BLM plans emergency horse gather along U.S. Hwy 93
ELY – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District is scheduled on Monday to begin gathering and removing approximately 100 excess wild horses from public and private lands adjacent to U.S. Highway 93 and State Route 322 in and outside the Caliente Herd Areas Complex and Eagle Herd Management Area in eastern Nevada.
The helicopter gather is necessary to provide for public and animal safety, according to the agency
The District will remove up to 50 wild horses from between Pioche and Eagle Valley that have moved outside the Eagle HMA in search of forage. Appropriate Management Level for the Eagle HMA is 100-210 wild horses. The current population is 1,370 wild horses.
The District will remove up to 50 wild horses from Oak Spring Summit west of Caliente that have moved outside the Caliente Complex in search of forage. The Caliente Complex is managed for zero wild horses. The current population is 796 wild horses.
The gather is expected to take four to six days to complete. A veterinarian will be on site during gather operations, which will be conducted by a contractor.
The gathered animals will be transported to the Axtell Contract Off-Range Corrals in Axtell, Utah, where they will be offered for adoption to qualified individuals. Un-adopted horses will be placed in long-term pastures where they will be humanely cared for and treated, and retain their “wild” status and protection under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.
The BLM does not sell or send any horses to slaughter.

Notice they now put the claim in that “The BLM does not sell or send any horses to slaughter” – guess they’ve been doing that for a while! And then theres the claim (?) that these horses will retain their “wild status and protection” in these LTH feedlots.
Yet another roundup – certainly says the BLM has no limits nor no watchdogs!

We need to show up and document every single move they make, even if it is a small group of people that can attend. We pay the bills so we want detailed photos and/or videos of any part of these activities that we can get. We want to see our employees, the vehicles they are driving, the license plates, name badges, contractor information, equipment they are using, anything they do to these horses or burros, offices out of which these decisions are being made, managers making these decisions…exhale. Anything else? It all needs to be posted online so taxpayers can see what we are paying for. Thank you to anyone that can SHOW UP. We are putting these birds on watch. Perhaps we need to developed state or regional teams of our own to “deploy.”

I totally agree Luna. If the same government can collect phone numbers from law-abiding citizens and allow the IRS to target specific people due to their politics, you can damn bet we should have the right to give them an interrogation. It’s time for “We the People” to put on our Steve Jobs masks sorta speak and micromanage the federal agencies that are no longer working in our favor.

We need an undercover agency that would watch every move this disastrous agency makes. THese people are disgusting and should be thrown out – maybe Death Valley should be their new home with no shoes, food and water. This would reward them for their killings of our wild horses and all the other animals they have put to death. The cattlemen need to be kicked of four ranges as well. If they can’t afford land for their cattle, don’t have that many. ANother greedy bunch.

An analysis of the Wild Horses Act and the relevant case law will demonstrate that the prevailing method used to eliminate the “straying problem”-extensive governmental removal of horses from public and private lands-COUNTERMANDS the protective purposes of the Act and of related public lands statutes.
While the constitutional basis for § 1334′s regulation of conduct on private lands remains an open issue, several persuasive theories suggest that Congress was EMPOWERED TO EXTEND FEDERAL CONTROL BEYOND PUBLIC BOUNDRIES.
Section 1334 of the Wild Horses Act provides landowners an inexpensive and convenient method of removing straying horses from their private property.
The BLM is under a “MINISTERIAL DUTY” TO RETURN THE HORSES TO THE PUBLIC RANGE.

Does anybody have information on cattle grazing allotments in Caliente and Eagle complexes?
I would not be surprised if they increase the number of cows grazed.

Sens. Harry Reid and Dean Heller are looking to insert wording into an upcoming federal highway bill that would designate an Interstate 11 corridor through Northern Nevada.

Leaving Las Vegas per US-93, traveling north onto US-318 through Hiko and Lund, then onto US- 6 for a short trip back onto US-93 north through Ely, continuing to Wells, Nevada and terminating on I-84 in Twin Falls, Idaho: This route encompasses (535) miles of roadway that will need to address (41) obstacles along its entire length that will need attention; i.e. bridges, railroad and highway crossing, per under and overpasses, narrow Right of Ways through townships, culverts, etc. In addition, the Las Vegas I-215 Beltway along the northern region of Las Vegas will not be utilized and therefore, will not need reconstruction costs allocated.
Our Commission supports the Alternative Route QQ along the eastern region of Las Vegas but only if it terminates at I-15 North and continues north per Alternative AA as previously removed from consideration. Utilizing US-93 not only saves construction costs per lane per mile at $5M average times four lanes equaling $20M per interstate roadway mile, it provides the least amount of private and tribal land interference, requiring land acquition dollars.

This makes me sick! I think we should all e-mail President Obama and tell him we want this insanity stopped. We want our Wild Horses and Burros protected. No more helicopter roundups, placement in god-awful holding pens, and experimental sterilization. And no more slaughter. Also, it might be a good idea to get the kids involved, like they did with March of Dimes. Tell every kid you know. They can pester their parents to do something. Obama’s e-mail is president@whitehouse.gov. Let him wonder whats going on and maybe get off his sorry — and do something.
