“The captured horses become the property of the license holders and there is no requirement for them to share information about what happens to the horses…”
CALGARY – The province of Alberta is releasing the final numbers from this year’s wild horse capture.
Three permits were distributed in January to allow the capture of up to 200 wild horses near Sundre.
The province says the capture is necessary to control the population, although several ranchers say the horses have had a rough winter and the capture isn’t needed.
Permit holders can do as they please with the animals once caught, but many are sold for meat.

The controversial practice sparked a public outcry, and led to many protesters doing what they could to stop the horse roundup.
On Wednesday, Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development announced 15 feral horses had been captured this season.
However, they aren’t sure what will become of the animals.
“The captured horses become the property of the licence holders and there is no requirement for them to share information about what happens to the horses once captured,” explains Public Affairs Officer Carrie Sancartier.
The capture wrapped up at the end of the month.

This makes me sick just as I feel every time the BLM rounds up ild horses.and supposedly puts them in the hands.of these contractors or their death camp holding pens while we watch from a distance of course. We write to our Congress people but our words Fall on deaf ears. How many if our own have died in slaughter houses? I support whole heartedly the Canadians who want their horses safe. We all need to do but what next?

Here we go again. The same damn thing. Capture and no respect for our wild horses lives. Stop this cruel punishment. Control some of the mares and let them be free to roam. Just brings more heartache for our wild horse populations. They can be controlled Canada.

Shannon Mann is putting in an around-the-clock effort as she fights to end the capture.
She has been camping in the snow near one of the traps outside of Calgary for five days, in an effort to deter the man legally allowed to capture the feral horses.

UPDATE: Horse capture protestors released after arrest
CALGARY – Five protestors arrested in connection to Alberta’s controversial horse capture have been released.
They were taken into custody on Tuesday at a site near Sundre where protesters have gathered in an attempt to stop the capture of feral horses.
Retired rancher Darrell Glover says he travelled to the area to help some friends pack up their camp site.
“We chatted with the RCMP at the time and asked how close we were allowed to get to the site,” says Glover. “We didn’t get a satisfactory answer as to how close we could get.”
