THE TRUTH #9 – Why did the BLM’s Palomino Valley Wild horse & Burro facility (or, the BLM, for that matter) spend taxpayer money to have CALVES rendered at Reno Rendering?
Below is invoice #723617, dated 1/31/15, from Reno Rendering to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), that includes rendering costs for 6 calves. However, our records indicate that the contract for Reno Rendering is an agreement with BLM’s Palomino Valley Center, where only wild horses and burros are kept in holding. No cattle are kept in the BLM’s Palomino Valley Center. Where did these calves come from? Why would Palomino Valley, or the BLM for that matter, send calves for rendering?

As someone who’s spent many hours at the Palomino Valley facility for 30+ years, I’ve never seen any cattle there. I find that significant because it means someone must have trucked in the dead calves to be processed at our expense.

Perhaps these were confiscated from illegal grazing operations? This would be legal (see the Cliven Bundy cattle killing after sale barns refused to accept them alive).
It’s also very odd these calves (In February they would be almost yearlings in most cases) cost only $6.666 each to render, while a not much larger horse cost $100.
Didn’t the previous FOIA invoices show a horse cost $125, and foals were at or near that same rate? Why the discrpancy, and why isn’t the brand inspector involved with tracing the owner/s of these calves? In CO any estray animals have to be reported to the sheriff/brand inspector and they post notices for a period to find their owners. Nobody just hauls calves off to kill except their owners, or perhaps a vet if they are ill or carrying contagious diseases. In any event there should be more of a paper trail if this was done legally. Can’t believe the BLM would have paid this without knowing, either, so more FOIAs may be in order.

So….rendering/processing costs were just thrown into the WH&B Program expenditures?
