For Secretary of Interior, the choice is clear. President Obama should appoint Rep. Raul Grijalva. He’s a bold leader and a champion of our public lands who will protect our natural treasures, including American wild horses and burros, for generations to come.
Dear President Obama,
Your choice for the next Secretary of the Interior will determine the future of our public lands and their natural resources, including wild horses and burros. The individual you appoint must reflect the ideals that you campaigned upon and that so many of us supported.
The person best qualified to represent these ideals and move the Interior Department forward is Rep. Raul Grijalva, Congressman from Arizona’s Third Congressional District.
Rep. Grijalva has spent his entire career standing up to special interests and for American taxpayers and the preservation of our natural resources. As the top Democrat on the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands since 2007, he has been an outspoken advocate for conservation. He has also been a leader in the fight to reform the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM’s) costly and inhumane wild horse and burro program.
As Interior Secretary, Rep. Grijalva will hold the BLM accountable, and he will stop the government giveaway of public resources to commercial interests that exploit our public lands.
Please nominate Rep. Raul Grijalva as the 51st Secretary of the Interior. He is clearly the best choice to protect and preserve our public lands and our natural heritage, including America’s treasured wild horses and burros.
Sincerely,
Your Name

From American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign email:
“We know that Rep. Grijalva’s nomination to Interior would be a big win for America’s wild horses and burros, and our public lands, and a huge defeat for special interests. On Friday, NBC News reported that Grijalva was the “early favorite” among potential nominees for the position

He’s more qualified than anyone ahead of him, more qualified than the CO rancher who is clearly connected to scandal of missing horses connected to a hauler and known kill buy by first name basis.

Our public lands cover a huge amount of North America. The grazing lands have been desertified in areas due to over-grazing, and they have long been deforested. Without the horses on public lands to eat the dry undergrowth, we have had a series of devestating wild fires. Rather than adding tons of chemicals to our public lands, it would be so much healthier to return our horses, perhaps strategically to the areas where the land needs nourishment. On Shackleford Banks, North Carolina, the ecologists note that a small, rare maritime forest is continuing to grow with the horses as the only grazing animal. The Chinese have are also experimenting with enriching their grass lands by adding previously captured wild horses Studies by scientists who have done work for Interior before such as Dr. Daniel Rubenstein has been studying the effects of diferent grazing animals in Africa (I think it is in the Savannah–but may have my studies mixed up). While some anti-ecologists fuss that horses trample grass—-well, duh,—I walk through pasture land all the time, and after a week of rain the beautiful green grass has been cut in places by hooves, but this repair itself, so that in a few weeks the pasture will start to show the grass of summer.
If there are grasses that are important for diversity, wire them off. Do what people who own private property that they share with deer. There are ways to protect areas in a range from grazing. If the grass is poisonous, and some are, they won’t eat it anyway.
The healthiest way the U. S. could tackle the issues of widespread drought in the midwest and west would be to put our wild horses back on the land in areas where we want regrazed. I realize that these horses should be free-roaming. But any management plan for them should include a sa period of time when the horses move from one area of the herd management area to another. This way the first grazing pasture has time to rest. You don’t need elaborate fencing, there is a lot known about grazing management. However, REST for GRAZING AREAS is critical for recovery.
You know the BLM could help itself a lot by providing interships to state universities or working with agricultural schools with strong equine programs. Students could spend time on the range observing wild horse behavior. They will understand domestic horses so much better after some time watching how horses interact in horse society absent man’s active intervention. If the BLM wants to move to “on the range” management, they should understand what a great resource they have to offer and understand, as well, what a great resource our universities and colleges offer. Perhaps even local high schools would want to take field trips in their higher level biology classes.
Our wild horses are an enormous resource for so many reasons. We need to get and keep young people involved in our lands, animals, and natural world. It is so much easier to pull up “My Pony” on the Internet and do a designger horse. We have to get young people away from their computers and re-connect them to nature/

Another good choice but I think he is wanting to be an advisor at WWP now. He will be hard to replace there! We do have few choices. Let the best for the wild ones be found and appointed. If not, we are going to be in for the next round. At least we have some teeth now.
Thanks, RT, for putting this up. Please folks, try to get more people to sign this. This man has integrity. What a hard thing to find in politics.

I think the best man for the job should be appointed who is passionate about our lands and wildlife.. even caring about our wild mustangs on BLM land….and against slaughtering wolves too !! We need a supporter of placing animals going extinct on the Endangered Species Act …. I pray for someone who loves animals and who will not allow cruel and inhumane treatment of our beloved creatures……

Join me and lets be on Rep. Raul G’s A team. Let’s go. We have a lot of work to do in getting our horses back out on the range and keeping them 10o percent protected from the depth of man’s hellish slaughter. Stop slaughter now, stop the BLM round ups now. Let put our horses back out on the free ranges with adequate water and food sources. Let us work together and put our horse families back to some sort of Equine family groups they used to have if it is at all possible. The BLM has created such a mess. We can do this together. We can. Elect this incredible man to his new post. We need him on our side and the horses are crying out for help.Rep Raul G. can help us and our wild horses now. Keep the 1971 Law intact protecting our wild horses and burros. Yes, yes, yes, we must pass all of these important bills forever.
