Calgary songstress Jann Arden is adding her voice to the list of opponents of a wild horse capture plan.
The Juno award-winning artist joined Olds rancher Darrell Glover in his airplane Sunday, along with veterinarian Dr. Judith Samson-French, to stage their own recount of the wild horse population in the Williams Creek area.
Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development announced it would grant permits for the capture of 200 wild horses to help control the population and lessen the impact on the land.
Opponents have held rallies to voice their concerns about the program, including the worry most of the horses will end up in slaughterhouses.
They also are demanding an official recount of the horses, claiming the numbers cited by the province are skewed.
And though turbulence prevented Glover, Arden, and Samson-French from conducting a proper count from the air Sunday, the singer’s eyes were opened.

They saw about 50 horses.
An animal advocate, Arden said she is now part of the coalition of opponents, which include ranchers, vets and equestrians, who are hoping the government looks instead at contraception as an alternative to trapping, if the population needs controlling.
“As an Albertan, when I see Albertans waving these flags talking about what proud horseman they are and the Calgary Stampeders running a horse up and down every time there is a touchdown, and then we have the Stampede itself and the rodeo and everyone is so proud about our heritage and the horses and to turn around and do this to them, this is our treatment towards them?”
She said the prospect of people trapping horses to slaughter them for money is “new heights of being disgusting.” ESRD has said it will continue to look at contraception as an option and will be going out in March for an annual count of feral horses.
Glover hopes to try another recount in the coming days.

Thanks for posting this. Terrible situation. Permit has already been given and kill buyer has set up round pen and baited it. White spirit is in close proximity with his band. Canadian horse advocates are trying their hearts out. Very very disturbing.

A huge thank you goes out to Jann Arden. It’s when people that are in the “limelight” that the word really gets out as to what is happening and we gain a lot more supporters to this act of atrocity. Then the government is more likely to “hear” us. But here in America we’ve had over 80% of American’s say that we are against taking wild horses off of the land and absolutely are against horse slaughter and the government is still doing everything possible to exterminate them. Obama’s war upon our environment and his efforts to destroy every wild animal is the general attitude that all governments are taking. We all know the reasons as to why and yet they continue to deny it. But we must continue to fight for those we love.

it is absolutely despicable that the Canadian Gov’t is so casually and without any compassion rounding these “Amazing” and beautiful Wild Horses up to be “Slaughtered”…..A throw away society of one of God;s most precious creations. I hope when they lay their heads down of their pillows at night that they have reoccurring nightmares of the barbaric slaughter of all these horses:. When a Gov’t chooses such an action over a solution it is a Gov’t that is lacking the caring and compassion that man should have, shame on all who are allowing this to take place, a black cloud over all of you………

Brenda, I looked at that page and was so disgusted and confused by those comments. The thread was closed so I couldn’t make any comments, . I do have a cd of Jann Arden and thought it was a beautiful record.

Brenda and Michelle: Nothing is new there. On Disqus and other sites for people to make comments on, well over 3/4 , and more, make fun of Jann Arden when she is in the news for any matter. That’s just the way it is.

I applaud her efforts. But please don’t talk about how wonderful the Calgary stampede is. Many horses have lost their lives here or had to be destroyed because of these activities. Again, who is at the end of this gravy train? Which slaughter house is it? Are they predicting we will finally get our safe act passed which will result in no american equines leaving the USA? Hummmm..food for thought???

The Conservative government of Canada has proven without a doubt that animals are just a commodity that they can exploit..This senseless killing has to be stopped for the free roaming wildhorses, the polar bears and the seal hunt…these are precious animals and we have a duty to protect them from a pain filled death..Mother Nature should be the only one allowed to cull .Shame on Our good old boys government…I curse the lot of them.

Foreign countries want the horse meat. our governments are happy to oblige. This is the message sent to me from a Montana representative. And I quote ” Just because Americans do not eat horses doesn’t mean it is wrong for other cultures to eat them”. Needless to say he is not getting my vote. A sick curse will fall on North America in their stampede to greed.

We have asked the government questions and have not got sufficient answers.
We are concerned that NO count has been conducted since ……March of 2013 by ESRD after the flooding and record snow fall. We NEED an official recount!!!
We are concerned that scientific methods of population control are not being considered a viable solution.
We need answers regarding the steering committee and the interests that make decisions. We believe there to be a great conflict of interest here.
I believe we have been fair in the questions we have asked and we have a right to answers!
Our bottom line is…….. STOP THE CULL……… COUNT THE HORSES!!!!!

ok well i thought it was wild horses,the gov. insists that they are feral horses. stupid .hey icy, i saw those two web sites but not before i saw yahoo’s story with obunco standing with the heads of mexico and canada, about pipeline, immigration,and trade,too. it is a global conspiracy .so -now who are we going to talk to and how are we going to get news worthy reporter that ain’t scare of their own shadow,or that don’t want to scratch someones head with their chin while they are standing in a bunch of folks getting a story about some jerks that don’t tell the truth any way!!
