Our guest is Carol Walker, Dir. of Field Documentation for Wild Horse Freedom Federation.

Carol will be detailing Bureau of Land Management (BLM) heinous plans to STERILIZE wild  horses, including “studies” (experimentation trials) using several methods on 225 wild mares: ovariectomy via colpotomy, tubal ligation, and hysteroscopically-guided laser ablation of the oviduct papilla.  The BLM is going to do this experimentation at BLM’s Wild Horse Corral Facility in Hines, Oregon, but will eventually do sterilizations out in the FIELD.

The BLM has not, as of this time, posted the Environmental Assessment (for public comment) for this sterilization plan on the Oregon BLM websites.  The only people who have received it are people who are on the “interested party list” in Oregon.  The deadline for public comment is 2/2/16.   A link to the Environmental Assessment is HERE.

  1. How dare these inhuman people abuse these beautiful wild horses. All these people that are involved with this horrific crime should be in jail.

  6. Many of the mares will die. No ethical vet would do this. It’s rarely done to domestic mares in equine clinics with the best care and sterile procedures.

  7. Maybe the BLM could create some horse Refuge……
    And I don’t believe animal experiments, are in line in today’s World…I hope they’re not going to call all this resurch….That’s not working either

    • Roxanne, the refuges were created by the U.S. Congress in 1971, they were called Herd Areas or Horse Areas, and the BLM was mandated to manage them there. Creating off-range refuges (despite the original area being reduced by about half) at additional taxpayer expense is not a good approach. Sadly, it really IS research, since it will provide data on how effective or ineffective the various proposed techniques are, and also information on fatality and complication rates connected with their various schemes.

I am just hoping to get some much needed input here from all of you who are totally disgusted & beyond frustrated with our government officials & the unaccountable, misguided agency, Namely the BLM, no doubt!! I checked out the Humane Society Legislative Fund a while ago.. RE: The 2016 Presidential Candidates who support Animal Rights.. Only Bernie Sanders had a 100% score for full support 4 animal welfare.. I am so frustrated with everything else here.. My priority is doing everything that I can 4 the innocent ones who have no voice.. The world is whacked now … I have my priorities & my belief system & I will probably vote 4 him bcuz of his voting record 4 the animals…… Just want 2 save the innocent ones from extinction (at the hands of those politicians who only care about $$$)

  10. I think anyone who has ever been near a wild horse or burro or any wild animal will understand this:

    I can see the terror in their eyes and I can hear them cry with pain and fright – almost the same as being slaughtered alive … except that some will live through this surgery and post-op infections but even those will never forget the terror as long as they live.

    And it is unnecessary surgery done because the BLM got funding to do it$$$

    Cruelty to animals, also called animal abuse or animal neglect, is the human infliction of suffering or harm upon any non-human animal, for purposes other than self-defense or survival.

Given the persistent claims the BLM makes about the unnaturally high reproduction and survival rates they attribute to wild horses, surely a high percentage of the mares subjected to this “research” will already be pregnant, and at varying stages of gestation. Any mares found to be pregnant on the initial exam should be immediately removed from the studies, since abortions and fatalities resulting from the procedures will inevitably skew the results and conclusions.

    Can anyone reading this imagine our government blessing similar experiments on any other large American wildlife species?

  12. I feel this is much too experimental & INHUMANE as well ! Putting them in a state where they are conscious of everything but can not move is torture ! Wonder how many will live through it ! Also testing on some already in foal , ridiculous , they want to damage it or use it as a post pregnancy diversion . They have no compassion ! Why these people are allowed to do anything concerning wildlife of any species is beyond me . Just wish I knew how to have them replaced ! Despicable .

    “Intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly taking an action that mistreats or kills any animal without just cause, such as torturing, tormenting, mutilation, maiming, poisoning, or abandonment. Included are instances of duty to provide care, e.g., shelter, food, water, care if sick or injured; transporting or confining an animal in a manner likely to cause injury or death; causing an animal to fight with another; inflicting excessive or repeated unnecessary pain or suffering, e.g., uses objects to beat or injure an animal. This definition does not include proper maintenance of animals for show or sport; use of animals for food, lawful hunting, fishing or trapping.”

    If the sterilization of wild mares doesn’t qualify as animal cruelty, then what does?!

    • Partial birth abortions of any-term pregnant mares without anaesthesia or sterile conditions? They won’t know the pregnancy status of any mares until they insert their scalpel.

    Below is a presentation seemingly by LEON PIELSTICK, DVM, the veterinarian who has been conducting experiments on the field spaying of mares, and it shows (possibly Leon Pielstick himself) spaying a mare at a wild horse sanctuary

  16. The biggest reason and problem here, is We the horse people are watching so they can’t just destroy them out right. But it is the Cattlemen and Beef industry that is behind all of this, Horses, Bison anything that grazes and isn’t beef they are trying to rid the wild of them.

  17. Such a horrible realization for all of us.. 2 recognize WITH WIDE OPEN EYES!! that the cattlemen & the beef industry r the priorities 4 our government.. So many lobbyists & freaks with more $$ than we have. Wouldn’t it be amazing if for us to protest MAJOR BIG TIME? (although I realize many of us have tried before to no avail).. Just totally feeling abandoned by our gov’t officials.. But the innocent ones who have no voice & suffer needlessly, are truly THE ABANDONED ONES!!
    Thanks always 2 everyone who stands up here!
    All of you are an inspiration & a motivating factor 4 me always to keep pushing FORWARD & NEVER GIVE UP!!!
