“There are dead animals throughout the property…”

LOXAHATCHEE, Fla. – An animal cruelty investigation resulted in six arrests Tuesday and the seizure of about 750 animals, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office.

Chopper 5 recorded police activity at property in the Loxahatchee area.

An organization called Animal Recovery Mission issued a news release stating that the activity is a raid on three animal slaughter farms and horse meat operations.

ARM staff members said the owners of three farms: Rancho Garcia, G-A Paso Fino and Medina Farm have been slaughtering horses to sell their meat.

ARM’s president Richard Couto says the agency witnessed grisly acts of brutality against animals. “There are dead animals throughout the property. There’s meat throughout the property. There are sick animals. Possibly diseased animals.”

He says horses were being butchered for their meat.

“Horses were being bought from the show horse communities throughout Wellington, from thoroughbred racetracks, from auctions, from Craigslist,” Couto said.

ARM describes itself as an investigative animal welfare organization and said it is working with the sheriff’s office and Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control.

The sheriff’s office has confirmed it is assisting with the ARM investigations.

The animals seized include goats, pigs, cattle, numerous species of birds, dogs, cats and fighting roosters, the sheriff’s office said.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is part of an Agricultural Task Force and says it took part in Tuesday’s investigation at the request of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Lee County said it is assisting with the transportation and recovery of multiple animals which were seized.

  1. When greed for money is a man’s king he does despicable things like animal cruelty, which leads to serial killers and abuse to women and children total lack of respect or caring for life. These people will burn in Hell someday. There should be a PRAYER VIGIL or some protest or event held against these farms for all of the animals that were touched by these men in Florida and farms like this hidden in the shadows of these perverse and cruel lives. I hope they at least get life in prison with no mercy like they did to these poor innocent animals. It will be difficult to forgive them of these attrocious acts just for money.

  4. Auctioneer 1st Man Charged Under California Law To Protect Horses From Slaughter

They were called Lacey and Squirt, two professional rodeo horses and beloved pets. But they ended up sold for meat on someone’s dinner plate overseas.
In a landmark case, a suspect has been charged with delivering at least one of them to slaughter.

The case is the talk of the town in Madera. Sheriff John Anderson has arrested a well-known businessman for an almost unheard of crime. “He will be treated no differently than anyone else,” Anderson said.

Billy Ray Brown Jr., son of the owner of the local B and B Livestock auction, is accused of sending a horse called Lacey out of state to slaughter for human consumption.

That is a felony in California. A law was passed in 1998 to protect horses. This is the first time that it has ever been enforced.

A paper trail led the detective across three states from California to Oregon, Washington, and across the border to a slaughterhouse in Canada.

  5. Richard Couto has been investigating this slaughter for a number of years. I went to his website a few years ago to find out more about what was going on in Florida. The place is loaded with thousands of people from the islands from Haiti to Cuba along with illegal aliens from Mexico and South America. There have been articles in the Florida newspapers about horses being killed right in their pastures with nothing taken except the hind quarters and other sections of the meat. I have always thought there is a black market going on selling horse meat out the back door of some of the ethnic markets that is scattered all over Florida. I doubt any of these markets are inspected for horse meat. From what one of his articles said and what was in the newspaper described how the animals are fed is that the so called farmers will collect boxes of vegetable trimmings from the back of supermarkets and use that as feed. Also these places can hide out in swampy areas of Florida and nobody has a clue they are there. You will have to check his website to see what is on it.

  6. Penalize Mexico and other countries for supporting this barbaric practice of importing our horses for slaughter. We can’t degenerate as a species into eating horses, dogs, cats and other companion animals. And then we need to reduce our gross over-consumption of cattle and chicken. It’s killing the planet and we’re not going to be left alone. We’re going to be extinct.

    • Send the immigrants and illegals back to their country. This is Absurd to have these practices going on in the U.S. from foreigners. We have enough American’s who do this with out over populating our country with immigrants who believe in the all mighty paycheck is brutalizing and slaughtering our animals as a good day…

I cannot believe we are on the slippery slope of losing our status as a good country.

    • Cant help but think that anyone who thinks horsemeat is such a delicacy and the “in” thing – it goes right along with the people who eat “exotic” animals! Why? Just to say they can? Pretty sad human beings. How far our species has come – straight down!

  7. Huge thanks to Richard Couto for all his efforts for animals in south Florida. The hellish things that he’s seen would shatter other men.
Shame on area law enforcement and authorities for failing to uphold laws. Their failures allow the perpetrators to continue to steal privately owned horses there and butcher them for slaughter there …. all unregulated.
What hell for horse owners there.

  8. U.S. Research Lab Lets Livestock Suffer in Quest for Profit
Animal Welfare at Risk in Experiments for Meat Industry
    By MICHAEL MOSSJAN. 19, 2015
    http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/20/dining/animal-welfare-at-risk-in-experiments-for-meat-industry.html?_r=0

These experiments are not the work of a meat processor or rogue operation. They are conducted by a taxpayer-financed federal institution called the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, a complex of laboratories and pastures that sprawls over 55 square miles in Clay Center, Neb.

The center’s parent agency, the Agriculture Department, strictly polices the treatment of animals at slaughterhouses and private laboratories. But it does not closely monitor the center’s use of animals, or even enforce its own rules requiring careful scrutiny of experiments.

As a result, the center – built on the site of a World War II-era ammunition depot a two-hour drive southwest of Omaha, and locked behind a security fence – has become a destination for the kind of high-risk, potentially controversial research that other institutions will not do or are no longer allowed to do.
