An Equine Thanksgiving in January

OpEd by R.T. Fitch ~ president/co-founder of Wild Horse Freedom Federation

An Open Letter to the Advocacy

Thank you from our herd to yours!!

Thank you from our herd to yours!!

During the course of the week we constantly comb the internet for not only the very latest equine related news but also for something good, uplifting and encouraging to be able to share with you on our “Feel Good Sundays”.

I, for one, believe that we need at least one day of rest, one day to step back and a brief moment of peace away from the clatter and noise of the fight.  We need that day to recharge, regroup and reaffirm and there is no better day than Sunday to do that.

So today, I really did not have to look too far for good news, it pretty much fell into our laps and we can freely feel good, this day…and it’s pretty simple;

American horses will not be cruelly slaughtered for human consumption on American soil this year…done deal, full stop.  Rejoice.

All of the efforts of the sick, twisted and perverted throw-backs have been for naught.  They have lost, just as they always have and always will because they are the dank, dark minority and the brightness of the light will always over-wash them; they are in every sense of the word, LOSERS.

I will not darken the day by giving my opinion and abject analysis of those who live only to murder, maim and torture but be assured that they are a very unhappy lot, this day, as they have spent years with their mouths wide open only to find that orifice currently filled with their own boots.

But although we celebrate this great victory, the trucks still cross the border to our south and north with American horses both domestic and wild destined to lose their precious lives for no good reason other than to pad someone’s wallet.

Our work is not done, we have much to do…but today, make a toast.  A toast to each and every person who made a call, sent a fax, signed a petition, held a sign, attended a rally or simply told their neighbor about the plight of the American equine, to all of those people…I salute.

Each and every one of you are a bright light, a positive influence and a power to be reckoned with…I salute.

My hat is off, my bald spot is exposed and I raise my glass to each and every one of you…I salute.

Thank you, from the horses, for being you…I salute.

You are the best.

SALUTE and Keep the Faith.

  2. “sick, twisted and perverted throw-backs”…R.T. you must loosen up and tell us how you really feel… 🙂

Yes it’s a great day and a great beginning of improving the lives of our equine brethren. Since it’s Sunday let’s also give thanks to the big man upstairs. He softened some hearts and shown a great light on a travesty against his greatest four legged creation.

Revelation 19:11-21 – And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him [was] called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

  5. We have much to b thankful for in this good news. I commend everyone who took the initiative to do whatever was possible within their means. Now I hope to focus on changing the mindset of people who are oblivious to how many unwanted horses cross the borders to the fate we all know. This was one of the leading arguments used by pro-slaughter advocates including the largest breed organizations. As I breath a sigh of relief and celebrate what RT has accomplished, my mind will be working to see whatever can be done to stop the export. God bless!

    • Oh, no accomplishment, here, Jennifer…I am only the paperboy spreading the news. It is my hope, and it worked this time, that someone with the ways and means picks up the newspaper and runs with it. It is so VERY important to get the message out there, however it can be broadcast! 😉

      • Well, paperboy – you done good! We are all proud of your work both spreading the news AND the practical everyday labor of love physically helping the horses. Wish I could do more but then there are many of us who do what we can & try to support the ones who do the heavy lifting.
        Happy Sunday!

      • Hi R.T. I’m from Canada and I want to congradulate you on the US victory to stop horse slaughter for another year. Although this is not the end unfortunetly we need to get the safe act passed so the horses across the boarders will benefit as well. We ALL need to work together from both ends to stop this for good. As victory comes to those in numbers…lets be a team and get this done..Once again congrats!!!

    • Jennifer-
Stopping the export of horses to slaughter requires some serious internal housecleaning on the part of the horse industry. I have found telling pro-slaughter advocates that the horse industry is better off without owner/breeder/trainers so incompetent that they have to be able to kill the horses they ruin in order to stay in business does shift the tone of the interaction. 6. I am absolutely thrilled by this and wish to thank everyone who helped make it happen – Victoria McCullough, Sen. Joe Abruzzo, Vice President Biden, RT’s blog, people who wrote letters, and took a moment to consider the suffering of another living being, Ginger Kathryns for the wild horses. I was sorry to hear that Sen. Jim Moran will not be running for reelection in November. Nowadays, people like him in government are rare.

Jerry you do a great job on reporting, I am happy to hear of some good things, all bad things just get you own . we fought good but I think it is still an up hill battle we have to go for the safe act to be push through. Good advise you just gave, I do not trust them….they want it as bad as we don’t want it .

  9. Wild horses hear our cries, wild horses feel our passion, they know, they hear, they desire to be free again, free. I will continue to fight the fight for them to be free to roam and have their families close to them. Every advocate that hears their cries and understands their plight, I commend all of you, yes we have more work to do. Keep those horses all over the world safe. We are wild horse advocates filled with love, compassion, spunk, when we fall down we get back up in the saddle with all the bruises and pain.
This is a beginning. We need advocates in powerful roles to help us continue this important task to free our wild horses out of those prison cells they reside in now. 55,000 (thousand of them). R.T. I love you dearly and am so proud to be a part of this turning point, speaking about our wild horses plight to others, calls to the govt, to fight for our wild horses freedom. I own a few horses, but I have one named Freedom Thunder. He reminds me every minute of the day why I continue this important fight. Talking with Craig Downer the other day, he has written some beautiful melodies for the wild horses and I am putting words to those melodies. How special and fun. We are bonded for life all of us together our wild and domestic horses.
They add so much to our lives. God Bless all of our horses and advocates every where making a difference. I love you and my horses love you. March onward advocates, keep marching for victory, yes we will, amen. We will not stop. we have much work to accomplish in the future. Keep on keeping on. Winston Churchill. read some of his books, incredible man he was. Advocates march on and don’t look back. We will make great strides together for the wild horses, yes we will, amen.

  15. R.T., thank you for being such an eloquent voice for the advocates! Your analogy reminded me of a quote attributed to St. Francis of Assissi (the Patron Saint of animals):
“All the darkness in the world cannot dim the light of a single candle.

We are the candles and together we will beat back the darkness.

  16. Thank you for providing a “Cheers” for the community of advocates. Unfortunately, you are all too right about the patience and ability of some people to hang in there, constantly coming up with one strategy after another to destroy what means so much to so many of us.

So SW is trying to get Wyoming to legalize the use of MJ? This is a good sign—at least she’s thinking of a Plan B since her protracted efforts with Plan A have not worked out. While I am sympathetic with those who love the land and work to produce food for people, I hope Rep. Wallis has a revelation during the next polar vortex regarding land use in Wyoming.

Perhaps Wyoming and the American people would be better served if Wyoming were to capitalize on being one of the four Great Basin states where the horse is known to have been present for millions years before it wasn’t—wouldn’t it be wondeful if people driving up Interstate 80 were treated to an historic celebration of the horse as native North American wildlife. Free-roaming horses draw a lot more human interest that free-standing, bird killing, too-costly-for-energy-yielded wind mills.

When 30 horses burned alive n May6th on Route 81 Whiney Point NY near Cortland County , cars pulled over with children and the children cried “help the horses”….today because of you Mr. Fitch and all the Horse Heroes that number in the thousands and NOW millions with this passage – I can answer ….”we are helping”… and I propose that I will stand on that spot and celebrate when the SAFE ACT passes this “2014 The Year of NO HORSE SALUGHTER- !!!!!

  18. I live in NY not far from where the trailer burned. I would hope cars pulled over – not just to “watch” a tragedy – as is the case so much of the time. The SAFE Act needs to pass, and the trailers full of horses being sent to slaughter HAVE to be stopped.
