Governor Mary Fallin saluted the young people involved in the 2013 Oklahoma Youth Expo- as she brought greetings to the crowd gathered at the Sale of Champions on Friday afternoon at the State Fair Grounds in Oklahoma City.

While there, the board of the Youth Expo honored the Governor for her interest and support of the “World’s Largest Junior Livestock Show” and presented her with a plaque and a special OYE vase. Afterwards, she talked with Farm Director Ron Hays about why she has attended the premium sale multiple times as both Governor as well as Lt. Governor down through the years. She says the Youth Expo is about the future of the state of Oklahoma and the educational opportunities provided young people from all 77 counties.

Hays also talked with the Governor about where she stood on House Bill 1999, the so called Horse Slaughter bill. HB1999 has passed the House, as well as the Senate Ag Committee and will likely be considered on the floor of the Oklahoma Senate this coming Tuesday. Speaking about the measure, Governor Fallin told Hays ” I know it’s very important to the people in the agricultural sector and one that’s had a lot of debate.” Governor Fallin added that “It is important that we have a humane way to take care of abandoned horses and those that are getting older.” As a result, the Governor indicated her support for HB1999- “I’m glad to see some legislation going through that will address this issue.” Hays asked if that means she is supportive of HB1999 and she replied, “Yes, it is a bill I think I can support.”

  1. She says she can support a bill that humanely slaughters abandoned and older horses.
What is humane horse slaughter? An old horse gets to be slaughtered just because it’s old, and the abandoned horse is doomed too. After serving human kind for 30 years it gets to leave the earth through absolute fearful violence! Every time now if I see an aging horse I can only think that poor fellow, his life will end very brutally.
I don’t know what we are doing to change this, where are our intelligent folks to solve this issue?
Our dogs and cats get to go more humanely, why not our horses? Not meaning to sound simple minded on this topic, but what is really being done to change things? Why can just anyone breed a horse irresponsibly and add to the over population of unwanted horses without in the end having to take full responsibility for the humane end of life issues that comes along with having horses?

I pity her and her endeavor to stay ignorant. Some one is obviously feeding her a lot of BS and keeping her stupid to what’s really going on. =/ And like a stupid blonde (I said stupid… There are smart blondes out there) She thinks? No. She either knows it or she doesn’t, there’s no in between on this issue. Period.

    • Yes, I too believe in Karma…but I am sure she has never put any thought into this concept!
We need to start sending her teachings, maybe she will learn. I would only wish this for her and all the horses she is sentencing to a violent end of life just because they are unwanted, old and too many of them or wild. I don’t want to take this thought any further fpr fear of saying the wrong thing

It appears the government truly believes her royal subjects are a bunch of dummies. Come on. Stop feeding the people lies. Horse slaughter is not humane whatsoever!

    • That is the problem. It’s all a lie from start to finish. “They” claim the slaughter houses will give us a humane way to clean up the mess of old and abandoned horses. Instead, they slaughter young fat horses inhumanely and leave an environmental mess.

  6. Spineless Shady Seedy Spinster…she knows better than to think slaughter is humane or that we can’t see through her thinly veiled desire to please someone with a briefcase full of cash.

EquineNow lists 207 active horse breeding farms/ranch’s/facilities in the state 143 of which are QH producers and the majority of those are looking to breed exceptional race horses. It’s big money! And big business. Business with profits, losses, expenditures etc. It seems that by wanting legalized slaughter they are trying to squeeze that last dollar out of the horse by selling it at a loss and deducting it from their Federal Taxes.

In a July 2011 article Ann Corcoran summed up the truth of the business like this…

“consider that we produce race horses and literally throw MOST of them away in three years (heck if they had to keep them 7 years for the depreciation, they would have to feed them more than the depreciation is worth). I know a little bit* about horse welfare and the race horse industry is responsible for thousands of horses that don’t make it on the track or will never make it as a breeding animal and are discarded at about the age of three usually with injuries that make the horse unusable for riding. (A well-cared-for horse can live to 30 years and beyond).

Unless, the horse is incredibly lucky, the majority of those poor animals make the circuit of unhappy living situations and ultimately die young. You can’t even give them away! All the while the breeders keep breeding in hopes they will hit the big time with a winner (and are subsidized by you!).

And, as for this employment argument—most breeding farm laborers and track workers are illegal aliens!”

    * Full disclosure, before I knew better I bred race horses and now for the last ten years I’ve cared for neglected horses.” Ann Corcoran

As you can see Ms Fallin the horses aren’t old nags. They are typically 3 years old and in fairly good shape…just not racing form. You’re not looking for a humane ending of life…you’re looking for ill-gotten gains!

  7. I have a question. The gov says slaughter is needed for abandoned horses. If they can’t find the owners, how are they going to get medical histories to determine what meds the horses have been given?

Once again, a total disregard for food safety and more proof they will never comply with food safety laws.

The insulting part is that the pro-slaughter people think they’re hood-winking the global public. And, nowadays cats and dogs are suffering from the same maladies as their 2-legged counter-parts so nobody wants to feed their 4-legged family members any less than “human grade” food. The dreck spewed by pro-slaughter proponents keeps pilin’ on the layers of disbelief as to how low they’re willing to go and their whole philosophy of ‘mind over matter’: They don’t mind, so it don’t matter.

They had a camera on the property but all it was able to capture was a truck with bright head lights. Makes you wonder where this horse is going to end up. Will more horses start to disappear this way now that horse slaughter is made legal in this country?

  8. Another brainwash/pay off job by Big Ag. Funny how they don’t have to present actual facts backing up their claims about these old and abandoned horses. That’s why they go to auctions and competitively bid on horses for sale, right? Responsible horse owners call their vet if a horse needs to be euthanized, which is the vast majority of horse owners. Horse slaughter is a predatory for profit enterprise supported by the bottom feeders of the horse industry. And no horse “needs” or deserves to be slaughtered.

It’s going to be a little expensive to implement that drug residue monitoring program EU law mandates that the US hasn’t complied with, yet, isn’t it? Since currently import of equine from the US is not approved by the EU at this time. Third country’s Canada and Mexico are currently violating EU law by allowing themselves to import horses from the US for slaughter and export to the EU. And with 9 million horses in this country and only 1% of them ending up in the slaughter pipeline, ALL horse owners will have to comply with a mandated EU drug monitoring program, just to coddle the bottom feeder minority.

I’ve sent two emails to her explaining the FACTS about the so-called abandoned and starving horses — explaining that slaughter has always still been an option for those who choose to send their horses through this torture so there’s no need for abandoned and starving horses; explaining that Canada has a huge problem with abandoned and starving horses, yet it has several slaughter plants. There just no connection. Why is she not doing the will of her people? I was also told to stop emailing her because it is hurting their cause. I am not defending them, but just saying how could she say the people of Ok are not opposed to horse slaughter? If they think these plants will provide jobs for the unemployed then what good is this to an already depressed population? You are providing for them “Dante’s Inferno”, the worst possible job a human being could take. I also believe that most of these positions will be filled by undocumented workers. That’s who did it before and there are plenty of those folks desperately seeking anything. Not meaning they are bad folks either, but some are just hardened to do what they must to feed their families.
This all needs to be taken a look at. Will there be hundreds lining up for these jobs?
If I was governor I would try try to recruit business that builds happy thriving communities that are not forced to do such horrible ugly work![and with our wealth we can research humane ways to deal with end of life issues for all our horses. This too can bring jobs to a community]
And then, how about tourism? Now that the world knows we have such an over abundance of wild horses, maybe they would like to come see the beauty of it all. Are there not some creative thinkers out there that can make this work…the rest of the world manages to create tourism as a major source of income, so why can’s we. admin says:
You make a great point. With the ban in place for 50 years, horse meat had little to no value. With a repeal, horsemeat will suddenly have a value, and this will not only create income for some but create other problems that legislators seem to be overlooking, like increase of horses being raised specifically for slaughter, higher chance of horsemeat entering the food supply, and horse theft. Supporters identify some current problems such as over breeding and horses being dumped in others pastures. If legalized, it may only trade some problems for a host of others.

And to another the comment the editor replies

    $45.00
Donor Horse Serum is serum collected aseptically from a standing herd of healthy equines, OR LIVE ADULT EQUINES PRIOR TO SLAUGHTER. The serum is separated aseptically from the blood of the animal and allowed to spontaneously clot. The raw serum is stored frozen at minus 20 degrees C or below until processed by aseptic filtration. Material is collected from animals located entirely within the U.S. The animals are inspected periodically by a licensed veterinarian and are certified free of diseases of clawed animals.

Been there done that. She’s gotten the calls, received letters. She done gone and jumped off the nearest levee–or at least her common sense has.

Skye told people that they were voting for the slaughter–not that it would be built.

My biggest question is this. If they insist on this–and somewhere down the road Oklahoma realizes the blunder they made–I don’t want my taxes going to clean up their mess.

So here’;s my deal. Slaughter all the horses you want with the following caveats. The owner MUST be present to turn the horse over to the plant. That means NO BLM horses, even titled ones. If you can’t provide a Bill of Sale the horse is simply refused. When businesses start to leave, crime rate is soaring, you have issues with toxic ground water–ABSOLUTELY NO FEDERAL MONIES WILL BE PROVIDED TO YOU. You become an entity unto your own.

You folks have only yourselves to fault. If you think for a moment that it will somehow be different because slaughter is being done here–better guess again. I totally recommend the Tim Sappington snuff film for what’s about to move in to your neighborhoods. That is if you can stomach it.

She sure would not be considered to be a christian woman in my eyes. God, help the people of her state..the people of her state should plan a mass rally at the state house before it is too late. Again, most of the children who raise the steers and other livestock are upset when the time comes and they must leave their animals. It is human nature when one cares for one of God’s creatures. However, there is a difference between most equines and other livestock. They are raised for human consumption where are horses are not..When Cavel, Intl closed, I thought that would be the last of a slaughterhouse every opening in this country. Feel, as in, showing or having emotions? Where do these sickos come from? What kind of life did they have that turned them into such indifferent monsters? It’s time that our “opposition” becomes the “opposing force to be reckoned with!” I used to think highly of 4H organizations, until I stopped & started to think about the eventual, negative, emotional impact, that each child would be going through, as they gently & lovingly raised & nurtured a young baby animal, probably gave it a name, probably, secretly became quite attached to said animal, conditioned it into a fine, blue ribbon winning show animal, only to have it auctioned or sold off for slaughter!! How horrendous is that, especially to young children! Don’t you think even things like this will either make them into uncaring, indifferent adults, or the total opposite, animal advocates!! I wanted my daughter to get involved with our local 4H horse group, so she could hone her showing skills & compete with her horse against others her age, but, not if anyone is pro-horse slaughter, that goes against our beliefs. Each future leader has a start somewhere, & that would be at home, so, what are people teaching their kids?? My 15 year old daughter has already written & sang a song with her friend about saving wild horses, & donated money collected to a wild horse sanctuary in CA. That was a couple of years ago. This year, she wrote an essay about the horse-racing industry, the good things, & she exposed the dirty little secrets that the public doesn’t know, like what happens to all the less than perfect, or less than famous horses. 31. Sarcastically speaking, as all have been so adept at stating facts and absolutes, when are they going to suggest that horse meat is a essential to a child’s diet…baby food, etc? Of course, that goes along with the other garbage that is in most boxed and canned stuff that is fed to kids; but, most parents don’t take the time to make “home made” meals. (Don’t worry people, when I was working, I didn’t have the energy much less the time to make food from scratch.) And, yes, I am being sarcastic and horrible, but to tell the truth, I am not going to be surprised at the future of this group of people when they start up the slaughter houses again, if they get past us. And if they do, I expect to see a horse meat ad like they did with SPAM. Lord. It never ceases to amaze me how corrupt this government is. Thank you Louie Cocroft for the researched material he posted.

  32. Another politician with no integrity. Big surprise. She’s one of the many instead of one of the few. Reminds me of that old Cree proverb:
When all the trees have been cut down,
when all the animals have been hunted,
when all the waters are polluted,
when all the air is unsafe to breathe,
only then will you discover you cannot eat money.

  33. I know many of so steamed right now as I am too. That’s the only comfort I have right now. I have a question or two…

Say this “woman” signs this. And then the SAFE Act is passed (please god)will that stop them from getting their slaughter plant.

How can this law pass if so many are really against slaughter? What about going to their State Supreme Court. If a lawsuit challenging this law was brought forth and then it was found unconstitutional–would they get there plant in the meantime?

    This just makes me sick…
