The European Commission has implemented a conditional ban of the import of horsemeat from Mexico following a series of audits by the Food and Veterinary Office. 1. I was sent a copy of this earlier by Canadian Horse Defense but what I would like to know is the EU the only horse meat market that Mexico sells to? I know Canada flies live horses to Japan for slaughter but is Japan the only other market they have?
I hope it is but you don’t know til you ask.

  2. It’s about time some of these “eating horsemeat” countries do something to stop their receiving slaughtered horses from Canada and Mexico. Maybe we will see these plants go out of business because they no longer can export to these countries. What a wonderful day that would be when no one wants slaughtered horse meat. I hope that day is just around the corner. God Bless our horses.

UPDATE – EU suspends Mexican horsemeat imports

This announcement may have been a bit premature. According to a source in Europe

“……as it needs to be approved by a standing committee of the Commission, which wasn’t due to meet yesterday. In fact, the relevant committee (the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health), or the configuration that relates to import conditions, isn’t due to meet again until January. However, any such decisions should be published in the Official Journal.”

It appears that Mexico can, for the moment, continue to export to the EU.

We will keep you posted as developments occur.
