Once Alive on the Range Now Dead in BLM Hands

A mystery is unfolding at a wild horse inmate program facility in Cañon City.

Bureau of Land Management officials discovered 19 wild horses dead in a pen Monday.

Several other horses in the same pen appeared ill.

The BLM and veterinarians are working with state and federal animal health authorities to find out the cause of the illness.

Some of the horses that fell ill have been euthanized.

The facility has been quarantined while investigators try to determine what happened.

  2. Arlene, did you see this article? We DON’T KNOW happens to them when they are shipped into the prisons. They are also shipped to Gunnison in Utah. WHO is going to see them there?

This is what happens to them when they are whisked out of sight to the prisons, never to be seen again.
Look at ALL of the pictures and scroll the arrow to the top to read the captions. These WILD HORSES have been through the trauma of helicopter roundups and being transported for miles, and GOD only knows what other things have been done to them along the way and then they CASTRATED….by WHO and HOW?

  3. Would love to know what the symptoms were and what the vets suspect is the cause. Or aren’t they looking that hard? They probably figure what’s another 19 or so when you’ve already destroyed so many. Louie, you are so right. Once these horses disappear into the black holes of prisons and LTH anything can happen and none is the wiser. I’m sort of surprised this even came out as a story at all. Guess someone was around and they weren’t able to cover it up fast enough. I call these gather related deaths. I don’t care if they occurred even years later.

  4. Stop the BLM so horrific, oh the anguish our poor wild horses have gone through. Now they are gone forever. So STOP ALL ROUND UPS AND LEAVE OUR WILD HORSES ALONE. BACK ON THE RANGE IN THEIR COMFORT ZONES.

  6. This is why I don’t understand how little we value our wildlife and environment that we would pay so little to leave it in the hands of prison inmates. I read about programs every little while that use prison inmates, whether endangered species work or horses and wildlife, and I always wonder if it is a good idea. I understand what they are trying to do, but these people are in prison for a reason, and it isn’t a good idea to entrust animals that cannot speak with people who have proven they cannot live by societal rules. I know it is too soon to make judgements, but let’s see how it all plays out. The BLM is a nasty lot, and these crooks have to go!

  7. Per FOIA data:
    Triple B roundup July/August 2011.
All stallions (except for 13 which must have been VERY young) were immediately shipped to Gunnison Prison and by February, twenty-seven of those died at Gunnison. Nine of those were reported as dead from “gelding complications”.
Like Louie said, did the prisoners do the gelding?
Other stallions/geldings were reported dead from broken legs and heads (this must be broken necks?) and unable to maintain body condition, etc.
More reported dead at LTH facilities.
More mares reported dead at Palomino Valley.
    That’s our BLM “management”…
    (please excuse my double-post)

  8. Tests should be made to determine the exact cause of death. Someone is responsible for these senseless deaths and when the truth is known, they should be held accountable. Why in the hell can’t they leave our poor horses alone?! It’s getting very ugly!

  9. The technology is there and it’s cheap…We need to demand live streaming webcams at all facilities, trap sites, even the choppers in the sky. I was told yesterday that they can’t because there is only a short window of satellite time. The girl obviously didn’t not understand the concept of stationary satellites that send pictures for NBC, ABC, CBS, Direct TV, Dish Network. What a diaper load.

Get the cameras up an running and we’ll see how well, or not, our horses and burros are treated!
