BLM omits facts and uses fuzzy math to roundup wild horses in Pine Nut HMA in January

Some interesting background before you read the news article below:  It seems that if we even just look at one grazing allotment on the Pine Nut HMA, the Buckeye Allotment, BLM allows about 375 cattle (and don’t forget that cow-calf pairs only count as one in BLM fuzzy math, so this number could be doubled) to dine on public lands for about 5 1/2 months out of the year.

The Buckeye Grazing Allotment permittee is Bently Family Ltd. Partnership (with the 7th highest taxpayer assessment in Douglas County, Nevada, in 2013-2014, at $12,385,310, and also oil in California).  The President & Director of Bently Ranch is businessman Christopher Bently, who’s also the CEO of Bently Holdings, and is on the Board of Directors of The Burning Man Project.  He was CEO of Bently Biofuels, but just sold it.  He’s also CEO of Bently Enterprises.  His father was billionaire Don Bently.

Also, in BLM’s Oct. 2010 Environmental Assessment to roundup wild horses in the Pine Nut HMA in Nevada, the BLM claimed there were 148 horses within the Pine Nut HMA and they were going to treat 45 mares with PZP.  So, that would leave about 103 wild horses without fertility control in Oct. 2010.  So even if ALL STALLIONS GAVE BIRTH, and using BLM’s questionable estimate of a 25% increase per year for wild horse herds, that would mean in 2011 there could’ve been 129 horses, in 2012 there could’ve been 162 horses, in 2013 there could’ve been 203 horses and in 2014 there could’ve been 254 horses.  (But only IF ALL of the stallions also gave birth.  And only IF no horses died.)

However, the BLM now claims there are 330 horses living in the Pine Nut HMA (see article below).  It seems as if BLM’s Win Equus population modeling, along with all other aspects of BLM’s wild horse & burro “management,” is seriously flawed.                –  Debbie Coffey

Feds plan wild horse roundup for January

A pair of wild horses standing alongside Dump Road in 2006.

More than 330 wild horses living in the Pine Nut Mountain herd management area will be rounded up by the Bureau of Land Management beginning in late January.

The BLM’s Carson City District, Sierra Front Field Office has issued the decision to gather 332 wild horses and remove approximately 200 excess wild horses within and outside the Pine Nut Herd Management Area).  As many as 132 wild horses will be released back to the range following the gather.  The gather area is located south of Dayton and east of Carson City and Gardnerville within Lyon, Douglas, and Carson City Counties.  The gather is scheduled to begin late January 2015.

A population inventory completed in August 2014 documented 332 wild horses.  The Appropriate Management Level for the HMA is 119-179 wild horses.  Based on the inventory, and monitoring data showing impacts from an overpopulation of the area, BLM has determined that removal of the excess wild horses is necessary to achieve a thriving natural ecological balance.

Excessive grazing from wild horses has not only degraded the sage-grouse habitat, but has also removed and reduced the number of native grass plants in areas, which affects the overall availability of forage grasses in the area and has reduced the number of wild horses that can be supported by current range conditions.

  1. “A population inventory completed in August 2014 documented 332 wild horses.”

Easy enough: Show us your ‘documentation’.

332 wild horses shouldn’t be too difficult to photograph or video, especially if done from the air. So let us see the pics.

No one who advocates for wild horses and burros can be taken at their word on anything – research on the range must ALWAYS include visuals if we’re to be taken seriously. It’s past time for the Bureau to be held to the same standards as we are.

So show us the damn horses. It’s that simple.

  2. Yes I will leave a comment. I have thirty years of horse experience and I didn’t know stallions can foal. That’s what the BLM numbers figures come out to.
Also horse’s are picky they don’t eat to the ground. Horse’s only eat tops off grasses and that’s s fact. These must really think we are stupid. Don’t insult my intelligence and majority of horse supporters are horse people. And know these are nothing but lies. It’s always lies all the time.
Removing these horse’s and the info on who’s cattle are grazing. The rich Mr. Bentley another bossy cattle rancher getting way a rich one at that disquisting!
So what does this tell you. Well it tells me money talks and bullshit walks. Same old story. We taxpayer’s are getting screwed again.
Screwed by livestock ranchers and Big Business is always screwing the taxpayer’s.
Everyone should boycott range beef and don’t buy lamb. And don’t buy any wool product’s.
I buy my beef local for years every since this wild horse roundup crap started.
There Mr Livestock Rancher and Big Business.

    • Jane, good points. I have over 50 years horse experience and loved them all my life. Yes, Big business is screwing us all and we have been sold off . AS for beef, cattle defecate in the water causing E. coli and algae and cause erosion by over-grazing. All beef needs to be boycotted as well as all meat really . Cattle are even allowed in our national forests to destroy young trees and cause erosion . I’m a farmer’s daughter so I saw what cattle did to my dad’s farms and what they’re doing to other farms here in KY now. The cow paths are permanent too and stream and pond banks destroyed. Eating meat is not necessary to be healthy. I haven’t eaten it in 30 years .

  5. The Pine Nut herd has already been gathered and the mares PZP’d. Thanksgiving 2012, the mares were separated from the foals and PZP’d. All hell broke loose when the mares were not then paired up with the foals but trucked off. The mares were brought back and in the malay of pairing, one foal’s face was broken. Remember? This is BS. I’d say this herd is being rounded up and brought to zero growth for two fold reason: one of which is to carry out the chemical management plan proposed by “one of our own at the RAC meeting recently held.”. The other is to stay in the good graces of Mr. Bentley who has had the gall to force BLM to expand a small artist gathering into a decadent full on plastic world exploitation of some of the most fragile playa in the world.

  6. And as a reminder: the Pine Nut horses are small. Historical records of releases of mine ponies make up the core of the herd. These are not full size horses unless the nearby ranchers have used this herd area as their personal pasture. I’d love to see a comparison of genetic tests from years ago to ths coming up capture.

    • Jan, good point, since it relates to how the BLM determines the AUMs acceptable for any given area… from what I’ve read they figure a horse (any horse) at 1.25 AUMs, and one cow/calf pair as 1 AUM. If these Pine Nut horses are as small as you note, they should probably be figured at .6 or .8 AUMs (1 AUM is based on a 1,000 lb. animal). Their actual grazing needs may be closer to half what is being calculated for them by the BLMs modeling software.

  7. In addition (per FOIA) also captured via food/water trapping in combination with some helicopter captures and removed from the Pine Nut HMA between December 2012 and October 2013 (11 months) were:

    4 wild horses … on Dec. 4, 2012
    6 wild horses … on Jan 31, 2013
    7 wild horses … on Feb 27, 2013
    1 wild horse … on June 6, 2013
    1 wild horse … on Sept 12, 2013
    1 wild horse … on Sept 18, 2013
    4 wild horses … on Oct 22, 2013

And how many others that BLM has not told the public about before or since then?

And how many other wild horses and burros from other HMAs are being captured and removed and put into the “pipeline” without telling us??? We will never know about all of them but from what we DO know … we are being robbed of our wild ones and our wild ones are being robbed of their lives.

    • This report is exactly the point of demanding a central inventory of all wild horses and burros caught under the BLM program expendoiture. As a taxpayer, I want to see an inventory of the horses, their HMA, their sex, their age, a photo, their brand – then a record of their movement after capture. BLM does have this inventory – am told – but is not publically available.

Is that something you would want? I have asked for it, sent follow ups and received very nice responses. Of course, I got pushback from lazy and closed minded “wrangler” types but if you would like to see BLM become accountable – demand the inventory the Act mandates.

      • Jan-
Of course this data should be available to all of the public all of the time! And yes they do have it. I have some … but had to do a formal FOIA request for each one but that can and should be done for all of our wild ones but it takes time – don’t expect miracles – remember who you are dealing with and their commitment to transparency … (choke, cough, gag).

In addition to current information on all of our captured wild horses – all the aerial (and ground) population survey data of our wild ones still in the wild should be available to the public on a monthly/quarterly basis per HMA and all vet reports of deaths (such as Scott City feedlot) should be available to all Americans. And all capture/removals of any of our wild ones should be available to all of us also without a FOIA and on and on. There is NO reason for them withholding this information unless there is some fraud going on. Surprised? I doubt it.

Why don’t we have that available? Because they don’t want the public to know. I have an ongoing (over two years now!) FOIA regarding the water/bait trapped horses from all HMAs. Why do you think they do not want to give me the information although by law they have to??? Because the trapping contractors were in violation of the contracts – i.e.it clearly appears there was fraud involved and the BLM was in violation of the contract law (paying the contractors without following the contract with documentation etc) … i.e. again it appears to be fraud against the tax-payer.

And did you know that they just captured and removed (or are in the process) of capturing over 100 of our Twin Peaks wild burros? Yep… a fact. And although I have been on the ” interested party” list for years (supposed to be notified) … do you think they notified me? No.

These things that we have a right to know do not concern “national security” … they are what we tax-payers and American citizens have a right to know but when it appears that our own American government is hiding their facts and motives … then that is a very sad day and today is that day and my parents (both animal lovers) who both were in the military during WWII to protect their grand country and the ideals that it stood for and for their children (me) …… they would roll over in their graves at what our government is doing.
Sad … but we cannot give up … for the sake of our future generations … be they two-legged or four-legged.
Thanks for listening to me rant.

      • Not a rant. Truth rolls like thunder.

If BLM were to be organized and centrally directed – these problems would not exist. But despite the complaining that the satelitte offices take their orders from Washington we continue to witness, if we are lucky, chaotic and pointless gatherings. I also do NOT receive notice, despite numerous requests. They are sickeningly juvenile in their responsibility to the majority of interested “shareholders.”. But so compliant to the immature and selfish minority.

I’m am sure our grandparents would roll and be as oiutraged that ANY class of citizens consider themselves elite . Especially civil servants.

Yes, I will continue working to get an inventory. I will continue to demand the public grazing program be expunged.

  9. Thanksgiving 2010 was the big total capture and total PZP and although it was supposed to be “treat and release” they treated and KEPT the mares and as you said Jan, they trucked the foals to P/V … and then trucked the mares over there for match-up and then trucked them back to the Pine Nut … what a DISASTER for our wild ones and NOT what they said they were going to do with treat and release (as if THAT in itself wasn’t bad enough for our wild horses!) and in the meantime they released the stallions back onto the HMA far from their home areas and I WAS THERE and these stallions were completely traumatized being turned loose after enduring the capture and holding and loss of their mares and foals! One of the saddest things I have ever witnessed. Stallions trying to find their way back to their home area and trying to find their families and running and stopping and looking and looking back and running again and looking again and not finding their families because they had “mistakenly” trucked the foals and then mares to Palomino Valley. All unnecessary animal abuse by the people WE pay to PROTECT them.

And to top it off … the same BLM person that was involved/in charge with the 2010 Pine Nut Wild Horse disaster is in charge again this time – BLM’s John Axtell.

Please comment for our Pine Nut wild horses.

  10. Not only stallions giving birth, but imaginary mares. 45 mares, and no stallions, were treated with PZP in 2010. So that takes at least 45 births that did not happen. It doesn’t really matter though – it is just a figment of the ranchers/vendor imagination. For the tngue hanging out, frothing at the bit to get the horses and burros rounded up, I’m beginnign to think we are witnessing BLM porn. There is no reason to explain the careless and lack of concern for the reality of the dangers the wild horses and burros face once they are captured. It is really disgusting and time it is addressed. Thank you Grandma Greeg for elucidating on the events f the last Pine Nut roundup. I remember the stories of the distraught stallions. I will be sending in my comments to BLM.
