HBO Cancels LUCK after Third Horse Death

HBO has canceled David Milch and Michael Mann‘s horse-racing drama Luck after the third death of a horse this season. The show had been picked up for a second season and filming was underway, but on Tuesday a horse was injured when she “reared, flipped over backwards, and struck her head on the ground.” The on-set veterinarian determined that humane euthanasia was appropriate. Two horses were injured and euthanized during the first season, so apparently HBO was operating on the “Three Dead Horses and You’re Out” rule.

Who Will Save the Race Horses?

When it comes to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, the New York Times, reporter Joe Drape and the thorny problem of old race horses going off to be butchered in a slaughterhouse, there has been a lot of finger pointing of late. I’m not sure any of it has been constructive. Today, four days after Drape wrote a story in the New York Times that leveled serious charges against the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and the TRF responded with accusations that Drape is a lousy reporter who badly misrepresented the facts, the industry is no closer to solving a problem that has existed for as long as the sport has.

Unfortunately, your pseudo-sympathetic display falls woefully short of championing horses’ rights to live out their natural lives in peace; after being used up by the rich,”horsey” set, which overwhelming dumps their equine family members when they become too expensive, too old or can’t sire “winners.”

Mark Cramer likes lost causes, and in America’s slaughterhouse-bound, retired racehorses, he has certainly found one. These are the rejects, the horses who are either too slow or too infirm to win a meaningful amount of money on the racetrack or be sent to a cushy life on a breeding farm somewhere. Hardly anyone cares about them and the racing industry does little to protect them, which is why an appallingly high number of retired thoroughbreds are shipped each year to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada to be butchered for their meat.

His nickname is “Kudo”, his real name Richard Couto. His self made occupation, hero for the animals. Perhaps you have heard of him already. I had been following his progress for months and noticed he got quite a bit done in short periods of time. The CNN segments kept coming on his ARM (Animal Recovery Mission) website. I invited myself for a visit to see about the illegal horse slaughter business in Florida and how he was single-handedly combating it.
