EWA and Animal Law Coalition Call for Federal Investigation into BLM Covert Wild Horse Roundup

CHICAGO, (EWA) – On June 23, 2010, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Elko District office buried on its website a notice that approximately 175 “abandoned, domestic, estray” horses located within Pilot Valley, NV, were scheduled for impoundment beginning June 25. The round up was expected to take 3 – 4 days with corrals set up on nearby private land owned by Simplot Land and Livestock until the horses could be transported and placed under the jurisdiction of the State of Nevada.

Foreign Governments May Save U.S. Horses While Congress Sleeps at the Wheel

CHICAGO, (EWA) – Since the 107th Congress (2001), equine welfare advocates across the country have been trying to get elected officials to pass legislation to ban the slaughter of American horses. Polls have consistently shown that the legislation has the support of 70% of Americans, but without fail the bills have been stalled, blocked with secret holds, and left off the legislative calendars. Now it appears the European Union (EU) and Canada may stop horse slaughter before Congress.

Equine Welfare Alliance President Speaks of Pro-Horse Progress

The question was asked about how we at EWA feel about our progress against horse slaughter this year.

Please understand that we regard this whole process as an analogy to war. It is not fought on a single front or with a single strategy and there are many operations that we cannot talk about without giving away our advantage. Sometimes we can divulge things later, and sometimes not at all. For example, you probably now know that we worked hard to get the town of Harding access to the pollution and sewer records from Cavel, Dallas Crown and NVF. We did not go to them and say “please don’t build a plant that kills our beautiful horses.” We showed them that a plant would be bad for the community and we also showed them that there was no pot of gold.

Montana Rep. “Red” Ed Butcher Maintains Village Idiot Image

One needs to have a lot of pity on the family of retiring Montana Rep. “Red” Ed Butcher; you know that they have to cringe each time he steps before a microphone, picks up a phone or opens his mouth in general. There is just no way that this man’s lips can part without him sticking his foot clear up his mouth until his eyes bulge out; it’s got to be painful for those who are related to him, at least just a little bit.

In BLM “Speak” One plus One Wild Horse equals Zero Horses

At the conclusion of the bloody helicopter stampede that was called the Calico Round-up we reported that the BLM’s math was highly suspect when it came to accounting for the number of wild horses that were actually on the range. On the day the disastrous round-up ended, February 5th 2010, I wrote the article, “BLM’s Wild Horse Numbers Just Don’t Add Up” highlighting the fact that the number of horses in the Calico complex reported by the BLM pre-roundup didn’t match with what they reported post-roundup.
