ROSWELL, N.M. —Processing horse meat for human consumption may still happen in New Mexico, but state officials are fighting to stop that.

For years a Roswell company called Valley Meat tried to slaughter horses in New Mexico and ship the meat overseas for people to eat. The company gave up the fight after years of court battles and a judge’s decision forcing it to stop.

Now a new company is trying to do the same thing, and the Attorney General is trying to stop it.

“Many of the same people who were behind Valley Meat are behind this new enterprise,” said Assistant Attorney General Ari Biernoff.

The AG argues the new company, called D’Allende Meats, is using the same plant and is proposing the same plan. Officials said the judge’s decision to stop the old company should stop the new one.

The attorney representing D’Allende Meats said none of the accusations by the AG’s office are true, and the new meat company has a right to go through its own process.

The attorney said this new company doesn’t have that history. He believes dirty politics, not the law, are driving this new fight.

The AG’s office is asking a judge to quickly make a decision. The state’s Environment Department said the new meat company has requested a permit and is now in the normal review process.

  1. All the more reason to never give up the fight and do what’s right for the protection of our equines and the public’s health! Just because they’re a new company it doesn’t give them the right to over-ride previous decisions.

  2. I sent the info to all 3 networks in Albuquerque on 10/26. I spoke with lead anchors & emailed the documentation and nothing until now. Let’s hope we get this right! The “new” atty is A. Blair Dunn, the same one for Valley Meat. His father is in a nasty recount for Land Commissioner of New Mexico AND has a ranch outside of Roswell! Get the picture? I do. They don’t, just want the $$$$

    • Bless your heart. I feel the same way. But we have to stand strong. They want us to crawl into a shell and give up. Together we can show them this is not going to happen, not now, not ever. The horses need us to be their voice. We can be sickened but not helpless. God bless.

  4. Valley Meats plant was stopped before for the very same violations it had racked up for insufficient and non compliant waste drainage systems and many other violations when they were processing beef. A quick check showed this info on the new company name based out of TX? They must file business name in New Mexico. Have to feed now, will do more research later. A lot of foreign companies are willing to fund any USA horse slaughter plant, Belgium, France, Dutch countries. I suspect the LLC’s are hiding this fact. Wonder if principal named party Hernadez is related to Valley Meats previous owner or has he even sold the property? I’ll dig into this further. http://www.bizapedia.com/tx/D-ALLENDE-MEATS-LLC.html

  5. It’ll never happen. We fought it in federal court and we’ll fight it again while welfare rancher feigns his opposition stance, he hopes this will get him unethical financial contributions. Such an eye roller.
