I am disappointed that only 4 congress people signed the letter, but with that said, I am happy that a letter was sent to the President. Hopefully, he will act on it.

That is because horses are not a major issue with constituents. People are more concerned with the economy, healthcare, and even what the Khardashians are up to.
The question is, how do you build awareness without coming off like a total irrational nut job like the host of this site? Activists can be their own worst enemy by their very nature they are biased and any objective truth about their cause is lost in sensational PR.

I also feel that this is a step in the right direction and was glad to see that it was addressed to the President rather than to Sec. Vilsack. At least this shows all of us that this issue is active and moving forward. I am not really sure why there were only these signatures included on this letter since it is quite obvious that we have many more legislators on board with banning it. I will continue to send my comments and requests to the President; and we must keep the pressure on.

Have you seen the KING AMENDMENT from the House Farm Bill the other day???? OH MY GOD it is BAD REAL BAD and it passed UNREAL, it essentially could slash ALL protection for animal’s horses of course included & Violates State’s Right’s…..Michelle Lujan Grisham brought up Banning Horse slaughter then she withdrew it from the table in light of King’s Amendment…….. WE NEED to tell all our Representatives to BLOCK this, don’t let it sneak in like the defunding language did….. THIS is NOT GOOD………….. UNBELIEVABLE something else to fight, GOD!!!!!!! CALLLLLLLLLL
Question I have though since she withdrew it, does this mean it is done?? It will never pass out of Agriculture Committee?? ANYONE KNOW??

This is a great piece of news. I hope the president takes action on it…executive order rather than a bandaide on a wound. Obama needs to stand up to these crooks in Congress…

Obama should follow the law and respect the separation of powers, checks and balances put in place by our founders. It is amazing that you advocate for Obama to act like a tyrant for your pet project. Considering the news of the past week, you should feel really ashamed.
We all have our pet programs that we think are important but lets not go down the road of installing a dictator to see that our piece of the pie gets more cherries than the others.
Your movement would be better off focusing less on changing government and more focus on using private land and money to help horses.
Glad to see this melodramatic overly sensational site is still up and running. Although, the old site design was much better.

Great letter with facts and information needed to make the case against horse slaighter to the one person who can make a difference, but will he? It’s imperative, now more than ever, to really put the pressure on and speak out against the horror of horse slaughter, the detrimental effects it has on our environment, as well as the serious health concerns on the consumption of horsemeat. Our horses, our environment and the people must be protected from a business that appears to be build on nothing but greed. I admire the Congressmen speaking out for their protection and ultimately the American people.

I checked Kings website and it looks like his amendment will stop any animal rights group like Peta and HSUS from helping to enact state laws that would prohibit states from entering into trade protectionism by forcing cost prohibitive production methods on farmers in other states. There wasn’t anything in the amendments that mentioned cattle or horses. California passed a law that required poultry farmers to raise chickens in larger pens so the chickens would have room to flap their wings and turn around. I know at the time all the chicken farmers was screaming about the cost, they had several years to make the changes. By 2015 California will only allow eggs from hens housed in cages specified by California. The impact of their large market would compel producers in other states to invest billions to meet the California standard of “means of production”.
He is claiming that this law would stop HSUS from creating a network of restrictive state laws that will slowly push agriculture production towards the demise. I don’t understand how a law like this would do anything to agriculture, all Calf wanted to do was put the chickens in larger pens so they would be a little more comfortable. I believe a few states have passed laws to stop sows from being kept in the gestation crates that will go into effect in either 2015 or 16. That’s more than enough time to build regular pens for them so they can move around like any other animal. I guess King likes to through his weight around.

If I am not mistaken, the problem for the factory farms is that people are wising up and they want clean food raised humanely – free range poultry, eggs, pork, and beef. If they can buy what they want from CA they will not buy the inhumane factory farm’s variety from places like King’s home state of Iowa thus requiring Iowa farmers to spend large sums of money to create competitive free range farms. This is very important to Big AG. Monsanto, for example, does not want to compete with organic.
And King’s sword is aimed at PETA and HSUS both being on our side of horse slaughter. It’s all about profit at any cost. To Hell with the consumer. To Hell with the WH&Bs. To Hell with clean food, water, and air. It’s one more sign of Fascism rearing another of its ugly heads.

King should watch “Glass Walls” every week until he understands what he is actually supporting. If he has any belief system at all, which remains to be determined since his PICA essentially promotes greed over abolishing these archaic inhumane practices, his amendment would have a very different focus.
The camera pans across stuffed chicken filled cages and zeros in on one small face that mirrors the barbaric cruelty that humanity is capable of inflicting on all creatures. That one shot will infuse your soul with divine knowledge breaking your heart into meaning of life changes and choices.

There are two King Amendments. The first amendment at this time does not apply to horses, but what if horse slaughter houses start to open. Would state laws similar to those in Texas and California which prohibit slaughter or transfer for slaughter be knocked down because those laws are considered to be trade protectionism or would any state laws to try to make horse slaughter humane or even cleanly reduce the profit from horse slaughter in other states? This is an attempt to stop anti-Big AG Bills from being enacted. See Mr. King’s comments below and his reference to the radical organizations.
It prohibits states from enacting laws that place onerous conditions on the means of production for agricultural goods that are sold within its own borders but are produced in other states.
“I am pleased that the Committee passed my amendment, the Protect Interstate Commerce Act (PICA) because states are entering into trade protectionism by requiring cost prohibitive production methods in other states,” said King. “PICA blocks states from requiring ‘free range’ eggs or ‘free range’ pork but covers all agriculture products listed in section 206 of the Agriculture Marketing Act of 1946. By 2014 California will require only ‘free range’ eggs be sold and the impact of their large market would compel producers in every other state to invest billions to meet the California standard of “means of production.” PICA will ensure that radical organizations like the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and PETA are prohibited from establishing a patchwork of restrictive state laws aimed at slowly suffocating production agriculture out of existence.”
