Horses Patiently Wait for…Someone
Before I took a trip to the Habitat for Horses the morning of Jan. 29, my heart broke as I read about 500 to 700 malnourished horses on a foreclosed Montana ranch.

Chicago (EWA) – A local prosecutor in Campbell County, represented by Wyoming State Rep. Sue Wallis, has announced there was no finding of fraud in a truck raffle culminating at the “Summit of the Horse” meeting last month in Las Vegas. But rather than settling the issue, the prosecutor’s findings only raise more questions.
Chicago (EWA) – On February 1st, Utah Senator David P. Hinkins introduced joint resolution S.J.R 11, titled “A Resolution Expressing Opposition to Federal Restoring our Mustangs Act.” The resolution expresses opposition to federal bills H.R. 1018 / S. 1579, known collectively as the ROAM Act. The only problem is that the ROAM Act was from the 111th Congress and no longer exists.
I spent some time reading your “Special Report MUSTANG Legends and myths. Faith, hope and charity.”
And, I must say that I was completely and utterly dumbfounded at the depth of misguided opinion put forth in this so called “report.” This is no report. This is a poorly drawn editorial and to call it anything else is an insult to any thinking person’s intelligence.
On page 23 of your document you paint a very rosy picture of the results of the roundup, but in fact overlook many positive aspects of leaving the wild horses alone. You mention that the rate of foaling will increase after the roundup. Yes, I agree, but is this not what you want to prevent by allowing the herds to self-stabilize? They do self-stabilize if allowed to fill their niche. I suggest you look into natural boundaries, predators, buffer zones, etc., as part of an effective Reserve Design concept.
Whether racing down the backstretch of a racetrack or making unbelievable plays on the polo field, horses and humans are a proven unstoppable team. Did you know that this bond also shaped human civilization? In the exhibition The Horse, explore the profound relationship between horses and humans and discover how almost every facet of human existence has been influenced by our union with the horse. Artifacts, dioramas, fossils and a multitude of displays guide the visitor through the evolution of the horse from the early equines that lived on North America’s Great Plains over 10 million years ago to the horses role in the development of nations around the world and its noble place in our society today. Through domestication, horses have allowed us to travel greater distances, expand agriculture, and enhance our efforts in battle; and have also become symbols of status and prestige. At the same time, we have shaped horses, breeding them in different ways to suit our needs.
The disturbing images of the roundup going on in eastern Nevada have upset many. We showed Nevada Congresswoman Shelley Berkley the video and she was appalled by the pilots behavior. Shelly Berkley–“I was troubled by images from the recent wild horse roundup. The Bureau of Land Management must ensure that all rules are followed during any roundup. Those who are hired to perform wild horse roundups must obey these rules and if they fail to do so, appropriate steps should be taken.”
The Wallis slaughter plant has been the subject of dozens of stories and in each it has been completely different. At first it was going to be a mobile slaughter truck that went around to various holding facilities like the Cheyenne Stock Yards (which Sue was “negotiating” to obtain). It was going to kill horses and feed the meat to prisoners and school children. The owners of the stockyards announced it would not be happening.
