Peru just made labeling GMO-type food a requirement. Like Britain, we need to continue to educate and encourage other countries to take food safety and our health much more seriously and to have stricter regulations and penalties in place.

Some Americas are lazy and do not want to prepare food. They rather have the microwave dinners. Burger King, McDonalds, Wendys’, Taco Bell and all of the other fast food restaurants that serve beef, is it really beef you are eatting. You never know what you are really getting in fast foods. I used to trust the USDA but now, who do we trust?

From what BBC news Science & Environment said today was that the FSA (Food Standards Agency) explored the idea of testing all horses slaughtered in the UK months before the horsemeat food crisis began in January. But the agency was concerned that the costs of extra testing would cause every horse abattoir to close down. Without faster testing, it is likely that meat tainted with phenylbutazone continued to enter the food chain. The agency says the testing was delayed to allow a comprehensive review of all the impacts. They went on to discuss fraudulent passports. It also went on to say that 6% of horse meat tested came back positive for Bute which meant that hundreds of carcasses were getting into the food chain. It took two weeks for the tests to come back. It is a good article about two pages long its worth reading. I think they are going to crack down on the passports but I’m taking a wait and see about what the EU does in Canada and Mexico.

The way things are going in this country, we probably eat horsemeat too without knowing it.

“If Slaughterhouses had Glass walls, We would all be Vegetarians”, says Paul McCartney.
I just looked at a “state-of-the-art” abattoir in Egypt where Australian Brahman steers are shipped live and slaughtered. It was brutal. They torture these animals, slash the tendons in their legs, stab them in the eyes, and cut their throats hoisting them live, bleeding, bellowing, kicking and squirming. I say this only to prove there is no such thing as humane slaughter – not even of the placid cow.
The scandals and the awareness may well begin a worldwide movement toward vegetarianism. I hope so.
