WASHINGTON — Gov. Brian Sandoval’s threat to pursue legal options to boost federal funding for managing wild horse populations drew mixed reaction from Nevada’s congressional delegation Wednesday.
Reps. Mark Amodei and Joe Heck expressed support Tuesday for the strategy laid out so far by their fellow Republican.
“If you have a guy like Brian Sandoval (angry) at you, you have really hit rock bottom,” Amodei said, noting the governor’s reputation for being an “even-keeled, thoughtful” state leader.
He said Sandoval’s strategy was a “big, big message” to the Bureau of Land Management in Washington, making it clear he was not including the agency’s representatives in Nevada in the same negative view.
Amodei credited the Nevada BLM officials for trying to deal with livestock producers honestly and blamed the Washington office for not heeding their requests.
Heck favors ensuring sustainable herd levels and maintaining access to grazing lands for local ranchers and farmers while requiring the federal government to meet its obligation to fund the efforts, an aide said.
Republican Rep. Cresent Hardy said the federal government, as the largest landlord in Nevada, has a responsibility to provide stewardship of the public lands it controls.
“Unfortunately, the BLM has not lived up to its end of the bargain by failing to manage Nevada’s wild horse populations,” Hardy said. “Instead of stepping up to the plate and addressing the problem, the federal government is planning to rob hard-working Nevadans of their livelihoods as our sensitive habitats continue to get destroyed.”
Republican Sen. Dean Heller said it is BLM’s job to determine whether the range conditions can support wild horse populations.
“It’s not fair for local ranchers to be penalized because BLM isn’t carrying out the law,” Heller said. “While more resources are necessary, the problem is larger than that. The agency has no comprehensive strategy for wild horse management.”
A spokeswoman for Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said Democrats support additional funds for the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program and are not standing in the way of providing adequate funding.
“That’s Republicans,” she said.
Democratic Rep. Dina Titus did not comment.
The Nevada Cattlemen’s Association, Nevada Farm Bureau Federation and Nevada Association of Counties welcomed Sandoval’s announcement.
“Wild horse populations in Nevada have skyrocketed to levels unsustainable for the ecology of Nevada’s rangelands and are also impacting sage grouse habitat, horse health and the livelihood of Nevada’s ranching operations, many of which have been in operation for generations,” the groups stated in a statement.
“In response to this situation, the BLM has indicated that there will potentially be further grazing reductions in Elko County.”
Jeff Fontaine, executive director of the Nevada Association of Counties, said horse overpopulation affects not only livestock producers and wildlife habitats, but also local communities and county services.
“Damage from wild horses just in southeast Elko County alone could result in an economic loss of $1.8 million,” Fontaine said.

Straight from the Horse's Heart 
There is an uncertain fate against the wild horses and burros…they need to look at the cattle more then the wild horses and burros ! The cattle are the ones destroying the land and watering holes that belong to the Sage Grouse , Wild Horses and burros ! The wild horses and burros have lived with the Sage Grouse for many years and nothing was wrong with them. The cattle have moved onto the land that belongs to the wild horses , burros and the Sage Grouse. The land is now being destroyed ! Remove the cattle and return the wild horses and burros back to where they were removed from…if this is done…the land would return back to the way it was ! That is…after many years of recovery !

The cattle ranchers should have no voice in the outcome of wild horses and burros whatsoever. Cattle ranchers want to use public lands for free or low cost grazing and to hell with the wild horses and burros who have first right for that property.

Bull crap the cattle n sheep ranchers far out way the horses population on public land which by allowing them grazing rites destroy the renewal of the grasses ..horses renew these lands with their droppings cattle n sheep do not reseed with their manure. Keep horses wild n on their land for the betterment to all keep the cattle n sheep off or at least less populated

In other words he’s paid off like so many others backed I’m sure by that old crook Harry Reid that pockets huge donations from the ranchers along with all the entertainment outfits in the state. The ranchers are demanding that the horses be removed and replaced with their destructive cattle. Who are they going to blame when the horses are gone and the grasslands have turned to dust, Ghost horses???

This is such a bunch of crap! It’s NOT the horses that destroy the land! That has been proven over and over again! Sandoval is obviously either just another lying politician or has no idea what he is talking about. I’m not defending the BLM either. Talk about corruption and incompetence! All at the expense of the wild horses and burros! And populations are NOT exploding! There are few horses left in the wild, and that is a fact! Don’t believe what these liars are trying to sell you about starving horses and decimated landscape because of the horses! It’s cattle that tear out the plants by the root whereas horses nip plants. So tired of these jerks lying!!

Yes completely bull. and now there are sheep being released so they can be “firefighters” and eat up all the cheat grass. The horses are the “firefighters, the planters” and they do not destroy the water. the horses, tortoise, sage grouse, burro, have lived together in harmony untill human and human things like cattle and sheep came. Sandoval is a liar he signs agreements with local wild horse groups to try to establish programs and then walks away and forgets.

Populations of wildhorses ‘skyrocketing’? I wish we’d quit the hyperbole and get some honesty for a change – mares only have one foal mostly, and with no other animal with possibly the exception of wolves is the population so scrutinized! The population of wild horses is only in the tens of thousands – cattle is in the tens of millions and humans are in the billions. About the only ring of truth in all of this rhetoric is that ranchers (and politicians) would lose money! Interference with human economics is the major driving force for wildlife destruction, and it has to stop.
Again (and again and again) there is a law protecting wild horses for the American people as part of our history; they are wanted.
