(KAUFMAN, Tex.) In east Texas, horses are a part of the way of life.

“My daughter barrell races, my son ropes, said Felisha Cotton, who lives with her family on a ranch in rural Henderson County, Texas, about an hour southeast of Dallas. “My husband has roped. He’s roped his entire adult life.”

For Cotton and her family, horses are almost part of the family.

“I just enjoy them,” she said. “I’d have 100 of them if I could.”

While revered by many, others value horses for different reasons. Some horses will end up on the dinner table.

“They’re trucked down to Mexico and they’ll be slaughtered for human consumption.”

Marsha (not her real name), is an undercover cruelty investigator for the Equine Welfare Alliance.

“Horse slaughter is one of the biggest cruelty to animals that there is,” she said. “From the transportation to the auctions all the way to the slaughter plant.”

Reports say as many as 170,000 are transported to Mexico and Canada each year for slaughter. The meat is then shipped to Japan and Europe for consumption.

“They don’t really care for these animals that much. It’s just a dollar sign to them, it’s a carcass weight, it’s a pound.”

We followed Marsha on an investigation of a horse buyer’s farm. After shooting some video and leaving, we saw that we were being followed closely.

The horse buyer wasn’t happy we had shot video of his operation and was suspicious of our motives.

I stopped to talk with him and explain my purpose of producing a story on the horse slaughter industry. Showing his mistrust, he called the sheriff’s office to check my credentials…(CONTINUED)

  1. “He said he has top-of-the-line equipment and provides only the best food and shelter to his animals.” If this is true, he shouldn’t be afraid to be open to the Equine WELFARE (NOT Rights!) Alliance.

  2. Horse slaughter has no place in this country. Its destructive to the environment surrounding the plants. Its cruel to the animals sold for this purpose. It appears to me that those owning plant and receiving and living on this money don’t give a rats ass about the humans that consume the tainted meat. I would have asked them if they would and their family eat the meat. They all need to get real jobs. I suppose this guy feels its OK because he more or less provides them with their last supper. He doesn’t give a shit about the mares who arrive in foal (long or short term) who sometimes foal in the process in which case they are are taken from the mare and killed or those that are alive when the mare is slaughtered and also killed. I pray every day that those involved in this blood industry get what they have coming in the end. Our breed associations are just as guilty for supporting slaughter. They don’t seem to care either because what would the trainers, judges, directors and others involved in the associations do. I haven’t heard of one breed association standing up for our magnificent horses ponies and other equines. As a delegate to the Arabian horse association there were a couple of clubs who wrote resolutions in support of our beautiful horses. Each time the resolution was shot down. Ask the president of the american horse council what his thoughts are. Wouldn’t you think he would side with the horses…please think again. Its just shameful that they all see nothing wrong with this blood money. The foreigners laugh at and make fun of Americans because so many people can be bought. I lost my beautiful and talented Arabian gelding about two weeks ago and there doesn’t seem to be a let up in the number of foals and youngsters available. I’m sure if some of these small breeders were present in the process from start to finish they would rethink the breeding process. One out of 30,000 thoroughbreds is only capable of reaching the Kentucky derby and the triple crown. Hummmm, what happens to the other 29,000? The horse I lost was very special to me, but I can’t believe the number of unbroken horses on the market. So who is responsible here? As a horse warrior, I ask those I who breed their horses why in this economy? I think that you shouldn’t breed your horse unless you have a buyer before its even born. I know a gal who has breed her made three times trying for a filly. Three times now the mare has had colts. I told her to just find a filly with those bloodlines. The fees involved would over and above pay for the cost of the purchase. The colts had some training, but again were sold at a minimal price or given away to what was termed a good home. The low life “killer buyers” are the end result. We had better get the “safe act” as soon as possibe passed because there is no let up in the kick back money coming from these foreign companies, it’s all a gravy train!

  6. It’s imperative that WE THE PEOPLE get the S.A.F.E. Act passed. Call, email, fax your Senators if they’re not on arleneorlando’s list and implore them to support this bill.

In April, I will be riding 1150 miles across four eastern states and talking to everyone I meet about this very subject! You can read about my RIDE FOR THEIR LIVES and fundraiser on Facebook. I’d sure appreciate your support.

    • Cindy, one thing that keeps coming to my mind is trying to get Al Gore to take a stand on these issues. He is not running for office and has a lot to answer for… if you can focus on getting him to speak out it would be a good thing for a lot of reasons.

    • Cindy,
Two years ago I wrote to a group of senators that were on a committee and sent each of them a CD that was copied from the video that was taken secretly at the Bouvry slaughter plant in Canada. I asked each one to please stop US horses from being ending up in the slaughter pipeline. The only one of the crooks that answered me was Senator John Cornyn. That man said he would not cosponsor any bill that stops horse slaughter because he feels it would stop a horse owner from disposing of his property as he saw fit. Cornyn is one of the politicians that is given the largest amount of donations toward his reelection and plenty on the side to make sure no anti-slaughter bills are ever passed. He is supported by all of the ranchers in Texas. He needs to be voted out but he will die of old age still in office.
