American “Stinker” Wants to Turn Iconic Wild Horses into Dog Food

(In My Humble Opinion) by R.T. Fitch, Author and Director of HfH Advisory Council

Be it this Writer’s Mouth or Backside; What Comes Out All Smells the Same

High up on a mountain, far, far away sits a man with his chin resting on his clenched fist; deep in thought, exuding an almost godly aura of deep concentration when suddenly a lightning bolt lands beside him, he jumps to his feet, looks up to the heavens and screams;

“I’ve got it; I finally have got it dear God.  Let’s turn our native American Wild Horses into DOG FOOD!”

Jerry Shenk, you are no American Thinker, you are a USDA approved, blue blooded, died in the wool American STINKER!!.

Just when you think it can’t get any stupider another self-proclaimed prophet of intellectual prowess opens his mouth and loads of road apples come pouring out only to splat on the ground before him, unbelievable.  Being so sure of oneself while displaying the characteristics of a deranged clown has to be a heavy burden to bear.

On the website, American Thinker, (which purports to be devoted to the exploration issues of importance to Americans) one Jerry Shenk postulates and pontificates on the (Congressional Follies, 111th Edition).  Personally, I don’t give a gnat’s arse on what this author thinks or even who he is let alone the short comings of our Congressmen as we are all too aware of said insensitivity to important issues, but to land on the topic of wild horses and make light, defame and disparage these most significant icons is beyond reproach.  Excerpt below:

H.R. 1018 passed the House on July 17, 2009, by a vote of 239 to 185 (Roll Call 577).The bill, titled the “Restore Our American Mustangs” Act, is a welfare program for wild mustangs. That’s right, welfare for horses. Not only did the House squander time on this matter, but they’re willing to squander $700 million of our tax money to fund it.

Among other provisions, the ROAM Act mandates a horse census every two years, provides “enhanced contraception” and birth control for horses, and sets aside an additional 19 million acres of public and private land for wild mustangs.

The Heart of our American Heritage reduced to DOG FOOD?!?

Frankly, we were unaware that wild mustangs used birth control. The bill is not specific about what forms of birth control the House approved or why it favored those methods. Did members choose equine condoms, chemical methods, or intra-uterine devices? Will stallions or mares be responsible for birth control? Will members of Congress “administer” this new equine policy? Or will American taxpayers be on the hook for a new bureaucracy of horse pimps and procurers on the federal payroll?

An easier, less expensive solution to the wild mustang conundrum can be captured in the following two-word phrase: “Dog food.” But when has Congress ever transformed a perceived problem into a revenue stream?

Considering the hundreds of wild horses and burros that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and their hired contractors have killed this year there is very little humor in Shenks words.  Insensitive, elitist and ignorant is the only way to describe the smart-ass and flippant comments made as tens of thousands of wild horses, stripped from their lands and pulled from their families, languish in government holding facilities simply waiting to die.  It sickens me beyond words.

It’s just this sort of rank ignorance that has put our national treasures into the situation that they are in this day and it is this kind of junk journalism that perpetuates the misconceptions and inaccuracies pouring from the BLM on a daily basis.

It’s got to stop and we are the ones to do it.  Respond quickly, be swift of foot, counter the lies and enlighten the world, that’s our job and we do it well

Comment on the American “Stinker” by clicking (HERE) <bottom of article>

Write the Stinker Shenk at jshenk2010@gmail.com and tell him what you think; politely now, you can do better than me, I am just venting for all of us, and spread the word amongst your friends and family, be a shining white star for the horses, let them know the facts, the future and what we are up against.

And last but not least, remember and revel in the fact that you are not alone; we are together and growing in number every day.  There is hope, we shall succeed, it’s only that for the sake of the horses it needs to be today rather than tomorrow, but it will come.

Keep the faith and be heard, the horses are counting on us.

  1. i’m waiting for a moderator to approve me as a commentor, not 1 of the 16 comments already posted disagree with this “solution; while I understand the point of his article, that our govt. wastes a lot of money! he really needs to research THIS topic a bit more before he bandies about such a heartless solution.

  2. Horse meat should not be used for animal or human consumption. It still baffles me how Congress can squander away meanless procedures and hard earned money without a concsious or a logical thought. I’ve called the Congresswoman in my districts over the BLM deadly escapades and there is still a “duh” moment. Wasteful, egregious and evil doings going on here.

  3. Dog Food will be the Loophole in HR 503 also. In the 2007 version of HR503, the wording included the prohibition of the use of Slaughtered Horses for ANY REASON; however in the 2009 version of HR503 the wording has been changed to prohibit the use of Slaughtered Horrses for HUMAN CONSUMPTION. So, even if – miraculously HR503 is removed from the SubCommittee on Criime & Terrorism and voted into LAW before January 2, 2011 – 6 weeks from now, when it will DIE, there will still be that loophole for DOG FOOD. All they will need to do then is set up the Dog Food Factories in Mexico and Canada. I don’t know who’s bright idea it was to take out the words “FOR ANY REASON” and change them to “FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION” in this bill, but they knew what they were doing,

Is “American Thinker” a First Amendment believer or defender … obviously not!

  7. I was also approved and posted a thoughtful comment about the money being squandered on removal, building fences in the Custer Forest, and the “green” energy projects going to foreign companies hurriedly to tap stimulus dollars. I don’t care if it gets posted or not. The “moderator” will read it and be really steamed!

On the lighter side, did you know that President Obama recently visited the native Americans in upstate New York? He promised to increase the prosperity of his “red brothers and sisters,” and spoke with eloquence about how he had always voted for any bill that would benefit them when he was a Senator. Although he was vague about how he would increase their prosperity, he was articulate and seemed impassioned. Before he left in his motorcade, he was given a plaque with his new Indian name, “Walking Eagle.”

Several members of the press asked the native American elders how they had selected President Obama’s new name. They said this is the name given to birds so full of &hit they can no longer fly.

While the other’s who know me; know there is a rage going on in that head that is scary. I am a Canadian; a person who’s forefathers spilled gallons of their blood fighting for their rights; parts of these gallons of blood were Native Americans. I get very rude in alot of peoples minds with my comments. You know REDNECK.. Have even been told that there is no violence talk on this page also. So after this writing; I’m going to delete this page from my system; not because of rage but no people need to be subjected to these kinda views; as I’m sure the Fitch’s will delete this REPLY and block me from this page. BUT I don’t care as Freedom of speech is dead in most everyone’s lives today; along with the backbones have been lost in most all North Americans today; and this includes Canadians. I talk about this holocaust on the Mustangs that will never end with just a paper war; Mr Nice only got stomped and when I say this ; just think of the Jewish people that just sat there and died because they said; There is no violence in our peoples beliefs. If the rest of the people of our world sat there and said; Send Hitler a letter stating that we demand him to stop or we will take him to court… Where would we be today??? I am not saying; Go get your guns and clubs; cause after all; this just a cause about our Mustangs being slaughtered; not people.. EH ?? Yes you are right this is just for animals; not a thing about humans; so sit in shock as I am saying this here. Maybe; call and get someone to arrest that guy; he’s spreading hate and asking people to take a stand against our goverment. Asking people to take a stand for these Mustangs.. I am not asking for guns or clubs; I’m asking for bodies with back bones to start blocking roadways; getting into the faces of these BLM people with “people” road blocks.. If fear is holding you back from taking a stand like this; then for sure; the Mustangs and everyone involved are lost. Keep this in mind; these Mustangs have been the one’s seeing the brunt of this annilation for 10 years now. The numbers of free Mustangs left; puts them on the endangered species list now; but because they are only a re-introduced wild animal;they don’t get this protection. The goverment people will not run anyone over; arrests will be done for sure; maybe even pyshically removed; but it is still against the law to outrite kill people for taking a stand..This paper war has been going on for over 10 years now and the only wins are a few laws that you can still drive trucks thru the loopholes; The losers are the Mustangs and the world watches as these beautiful Icons of a Nation are annilated.. Do you think it was the goverments call to end the war in Veit-Nam because they won or because your nation of people started to revolt with rallys and marches to the point; it had to be stopped before there was a fight within your own country?? This an answer only in your own opinion of why it stopped… Hundreds of thousands said stop the killing by going to the streets. There will never be hundreds of thousands for the mustangs; but a few hundred blocking a road entrance and getting National media coverage thru these road blocks will get the nations attention. This is the attention that your goverment will listen to; because now the whole world is watching your people take a stand for this Icon that is being lost…A stand for a Icon that is known as part of American’s freedom.. almost as well known as your flag..So I have had a redneck’s say here; or maybe even be viewed as a homeland terrorist; calling for the nation to stand up..mite not even get to anyone besides the watcher of the replys; but I have said my piece.. And it is probably all wrong but is how I have got to the point of saying my views are probably the only way left for these Mustangs..And now bowing out.. This is a real funny in my “Violent” mind; a home land terrorist for the Mustangs and I’m Canadian …So with these last lines; I bid you Mustang warriors ADIEU.. Keep up the good fight.. And my condolence’s to the Mustang families being destroyed waiting for that elusive court order to have it all stopped… EH??

    • I totally agree with you, Jim, and have been saying the same thing for some time. There are three criteria that we need now to finally win this war: 1. A true leader. Someone who owns both a suit and cowboy boots; someone who has the finese and grace to handle Congressmen and the earthiness to relate to people who just simply love horses; someone who has the leadership skills to step forward and say, “I will lead you to victory!”, and follows through. 2. Unity. There are tens of thousands of people who have spoken out about this evil that is being done against our wild horsees, most are scattered far and wide. One petition will millions of signatures. One rally with tens of thousands of attendees. One summit of our own- with leaders from thoughout the industry being pulled together for one purpose. 3. Courage. The courage to go stand in front of a truck, a helicopter, go through a fence, a barracade, pass by a BLM bully, the willingness to be arrested for the cause. Truckloads of people willing to be arrested for the cause! Until we ‘fight fire with fire”, the paper and blog wars will continue, and the horses will slowly (although not so slowly) disappear.

This isn’t condoning violence, and neither does your letter. Bravery is not violence.

      • The horse industry needs much wooing before any major players will come forward. The Ag roots of many have them on the fence or against the wild horses. Smaller
businesses in the industry may see a good place to seen. And the enemies of the wild ones still need to be hit up for big bucks for under writing their demise and their lost range. Not just to support a rally either, but to help our displaced and removed horses stay viable as we work for protections and lands they can be safe on.

If you want to be the organizer, Elaine, do it. If you can pull this off then you can proudly stand beside some of our leaders. If it is anywhere but DC you will be wasting the trip and the people. Have it where it counts most. mar

Because caring advocates are already referred to as ‘bleeding hearts’, ‘tree huggers’, etc. the up-front person must belie that image in presense, power, and personality. I’ll be right behind him/her, and can likely bring celebrity attention with me, but our General is not me.

But if there are people like this to approach, go for it. We have some grand folks who we have learned from and who are still guiding us. I am not sure those qualities are needed because we are just little people, most of us. I feel no disconnect from Laura, RT or even Ginger because they are the best of individuals. Explore this and do some scoping. We need the effort and the rally and the recognition. Maybe there is someone??? Seek and you shall find, Elaine. Good luck. mar

    • Jim, When I first brought up civil disobedience here last fall I was run over by people who thought it meant violence and they objected loudly even though it has nothing to do with violence. The use of civil disobedience has invited violence, tho’. We have been warned and people are fragile and the cost of bail may or may not be high but it will cost and what ever defense and court appearance people must make will also cost. I can see so many scenarios with civil disobedience working but you know what? You cannot get the people to the roundups. Not enough of them.

A big rally in DC with music and legislators and films and talks would be grand. For Spring. So if this is the agenda, go for it. If you want a single leader you will have to look to those who are there already because they are not going anywhere but out to save the wild horses and burros. They have stayed the course. They continue to work all the while. RT (and Terry) Fitch, Laura Leigh, Ginger Kathrens and Makendra Silverman, Craig Downer, Elyse Gardner and James Kleinert. There are another handfull. But all of Them can bring all of Us together. With Wendy Malick and and a few other dedicated celebrities and whom ever is able to come entertain.
If we can stop it before then we will and if we cannot there will be people in the field doing the dirty work while you rally. Just the way it is. We will lose another 5,000 horses before we can do this properly. But it may be needed. The Last Stand of the American Wild Horse. mar

Did you not know that the BLM who is responsible for their care and welfare has been systemically experiementing on our wild horses using PZP? Did you not know that this drug was given to two of Cloud’s mares way back when they were 1 and 2 years of age–in back to back years rendering them STERILE?

  12. I notice a trend with the BLM to keep the HUGE costs of rounding up the horses hidden from the public. Just the helicoptors alone cost millions per year. The horses could ‘eat’ free on the public lands as they have done forever.Plus they would improve the lands, save on manual grass seeding programs and wildfire costs.

The trend is to push the long term holding costs to the fore front. And now they are overloading the long term holding system numbers and ‘showing off’ that system to the public. Also are doing nothing to make the adoption program work better. I wonder if this was slaughterhouse sues ‘plan’ she presented to blm at that meeting where she stood up and spoke. Make longterm holding a target of disaproval of gov ‘spending’
We need the general public to be informed about the costs of running helicoptors and the round-ups,

The BLM is supposed to be managing the horses, give them some public land for LTH!! And those helicoptors can EASY drop hay and even water if needed.

*Think* on those millions of dollars of savings on gov contracts that cost 2,000 plus dollars to round-up one horse! Just use their own lands or close lands for long term holding!

And most important *think* about the humane, right thing to do and the moral ‘savings’- that is priceless to most Americans

  14. Mr Shrink— You seem to be singularly ill-informed about ‘welfare as we know it’ The real welfare is the one we TAXPAYERS SUBSIDIZE TO ALLOW PRIVATE LIVESTOCK OWNERS TO GRAZE THEIR ANIMALS ON WESTERN PUBLIC LANDS AT THE PALTRY FEE OF $1.35 A MONTH PER COW/CALF PAIR. On private land, these same owners would pay a fee 10 TIMES HIGHER, BUT THEY SUCK OFF THE PUBLIC TEAT BECAUSE THE FEE HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED SINCE INSTITUTED IN 1935 under the TAYLOR GRAZING ACT. Private livestock (cows and sheep) outnumber wild horses by 150 to one and are the largest contributor to the degradation of public lands in the arid West. Lest you believe the hoary tale of poor little family ranchers getting reamed by changes to this ridiculous hand-out, know that such venerable and pitable corporations as the Hilton Family Foundation and the Anheuser Busch group would “suffer” if forced to give up this land grab. No, Mr Shrink, you have done a very poor job of finding out where the money goes or how votes in Congress play out. When you do nothing more than look at any issue from the Congressional Register and figure you know what is wrong, you are doing research which would draw a ‘F’ grade in 7th grade English .
Leaving out the issue of humor around horse birth control, these animals would cost NOTHING IF SIMPLY LEFT ALONE TO BE WILD, AND SUBJECT TO PREDATION, WEATHER, AND NATURAL SELECTION. It is the livestock and extractive energy lobby getting mucked up in so-called “management” of wild animals that is the real problem. JUST LOOK AT THE NUMBERS OF LIVESTOCK AND FOLLOW THE MONEY.
If you dare, I have included for your edification, an extract from Western Watersheds Project about the destroyers of public land so-called “managed” for multiple use by our illustrious BLM. Susan Rudnicki CA

Western Watersheds Project Wins Victory in Nevada Against Faux Rancher Barrick Gold

    Friends,

Western Watersheds Project has just won an administrative appeal in Nevada, halting a BLM decision that would have renewed a grazing permit for Paris Livestock, a welfare rancher who subleases a BLM grazing permit held by Barrick Gold, the largest gold mining mega-corporation in the world. “Custom and Culture” indeed !

Often criticism of environmentally destructive public lands ranching is downplayed in the media and by industry groups who characterize public land ranchers as the “salt o’ the Earth”.

This Cowboy Mythology is pervasive across the country where the general public is led to believe that a majority of public lands are grazed by ‘mom and pop’, ‘cowboy’ operations whose business enterprise and “custom & culture” would be extinguished if not for their commercial use of our public lands.

The facts are otherwise; the top 10 percent of public lands grazing permit holders control a breathtaking 65 percent of all livestock on BLM lands and 49 percent of Forest Service lands. The bottom 50 percent of public lands grazing permit holders control a miniscule 7 percent on BLM lands and 3 percent on Forest Service land.

Much of your public land is grazed by the likes of Mary Hewlett Jaffe (heir to the Hewlett-Packard mega-fortune), who is the largest public land rancher in Central Idaho. The largest welfare rancher in the country is Simplot Inc., a multibillion dollar corporation headquartered in Idaho. Even huge international corporations like Barrick Gold, the largest pure gold mining company in the world, graze vast expanses of public land in Nevada, not because it is an economically viable enterprise, but because it is a politically prudent way for these international coorporations to ‘buy-in’ to the Cowboy Mythology and gain the political support of local county commissions who might otherwise resist these international companies’ acquisition of water and control of land for their environmentally destructive mining operations.

WWP enjoys sending this little tap on-the-shoulder to Barrick Gold !

  16. I don’t think that there is anything wrong with turning horses into dog food. Horses are a livestock animal. There is nothing you can do currently to change that, and if you do, it will be the end of the horse industry. The status of livestock animal brings so many benefits to horses and horse owners. Livestock are not companion animals no matter how much you think they’re pretty or majestic. I’m not cold-hearted, but I would much rather see a horse humanely slaughtered than left out on some vacant lot to die of starvation, something that has been occurring with increasing frequency since the cut of USDA inspection funding to horse slaughter facilities. As an owner of a BLM mustang, as well as several other horses, and a veterinarian-in-progress, I feel that my views are not misconstrued or ignorant, simply reasonable.

    • Dear Lauren, Horses MIGHT BE JUST LIVESTOCK TO YOU BUT TO MOST THEY ARE WORKING COMPANIONS OR FAMILY MEMBERS JUST LIKE THE DOG OR CATS THAT ALSO WORK FOR US! I WANT YOU TO GIVE YOUR PETS UP FOR DOG FOOD WHEN YOU CAN NO LONGER TAKE CARE OF IT OR IT’S OLD & DYING!
Horses work for us willingly, horses go where your DAM 4 wheeler won’t, Horses make MANY OF US WHOLE! Slaugher Houses whouy! There’s planty of places to hand any animal over to including horses when one can no longer take care of them if people’d get off their stupid butts & look for them!
You think Slaughter houses are humane? My own husband WILL TELL YOU THEY AREN’T!!!! HE WORKED IN ONE FOR A SHOT TIME,
Becoming a Vet huh, well then you better learn that it’s more HUMANE to put an animal of any kind down by the dreded needle then it is to send them to slaughter!!!!!!

    • Ms. Caylor
I sincerely hope that your veterinarian training will include a trip to a Canadian(if they are not closed by then) slaughterhouse to see a horse slaughtered, or just watch one on You Tube. Slaughter is NOT euthanasia. Horses are companion animals–not cattle. The problem lives wholly with large breeders that need to “dump” the individuals that didn’t “make the grade”.
As a dog owner (and a BLM horse owner) there is NO way I would feed my dogs that I love and care for meat that has chemical residue such as Bute, wormer, etc in it. As for eating beef I buy from a family member that raises the steer without these chemicals. Our government says the meat is tested at “random”–so unless you know from the get -go how the animal was raised there are NO guarantees as to the safety of the meat. Reducing meat consumption and eating other proteins is now considered a better health practice. Looks like you have a lot to learn in vet school!

    • This message is also for Lauren. I can’t believe you of all people, going to school to be a veterinarian, would even think slaughtering horses is “humane”, or, ok for “dogfood”!! I feel very sorry for your horses, I mean, once you no longer have any use for them, what then? Funny you refer to horses, very coldly in fact, as only “livestock”. How can you possibly compare a horse to a cow or pig, or other poor animal destined to be on your plate? When was the last time you saw a “cow show”, you know, a person riding in a saddle, one with the animal(highly trained no less!), showing in numerous disciplines like western pleasure, eventing, show-jumping, dressage, barrel-racing, poles, endurance, cross-country, trail riding, halter class, the list goes on….?? I worked for a veterinarian for well over 10 years, & I thought they also took the same oath to not cause harm, that human doctors do.It sounds like you really do need to do some serious soul-searching, & have a lot to learn! I can’t help but wonder where you’re going to school, because I don’t want our daughter going there if that is what they’re “teaching” you! I agree with the other replies, maybe you need to choose a different career, unless you learn empathy & compassion.
