Republicans narrowly blocked an amendment to a spending bill Wednesday that would have defunded inspections of horse slaughter facilities.
The amendment from Rep. Sam Farr (D-Calif.) would have prohibited funding for the inspection of horse slaughter facilities, which would effectively prevent them from operating.
GOP appropriators defeated the proposal in a 24-24 vote during a markup of a bill to fund the Department of Agriculture and Food and Drug Administration.
For the last three years, Farr said the USDA has asked Congress to defund the practice in its budget requests.
“Supporting this amendment does not stop the slaughter of horses,” said Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Ala.), chairman of the subcommittee that oversees the bill.
Aderholt argued the practice would just be moved “off-shore” and “out of sight.”
Democrats, however, said the practice is not humane and Congress has previously stated it does not support the slaughter of horses.
In April, Reps. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.), Frank Guinta, (R-N.H.), Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M.) introduced the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act to ban the killing of horses for human consumption in the U.S.
The bill also would ban the export of live horses to Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses, where the animals are killed and shipped overseas.
The U.S. already has a ban in place on the sale of horse meat for human consumption, but it must be reviewed by Congress each year.

So they want balanced budgets with Less Federal Spending? Yet. They pay for the Absolutely Most Unwanted American Horse Cruelty to produce toxic meats in America not consumed by Americans and take money away from other strapped meat industries? Who are these people? Let me guess they met in Roswell next to the crop circles?.

This is so wrong and beyond ridiculous and should make everyone angry. It’s time to start caring about animals. Saving horses is way overdue!

They have no moral sense for animals, hardly any for people other than themselves. Balanced budgets? now that is a real joke with the millions spent on the BLM and their so called land management.

Pretty sorry people who are in the government, they do not listen to what the people want they do as they please, they do not take the horses well being to account.

You can blame a large part of this on the Quarter Horse Association because I read a article a few weeks ago about the firing up their members to stop any bill that would block horse slaughter. Because that group of over-breeders knows that without some way to dump foals they can’t sell they will go bankrupt. This is what this gang has done for years they will kill or block any bill that is introduced to stop this cruelty. You will notice too that the new anti-horse slaughter bills are still sitting in committee where they generally go to die.

Here we go again. We spend so much energy to stop US horse slaughter that we could spend on eliminating the slaughter of any American horse anywhere.
