  1. Isnt this sanctuary in California? I have to believe the water situation has made it really hard for them – altho the rain is supposed to be coming! A friend of mine who lives in So.Cal said it could be biblical!!!!!! Hope not.

  2. Barbara Clarke did a fantastic job on the radio talking about the animals she is SO passionate about and – she exudes the meaning of “dedication”. Barbara talked about the wild stallion ACE and Houdina (everyone’s favorite burro who is the escape artist) and the difference between a sanctuary and a rescue and many other important issues concerning DreamCatcher.

She told about how one time she had to walk miles and miles to get to about a hundred horses that had escaped into the neighbor’s property and when she found them, she was so tired that she just yelled at them (she is usually very soft spoken) and they all acted like kids caught with their hand in the cookie jar and they all ran straight toward her … then past her and on home. From what I can figure, the horses and burros think of Barbara as their “lead mare”.

Last summer I was visiting DreamCatcher when a young stallion got out and chased “the old people” (mostly old Arabs/domestic horses that she keeps running free near the barn so they can have their special senior feed) and that stallion chased those old ones until Barbara got the barn gate open and called to the old ones (called each by name and they know their names) and when the old ones went into the barn and the stallion followed and then it was a real circus inside the barn until Barbara called to each old one to go back out the gate until only the stallion was loose in the barn and then she got him into a pen. Now THAT was a REAL rodeo but Barbara used respect for the animals and her true “horse whispering” abilities and everyone ended up safe.

Thank you to Marti and Deb for your hard work and to Barbara for her lifetime of true dedication.

  3. WHAT a good show. Barbara understands the vast difference between wild and domestic Horses. She tells the story of a 29 year old gelding that had been captured when he was 2 years old. He had been used as a saddle Horse for all of those years. He looked and acted like a tired, old Horse. When he got to DreamCatcher, she decided that letting him out with the other Mustangs would be the best choice for him. No knowing how or whether he would fit in with the Herd, she took a chance. Not only did he fit in, he blossomed. He got himself a band of Mares, took charge of them and wouldn’t let any of the other geldings near them. He looked and acted more like a 10 year old. As Barbara said, that WILD is in their DNA. You can take the Horse out of the wild, but you can’t take the wild out of the Horse. She has NEVER had that happen with a domestic Horse…it’s been bred out of them.

  4. Barbara also has a wonderful story to tell about Ace, an old Twin Peaks Stallion who was rescued from the holding facility/concentration camp by some wonderful people who just wanted to give him back his life and as much freedom as possible.
