I was just sent a update from the humane society that the US Senate Appropriations Committee voted in favor of a provision that would prevent any efforts to resume slaughtering horses for human consumption on US soil. The amendment to the agriculture appropriations bill offered by Sens Mary Landrieu , D-La and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. and approved by the committee 18-12, disallows spending by the US Department of Agriculture in 2015. The President’s proposed budget for the next fiscal year included a prevision to block these inspections. Along with this info there was a list of the politicians that voted yes and the ones that voted no. One of the nays was Roy Blunt R-MO if I remember correctly he was one on the two SB’s that secretly removed the amendment when the last agriculture bill came up for a vote. I believe the other SB retired. All of the politicians that voted no are from some states that wanted to start up slaughter plants if I’m not mistaken. The list of states are, Tn,MO,AR, IN,MS,ND,NE,SD, KS,AR, AL and MT. My Senator, Patty Murray from Washington state was on the committee she voted to defund. I sent her a email last night and called this morning. I will send her a email thanking her for the defunding vote. What needs to be done is to pass a amendment permanently blocking horse slaughter from ever being allowed in the US again.

Hi Barbara, while HSUS article is about defunding horse slaughter plants in the U.S., our horses go across the borders to Canada and Mexico. Jane’s show was about the fight to do something to help stop our horses from going to slaughter in Canada.

Debbie, I consider the Jane’s show was important because I watched it, I consider what happens in Canada just as important since I have been calling, sending emails to senators for the better part of 10 years so I’m not new to this fight where other folks on this blog may be, I pass along information as I receive it.

The funding is important, but it is critical that we push our Legislators to pass the
“Safe Act” bill which would prevent the horses, burros and other equines from being shipped out of our country. Our breed associations share the responsibility for keeping the slaughter issue alive. Many horses who are spent in the show ring usually end up in the slaughter pipeline. My question for sometime is the continued breeding of horses when the economy is so bad. Homes are limited for the ones we already have. I commend Jane for stepping up to the plate and doing such a great job. There are many “Horse Warriors” out there who also send letters, email and continue to make calls. How anyone could defend horse slaughter is beyond me.
God gave us the horse and those who continue to auction and send our horses to slaughter will meet their Maker one day.
