Horse Drug May Have Entered Human Food Chain in France, UK Gov’t Says

Update from Fox News

Warned by Equine Advocates for Years may now be FACT!

LasagneighLONDON –  Three horse carcasses that tested positive for the equine drug bute may have entered the human food chain in France, the British government said Thursday.

Environment Minister David Heath told the House of Commons that eight horses from British abattoirs had tested positive for bute, and “three may have entered the food chain in France. The remaining five have not gone into the food chain.”

Heath said frozen lasagna sold under the Findus label in Britain had tested negative for bute. The product was removed from store shelves last week after tests found some of the meals contained more than 60 percent horsemeat.

Horsemeat itself is not dangerous to eat. But bute, or phenylbutazone, a painkiller and anti-inflammatory used on horses, is considered harmful to human health if ingested.

Authorities across Europe are testing for the drug after horsemeat was found in food products labeled as beef.

    • And don’t forget this Ag gag bill that some states are trying to get passed. If they didn’t have something to hide, they wouldn’t be pushing this bill, would they! I’m afraid that horse meat is going to get into our good chain. I have no faith in the USDA to actually do their jobs. Look at the violations they’ve logged and have done nothing to correct involving slaughter animals, including horses. Don’t let big Ag pull the wool over your eyes..

  1. The EU obviously hasn’t been testing (nor required US testing) any of the imported horse meat from the hundreds of thousands of slaughtered US horses over the past several decades. And they’re worried about these 3 horses?

    • There seems to be far more that if being uncovered all over Europe. But they still are trying to cover up the Bute issue saying that the meat is safe to eat.it’s horrible!

  2. How many more deaths will it take before they stop killing our horses? So what if only 3 out of 5 tested for bute? What about the thousands, the millions of other horses that have been killed and eaten within the last 10 years that have bute and other drugs in their systems? And do their lives not matter too??? They need to get with the program. Those people who have come down with cancer in France, oh, say in the last 10 years, look at their diet. Why is other just these three horses that are important and not the others? I think they are covering their butts and I smell a conspiracy.

  4. STOP importing America’s equine for your dinner plates…we don’t raise horses, ponies, donkeys, mules and mini horses for your food. If the argument is that they are excess eat your own dogs, cats and rats….we hear you have plenty to fill your bellies and plates. Nasty thought, huh? Now you know how we feel. I can assure you that we will continue to use Bute, poison wormer every 6 weeks and a host of other pharmaceuticals as needed for our animals…..maybe you will get the idea sooner or later. Ask yourself how many people in your circle of friends have cancer or other serious maladies? Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to draw a conclusion here.

  5. It would be very interesting to see how many in Britain, France, have aplastic anemia, i.e., a most serious condition from eating Bute! I know the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the U.S. does do such statistics. I am turned off eating meat. I hardly eat beef, but I found the ground beef patties in frozen dinners I eat tasted too sweet. And this was *before the horse meat scandal came out. I have thrown these dinners away. I cannot eat as my stomach turns.

  6. All the while they are saying that the meat is safe and that people should not worry, blah blah blah. Good PR work, huh? Don’t worry, it won’t kill you (yet). And now e have these idiot senators right here who are trying to turn Oklahoma into the slaughter capital in the good ole USA. Look out people, out meaty is about to be compromised.
