Horse slaughter Bill C-571 up next week for 2nd reading debate and vote
OTTAWA – New Democrat MP, Alex Atamanenko (BC Southern Interior) is holding a press conference to discuss his private members bill to restrict the slaughter of horses to only those raised primarily for human consumption and which carry a lifetime medication history. Bill C-571 is up for its second hour of debate on Monday, May 12 following which a vote is likely to be held on Wednesday May 14.
With over half the horses slaughtered in Canada being sourced from the US where slaughter has been shut down since 2006, he will be joined by US heavyweights Victoria McCullough (Owner of Chesapeake Petroleum, International Equestrian and Philanthropist) and Florida State Senator Joseph Abruzzo. Using arguments based on science and legal liability the US heavyweights were able to convince US Vice President Joe Biden to add language defunding federal inspections at US slaughter facilities for horses in the 2014 Omnibus Bill signed by President Obama this past January. Horses in the US cannot be slaughtered without federal inspections.
Also taking part will be Sinikka Crosland, Executive Director of the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (CHDC), a key ally and promoter of Atamanenko’s Bill C-571 and Dr. Ray Kellosalmi, CHDC medical and toxicology expert.

I think most people in Western Canada feel that there are more alternatives than slaughter, certainly more humane ways to deal with terminally sick and injured animals. Unwanted horses… I think breeders need to step up and take some responsibility for what they’re doing or for what they have done. Eastern Canada is where horses are slaughtered for restaurant food and openly advertised as such (on the menu). Quebec is openly keen to separate from Canada, so I can see them not conforming with the rest of Canada if this bill is passed, just out of spite.
BTW I am from Canada.

The people in Canada DON’T want Horse slaughter.
The people in the United States DON’T want Horse slaughter.
The multi-mega/international corporations hope to foist it upon them.
It also serves to benefit an industry(or industries) that view and use Horses as “throw-away commodities”.

I just got a update on the Atamanenko bill a press conference that included US Senator Abruzzo and Victoria McCullough the second reading of C-571 will be next week. If Canada blocks all US horses from being shipped to them for slaughter and its stopped here that will put most of the slaughter plants in Mexico and Canada out of business for good.

I’m Canadian and not so proud of it most days. But, this is a great thing with the US and Canadian Politicians getting together and working on this. If us as people from both sides work together as well maybe we can celebrate our victory. Remember, the more in your army the better chance you have. LETS DO THIS FOR OUR HORSES….THEY NEED US!!!!

I lived a few years in Calgary and occasionally would drive my son to Lethbridge for his rugby, and soccer games. It broke my heart each time I had to drive by the Fort McCloud horse slaughterhouse with its adjoining stock pens and pastures full of unwanted horses of all ages. Lined up outside were refrigerator units waiting to be filled. I hope this bill passes and helps to end this terrible industry.

I hope commonsense with the truth and compassion prevails. It would certainly be a start in the right direction to end this horrific practice, once and for all.
