Our guest tonight is Sinikka Crosland, Exec. Dir. of Canadian Horse Defence Coalition, people and national groups that have joined together to ban the slaughter of equines for human consumption in Canada, as well as the export of live horses to other countries for the same purpose.

Sinikka will talk about horse slaughter in Canada, and the  7,000 horses transported live by air  from Canada to Japan each year for slaughter.  3 or 4 large horses are crammed in wooden crates with little room to move around, let alone lie down to rest.  No food or water is provided during the grueling journey to another continent.  Canadian legislation permits horses to be transported without food and water for up to 36 hours, but sometimes, due to flight delays, the 36-hour period is breached.

The carrier responsible for shipping these horses to their deaths is Atlas Air, Inc., based in Purchase, New York.

YOU can help!  Please share and sign the petition on Change.org to ask that Atlas Air Cargo cease flying draft horses to Japan for slaughter

The Truth About Horse Slaughter in Canada (WARNING: this video contains GRAPHIC SCENES):

Tonight’s show is hosted by Debbie Coffey, V.P. and Dir. of Wild Horse Affairs for Wild Horse Freedom Federation.

  1. I bet the majority of these horses come from the US. As soon as the sun rises, I wil be on the phone with Atlas Airlines in New York. A comment was made that FedX was guilty of transport and I called their headquarters. They told me that they do not transport horses or other equines to slaughter. It’s all the dirty secrets that many if these US companies have that need to be brought to light. Damn them all!! If every person reading this blog pushes their Legislators, maybe just maybe, we will pass this legislation in the US. Japan kills every thing and is one of the most inhumane countries-from whales, dolphins, dogs cats and what ever along with China. The beloved Ferdinand ended his life there because his off spring were not fast enough. Some government agencies like the BLM are no better. The shameful part about this is that they use our tax dollars to do it! I will be in Washington, DC on September 29th marching and speaking for those who cannot speak. Nancy Watson and Rita Reika deserve our deepest sense of gratitude for putting this program and march together. They have awakened the sleeping Giant of hundreds if not thousands of Horse Warriors. The count is up to almost 400 to 500 people attending with many more visiting local district office on that same day. We must STOP the transport and slaughter globally!

  2. As stated, just sent my email to Atlas Air, Inc expressing my sadness and disappointment that found this part of air cargo a productive part of their business .

    • Thank you, Gail. It seems there was a petition/letter sent to Atlas Air, but looks like it has ended at this point. I’ll ask our guest about it tonight.

  3. Not all horses sent to slaughter are from the US, many are from Canada actually a lot are from Canada. This whole industry is twisted, there are too many horses the breed business is only concerned and interested in the in the amount of money they get in return. TB are only valuable if they are winners, yet even winners end up in slaughter. Every year more horses are bred for money and few succeed. The horse has become a disposable item for a lot of people just like dogs and cats. I know someone who wants to breed horses, why I ask oh to sell. Horses are being treated as a commodity. I believe in quality over quantity…if there was less breeding the value of a horse would increase and selling them to slaughter would not be a profitable decision. We have to address the breeding of horses and the value these horses have, what they can do and what the do after. Its not just the racing industry its, anyone can bred their horse and sell it for slaughter. I try to help where I can financially but the problem needs to be looked at the breeders. What and why are so many horses bred each year only to have horrible endings. Perhaps its time we look at the breeding industry and stop trying to play catchup with rescues, and that way we do not have to made a life and death decision about who gets rescued and who gets slaughtered.

  4. Signed the petition and also went to Atlas Air, Inc. (contacts) and sent personal emails to them individually.
I guess we all know that many of these horses being shipped to overseas slaughter are American horses and we also know that our American wild horses from public lands often “disappear” into this kind of slaughter pipeline.

  5. Thank you. This is a subject that is very hard to talk about or listen to it or think about but we cannot right this BIG wrong if we don’t look it this evil straight in the eye. Thank you.
