BLM Issues Biased Report to Intentionally Mislead Congress and Public on Wild Horse Issue

WASHINGTON, D.C. Dec. 3, 2010 – Today, the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (AWHPC) – a coalition of 40 leading public interest, environmental, and humane organizations – criticized and labeled as “biased and politically motivated” the issuance of an Interior Department-Bureau of Land Management (BLM) report on the treatment of wild horses in government roundups. Its release coincides with Congress finalizing of 2011 fiscal legislation in which BLM’s wild horse budget will be allocated.

Aerial Survey Reveals Twin Peaks Wild Horse Population Decimated

A September 24th flyover survey of the California-Nevada Twin Peaks Herd Management Area by respected wildlife ecologist Craig Downer reveals that only about 265 wild horses remain in this 798,000-acre range in the wake of the recent BLM roundup, which captured 1638 horses. This is Leslie Peeples. She is a woman. See her nice picture with her and her nice horses. Leslie likes horses. Leslie has been around horses almost all of her life. Leslie says that is somewhere around 40 years give or take a few minutes. Leslie is scary. Big bad men are afraid of Leslie. Leslie was polite to big bad men but they were very afraid. Big bad men tried to run over Leslie with a big bad truck. Big bad men tried to chop her up with a helicopter. Big bad men were rude and mean to Leslie. Big bad men have body parts that are not too big. The brain is one of these body parts. Leslie is much smarter than big bad men.

The BLM Censoring Wild Horse Roundups

LAS VEGAS — The Bureau of Land Management has suffered two defeats in federal court in recent weeks. One judge ordered BLM to make public the names of ranchers who lease public land for grazing, something BLM didn’t want to do. A second judge struck down a BLM plan to severely limit public input into how public lands are managed.

Moratorium on Wild Horse Roundups Is Essential

Escalated removals of wild herds from the West are categorized as necessary by the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management officials. In a recent article, BLM Director Bob Abbey cited the need to “protect wildlife habitat, the horses themselves and the public rangelands from the environmental effects of herd overpopulation” as reasoning behind what appears to be a mad rush to clear the herds from publicly owned Western rangelands.
