An update from Equine Welfare Alliance:
None of the animal welfare amendments were allowed. We urge you to contact your representatives and ask them to vote NO on the farm bill. As long as the bill contains the language from the King Amendment, they should not support the bill as it stands.
Wayne Pacelle wrote a concise account of what happened:

CAlling, faxing, emailing, tweeting and posting my disappointment and begging Rokita to Vote NO… he always says he WON’t support things that I ask him to because he states it takes away the state’s power to determine for themselves… the King Amendment DOES that too!! So using his words against him!!

I don’t know, Nazi germany progressed because of the ability of the average citizen to ignore what was happening around them and go on with their daily activities……Let’s spread the word far and wide and hope people will wake up before they find dog and cat in the grocery store here as well.

I made calls this afternoon. I just can’t believe how sneaky and deceitful they are in Washington. Thank you Wayne Parcell for letting us know the actual facts on the going on in Washington. You just can’t keep up with the deception and lies.

I just called. But I live in a Democratic state. where i can count on my Congressmen to do the right thing. This House is controlled by fascists, and even though I expect my own Cogressman to vote against this bill, it will surely pass the House. The only hope is for the Senate to vote it down. I’m disgusted with this Congress on many issues, including this one.

Like others I called, faxed, tweeted, emailed twice. I will be calling again this afternoon as I have an aide checking on Vargas’ stance on animal related issues. Never think that others are making the calls etc and that you don’t have to. When I call I usually ask if they are getting other calls on this issue. Even when it has been real crunch time and every one should be calling I have been told they are only getting a few calls. Your call counts, make it.

Here is the update!: House Votes Down Farm Bill
UPDATE: On June 20, by a vote of 195 to 234 the House rejected the Farm Bill. This is good news for animal advocates since the Farm Bill contained the overly broad and dangerous King Amendment. The language in the King amendment is so broad that it could repeal state laws on farm animal confinement, horse slaughter, puppy mills, shark finning, and a wide range of other concerns from food safety to child labor to the environment.
Thank you to everyone who contacted their U.S. Representative. We can now turn our attention back to the important issues that we hoped the Farm Bill would address but didn’t:
The Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act – legislation that would amend the Horse Protection Act to end the industry’s failed system of self-policing, ban the use of devices implicated in the practice of soring, strengthen penalties, and make other reforms needed to finally end this torturous practice.
The Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act – legislation that will protect consumers from toxic horsemeat and end the cruel slaughter of America’s horses as well as their export for slaughter abroad.
The Egg Products Inspection Act Amendments of 2013 – legislation that will improve the lives of 280 million egg-laying hens in our nation.

Rep. Young – The manager’s amendment makes technical and non-controversial changes to the bill and report. The amendment was adopted on a voice vote.
